Storage Wars Texas: Proof that now even arcade OPERATORS are stupid.
TopJimmyCooks:
there's a 48 in one, (stick, 3 buttons and a 2 1/4 trackball) at a local bowling alley, but it was a new upright cab obviously mfg'd to house the board - has graphics from all the different games on the cab, etc. I've seen them online for sale somewhere for $2500 or so. So I don't know if there was some attempt at licensing. I didn't check for labels but there's one main Op in the area, everybody either uses that company or has their own machines.
If I had a cocktail with a a dead board, otherwise working (and it was legal) to try to fix and sell to a home user, I would look at a 48 in 1 to keep it a little more idiot proof as opposed to mameing it.

I apologize for speaking for others if not appropriate, but I assume most of us see the rant as nothing more than that. It's great for discussion, and maybe his "insane criticisms" are what makes it so lively and interesting. But when you start bringing Nazi comparisons into it... then well I think you're taking it more seriously than anyone else is and perhaps you need to take a deep breath.
Personally, I think rants are fun. They certainly add to, not destroy, my life's experience. ;)

You nailed it! Thanks!
I'm pretty sure that I mentioned in the very first post "nerd rage" and then again in another response referring to this post as a "pointless rant" and yet Xaiou2 seems to think that I have formed an entire opinion about the arcade community from an episode of some reality show. He somehow thinks that the point of my discussion was that "ops are stupid" when my point was "hey check out this crappy mis-representation of our hobby and the shoddiness of this show"
Let me help you with that. When you make a title for a thread, and you want a lot of people to check it out, you exaggerate a little on the title. If I would have simply posted "Check out this Episode of Storage Wars Texas" very few people would have chimed in. It's an old writers trick man. ;)
*edit*
ed is correct as well when it comes to my counter argument after X2s post.
See when it comes to these types of reality shows, I tune in to learn something. It angers me deeply when I see one of these shows giving out false information about ANYTHING. I hate to go back to my previous example, but when I'm watching pawn stars or american pickers and they explain the history of the object in question (see it's a good fit for their network) I can rest assured that their info is farily accurate and that I can actually learn something. I know this because some of the things they've apprasied over the years are things I'm very familiar with not only was their little lesson accurate, but in some cases they even taught me something new on a subject I thought I was well versed in.
The lack of integrity of the A&E shows bother me... mostly because they are so popular and admittedly compelling. They have a hit on their hands, why not go the extra mile and inject some quality into the program instead of just slapping it out there?

Its not that I believe HC is going to be the next insane dictator.. or mass killer. Its just I see way too many people like this in modern society... and it Does in fact scare me.

Nazi's...Killed Lots of Jews (and other People...)
Howard_Casto...Has killed 0 Jews...(as far as I know)
...Not a good comparison.
Le Chuck:
Further supporting evidence of Godwin's law. Currently being debated in our courts is whether comparing someone to a Nazi is protected speech. Two ways to look at it... The government is further limiting the first amendment or certain uneducated or insensitive citizens are unintentionally altering the social contract for the better.
Morale: if you're the type of person who thinks it's socially acceptable and valuable make hurtful and inflammatory comparisons you should make hay while the sun shines so to speak.

Ok, so on SWT the old guy found a cocktail cabinet in a locker. He referreed to it as a "pacman" machine. But it obviously wasn't. The machine was, practically new, all black and laminated it had three buttons and a modern, 8-way joystick. My first guess was a mame cab until I saw a mere 3 buttons and the light in my head went off "it's one of those crappy 48 in 1 machines." But you know I can excuse that guy because he's not expected to be an expert on arcade machines. Anyway, my point is anyone with minimal arcade expericne would be able to determine what it was within 30 seconds of seeing it. The real rage comes from when he takes it to an "expert" to be appraised.
He takes it to this guy that runs a "bar-cade" which is always a bad sign. The guy then tells him that it could indeed be a pacman "it's one of the earlier ones" and that "they made the cocktail version because operators wanted a machine that saved space". Ok first off, they didn't laminate the earlier machines, and it has modern controls and brand new ones at that... so it is obvious to any moron that it "isn't one of the earlier ones" and that even if it was a pacman at one point, it isn't now. Secondly, everybody knows that cocktail machines take up waaay more space than uprights. They turn it on and the guy who found it says... "shoot it isn't what I thought it was" when the (wait for it...) 48 in 1 boot screen is shown. The "expert" then says...... "no wait that's the boot up screen" After the 48-in-1 selection screen shows up they do a quick camera cut and show the game running Ms. pac man. The "expert" then tells him that it IS a pacman and that it's worth around 1200 dollars.
You know, I get that we are a bit more obsessive about this hobby than others and that maybe we might catch things that others don't, but you would think that and expert found for a tv show could be able to tell the difference between a 1980's classic and a mid 2000's bootleg rip-off!!!

I'm guessing from the context that this is some crappy reality TV show?
The way the guy said "It's one of the earlier ones" somehow reeminded me of when I ran into a school colleague, whom I never really liked. He had a Triumph belt buckle on. "Oh, you like Triumphs, eh?" I asked. "Yeah, they're the black ones, right?" He replied...
