City Connection by Jaleco

----------------------------------------------------

ROMset: citycon.zip

----------------------------------------------------

lives 5
difficulty easy
cab upright
all others switched off

----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only!

- No continues or adding credits!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Monday Feb 13th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2012.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.

- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

Best of luck!

Just put up mid 200k twice in a row.  Games average around 10 minutes and KM is in the 3k range.  Things I've figured out

1) I hate that damn cat more than the snickering dog in duck hunt.
2) I really need to compile a High Score MAME because I just lost my scores.
3) Balloon bonus isn't worth the trouble, 1000x per oil pales in comparison to the 3.5k avg I'm getting out of vehicle kills.
4) It's pretty much impossible to see the track on parts of the Australia and Japan stage.
5) That cat is the devil.

Edit:  Just put up 325k and 4898km on second game of the night.  Comp hi score is at 431K and I think I'll have that licked in a few days.  Made a lot of stupid errors on my last board and blew three guys in a matter or seconds.  I can't play more than two games a night because the music kinda stays with me otherwise.

Looks good. And as to your scores, yes and no...the way we've been doing it (almost since the beginning), when you pick the game, you can't pick the next one if you win the one you picked. 2nd place gets to pick instead. That way someone can't just keep picking all the games they're good at and not give anyone else a chance.
Also, good choice...it's an interesting game. I've played it a little, but not enough to figure out all the tricks. I'm not even sure what kind of score I can get. I'll definitely be playing though :)

87,100.

Got to 3rd level.

I can't think of any games with controls as worse as this game. Oh my!

So, I figured I was a criminal, which is why I was avoiding & shooting cop cars. On level 2, ambulances are my enemy. Who tangles with ambulances!?!? Level 3: taxi drivers vex you--that I can understand!

My MAME (115) lists the number of lives as 3. What rev shows 5 guys per game?

Thanks,
-Jason

shoot everything! thats where the points are at...cant imagine getting a 400k score by just completing levels.

as for the 5 guys,,this might be my misunderstanding as when i chose the game i assumed you choose the setting as well..if im mistaken then we can correct it but i was just following suit as i saw on the previous game that dip switch setting were chosen and i am now just new to this thread as of the last game..

im on V143

I didn't notice the 5 car setting till yesterday.   I am now at 278k.   The balloon warp gets you 1000 points per oil can so the warp is especially useful if you have a bunch.

I suck so much at this game. The controls are horrible. I'm used to playing Car-Vup on the Amiga, which is superior compared to this one. Anyways, I'll try to see if I can get a decent score to put up here. :)

Part of what's so frustrating with this one is that the boards increase in difficulty as do the frequency of cats and spikes while the scoring doesn't increase accordingly.  There is no level completion bonus other than that tied to oil.  I'm going to experiment with just squating on the first level and see how high I can get that way.  Still topping out in the high 300k low 400k range.

I played my games with 3 lives.
You can put 5 lives by changing the dip switch settings.
I played a few games this week with 5 lives, I got over 500K.
Twingalaxies shows 3 lives.
-------------------------
"ROMSet: CityCon
Lives: 3
Unknown: Off [All]
Cabinet: Upright

Special Rules: You may freely use the Balloons to warp to a different level. An Extra Life is awarded at 100,000 Points and every 200,000 Points there after.

Special Note: due to a bug in the game's implementation, all scores above 900,000 MUST be monitored carefully for your correct score due to a bug which gives infinite lives. [If you pass the extra life threshhold after exceeding 900k, you may freely use that extra life from 900k and every 200k [1.1m, 1.3m, 1.5m, etc.] thereafter until you die and no longer would normally have any lives if this glitch did not occur.]
"
---------------------

It's right that the bonus points are not very interesting.
The best way to stack up points is to shoot at the other cars on the bottom level.  Just don't stay to long there or a wall will appear.

I don't have any problems with the controls.
You can make a low and a high jump.  For the high jump, for example to jump on the upper level, you put the joystick up.
When you're going down, you can change direction in mid air.  For example you can go from the 3rd floor to the 2nd or 1st.

ahhh. im so glad i was able to choose such a controversial game. both in gameplay and in rules  :P

my apologies for any confusion in the settings (because i didnt know)and will only choose default settings here on out if i am to win again..

that said, even with 5 guys i cant even break 300k

In reference to staying on level 1, I tried that as well, after a while cars start coming at you from the opposite direction.    Just before I warped off that level a green object was following me at the top of the screen (kind of like a balloon).    Not sure if it was good or bad.   Has anyone seen this?

Also, has anyone had more that 99 oil cans?

Getting closer, 368,700.   Has anyone else seen the bonus black rabbits?   They appeared out of nowhere on one of the later screens.

Haven't seen any rabbits but I did see that broccoli looking thing up near the top of the screen once but I let it get off frame and lost it.

Do yo have to run into the green car to get the extra?
or shot an oil can on it?

Raising the bar, 562,800   :)

My strategy was to get as many oil cans in the first round, I actually lost a car on the first level trying to get more oil.   I had about 70 cans when I warped to level 2 giving me a score of 150k.  I then was able to warp to level 3 giving me 300k.   It took 2 levels to warp the 3rd time.   I then just went crazy shooting cars.

Get some oil cans and shoot the police cars on the first floor.
Don't stay too long on the same floor because a wall will appear right in front of you.

Get some oil cans and shoot the police cars on the first floor.
Don't stay too long on the same floor because a wall will appear right in front of you.

Yeah, I do that...still am barely able to get 200K. Highest I've done so far is 218K. I haven't posted a pic of the score, but I suppose I could (it's on my other computer)

I'm not sure how it works ... since I have the highest score, I think, do I have to create a new entry for this week game?

Yep, we usually go for 2 weeks. If you have any problem creating a new thread, one of us who've done it before can create one for you.
