If I get another call from the "Network Monitoring Center" I may scream

BobA:

I keep getting calls from some english speaking but with a heavy accented people that say they are monitoring my computer and it has problems.  An obvious scam but I wish I knew where they get my telephone number from or maybe it is just random.   Anyone else getting these idiotic calls?

Here is how the scam goes.

You are contacted by phone or email by someone claiming to be Microsoft technical support of some kind. This person claims that your computer has sent them an error report of significant proportions and that they can fix for you.

They may go so far as to ask you to confirm your computer's malfunction by checking its event log, which, almost certainly will report the detection of errors. (Convincing, eh?)

Finally, they will offer to connect to your computer remotely and “fix” the problem for you.

If you allow this, you will be billed for them to do either nothing of any significance at all (the best case scenario) or for them to install malicious files or gather personal information/passwords.

Here's what you need to know:

1.    Microsoft has no way of knowing who you are or what is going on with your computer. Even if you have sent an error report to Microsoft, there is NO identifying information included in that report that they could use to track you down.

Anyone who tells you differently is lying.

2.     It is NORMAL for your computer's event log to report errors  - the majority of these are of no concern.

3.    Do not allow this person to remotely connect with your computer.

Well Fed Games:

Good reminder, my mom got called by those folks last week, she didn't fall for it, but I was still pretty livid.

Ive been contacted a few times by these people.  I ususally just tell them I dont have a computer.  Normally they just say thank you for your time and hangup, but I did have one guy argue with me about it not being possible to live without a computer...   :laugh2:

BobA:

SCREAM SCREAM
Jeeez  since I posted this I got called again.   I listened quite politely for 4 or 5 minutes and then when he asked me to allow them to connect to my computer I told him to FO.
