Pleiads (Pleiades)

----------------------------------------------------

ROMset: pleiadce.zip (Note: Not the parent set--I'm in the US, so I'm accustomed to seeing the Centuri version)

----------------------------------------------------

Default settings:
Lives: 3
Bonus  Life: 7k 70k
Unknown: off

----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only!

- No continues or adding credits!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Saturday December 31st (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2011.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.

- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

Best of luck!

Nice game Jason, you need to take care on the SOS bit.

Here's my starter 21, 660

The extra men should be 7K and 70K, not 3K and 70K...at least on the Centuri version used for this one. The Tehkan version allows as low as 3K and 30K though ;)
Anyway, here's my first entry (after a couple tries): 19,330

Oy, I think I had a score in the high 30k range, but I didn't take a screen grab at the time.

It seems that Pleiads doesn't keep high scores when exiting, at least in the MAME rev that I'm using.  Argh!

Be warned!

Thanks,
-Jason

PS--I found a way to point press for thousands of points--I didn't exploit this fully, as I got bored--it might be possible to rack up points indefinitely, until you pass out. In the "second" wave, with the large ships swooping down the screen at you, if you hit them on the side, they're damaged & can't swoop to the side, & you get 200 points for each damaging hit. Shoot all but 1 bad guy, then shoot his wing over & over. As he drops down, sidestep & continue shooting him up when he reappears at the top of the screen. These points can add up quickly!

I didn't realize you got points for hitting the wings. I know if no wings are damaged when you kill them, they're worth 100, if one, 200, and if both, 400. It's gonna be hard to do it for a long period though. I tried it and kept shooting them. Also, they sometimes shrink back to small size and can ram you alot easier.

Yeah:

4) One trick some players do is to go all the way to the left corner on the remaining Space Monster. It lines up in such a way that the bombs miss your fighter. Then you just keep hitting the fire button, which results in you constantly hitting the wing (20 points a hit). Some players rack up a couple of thousand points before the Space Monster is coming down too fast for them to hit.

Helps to read the history. I guess I've always John Wayne'd it.

I also didn't notice the set used. But my score wasn't high enough anyways.

Can we agree not to point press then as this would make the contest pointless?

This one's harder than the parent set. Still, I did pretty decent. No shield, and less waves kind of make it boring after a while. I may've had my fill for the next year.

I find the hardest bit is the sos section, the rest is not too bad, but I agree its a little bit limited, not enough variety really.

Pleaides has a warp button instead of shield, but I find myself rarely using it.

Guess I won this one (not many of us played it).

I'll pick a nice classic for the next one.

It wasn't for lack of trying ;) I played it a bunch of times, but couldn't manage more than 30K. Was watching Richie Knucklez streaming it the other night (on a real machine, not MAME), he makes it look so easy it's ridiculous...

It's a funny game, bit boring and weird controls.

I started the next challenge here

I love Pleiads, but the timing of the competition was horrible. Had all the kids Christmas presents stashed out in the gameroom and had family crap going on all week!  :P

I pressed the 'warp' button and nothing happened, far as I could tell. (Kind of a weird progression from Phoenix to Pleides, compared to Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe.) I'll have to give it another go.
