Why doesn't my rom work on linux?
« on: January 16, 2012, 02:11:20 pm »
Hi!
I'm trying to get BubbleBobble working on my Ubuntu installation. I just installed with "apt-get install mame", but I can't seem to get Bubble Bobble started?

On Windows, and mame from mamedev, it works... Well there are errors when starting it ("there are known errors...")
But on Linux, it just doesn't start? It says "ERROR, not found" and it lists a bunch of files.

What's wrong? Can't I run Bubble Bobble on Linux?!

And why does it even say that "there are known errors" on windows? It works perfectly...?

I think by default, Mame is looking in ~home/.mame/roms for roms.
.mame is a hidden directory.
Or you have to edit your mame.ini to change the rom path.
Do you use a front end? I use Wah!cade:  http://www.anti-particle.com/wahcade.shtml
If all is setup right, it works great.

I'm planning to use Wah!Cade  :D

I did setup a symlink to ./mame (home/emulators/mame), and created a roms folder under this one.
I haven't done anything else though.
Well, I created the config.ini file, but haven't started editing.

But is there something wrong with the Bubble Bobble rom? I do get an error on PC as well, but more a warning, and then you can still play.
After MAME, I am also going to install nestopia and zones.
I'm going to use Ubuntu 11.10 on a atom-computer. Hopefully it will be fast enough.

Did you try other roms?
On an intel Atom its better to use Lubuntu, wich is lower on resources.

Ah, I was thinking of Lubuntu. It's with KDE right?

I've been following this guide: http://gravitronic.blogspot.com/2011/11/mame-with-ubuntu-1110-in-jamma-arcade.html

He's talking about using fluxbox, should I do that even when using Lubuntu?

LOL, I didn't see the thread just below "Basic Lubuntu with Wah!Cade Tutorial".

Gonna read that.

Anyways; Could you please test with bubble bobble? (bublbobl.zip, bublbob1.zip, bublbob2.zip)

The Bubble bobble games work fine on my system, only one clone fails to work.
Lubuntu is with the LXDE desktop wich is much lighter then KDE or Gnome, here: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=lubuntu is the distrowatch page.
You can also install fluxbox on Lubuntu (i haven't tried it yet, i am satisfied with LXDE) wich is even lighter yet, but also a bit less user friendly.
You can also check out Sairuks Mah!cade, wich is a fork of Wah!cade, it's more actively developed.
Here is the home page: http://www.mameau.com/index.php?d=mahcade
On the Wah!ki page you will find documentation and a lot of artwork.

Have fun.

Thanks for the info!

Regarding BubbleBobble;
Sorry, clone? What's different?
I have these three rome, and all of them give an error in Windows mame (mamedev), just a warning that there are known errors.

A clone is usually a game made to work on other hardware, (like donkey kong on scramble hardware).
You are usually required to have the original (parent) as well.

Me too, I have problems running BubbleBobble (bublbobl) on slackware 13.37 64bit with mame 0144u6 (+ hiscore patch + groovymame patch).
As frontend I use advancemenu 2.5.0.

As soon as I can, I will attach the output of "groovymame64 bublbobl -v -md 4".

I don't know much about groovymame, but looking at the output it looks like a X server error, not mame.

The Xorg error should be interpreted as a warning: i suppose it's due to wrong xrandr options, but it's not fatal for X and groovymame (I said that because it also happen with other working roms).
