Confi. won't save??

Hello, can anyone tell me why when I am in the configuration mode in MAME (TAB) I make the changes Fire, Left, Right etc. and when I go back in the next time they are all back to the default?? Please help this is a pain reprogramming it everytime I play a game.  It never used to do that??

Its could be a few things

1) have you made sure your default.cfg file isn't readonly (if you copyied from a CD, it sets it to readonly)

2) are you changing defaults or the game settings?  And have you tried to change the specific game setting?
