Difficulty In Finding A Game - Anyone Remember It?
« on: December 05, 2011, 03:39:51 am »
Hey,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I am remembering the name and system of a game I used to have properly - that being Miner 649'er for the Commodore 64? I still have my copy of Miner 2049'er, but for a few years now I've been absolutely positive that there was another 'miner x49'er' game besides it, but searching the interweb turns up nothing (except one post on some obscure website where someone also mentions it by name for the C64). Does anyone else remember this game, and happen to remember if it was in fact on the Commodore64, and if not, what was the (other) system? I've looked through my old floppies and cartridges and it is sadly not there, so I can't be sure one way or the other. The game is similar to Dig Dug, but I remember liking it much better. It's driving me insane though not being able to determine if the wonderful game from my childhood really exists, or if I am just misremembering! Thanks.

Could it have been a VIC-20 game? In those days they had no scruples at all copying other games and just slightly alter the name and game play...

I know the game you are referring to for the C64, it was called Boulder Dash.  Very much like dig dug.

Hm nope I thought it might be Boulder Dash also, Ark, but it isn't it. The game I am thinking of you controlled a little man that started on the surface of the level. You then rode a small elevator down into the ground (any amount you wanted on the screen) and then started digging through the dirt picking up stuff (like gold?). You could at any time though re-enter the elevator, go back to the surface, and there was either a bank and/or a store on top that you could deposit your findings, or buy tools. When in the cave I think you died because random sections of dirt were filled with water and it could cause a flood, thus drowning the ambitious worker.

Using the listing site mytymaus posted I started just checking all of the 'Miner' games. From memory (mind you this is what, 25 years ago?), the game looked similar to the image below, except I remember it having more refined colours/graphics (although still Commodore capable). On the note matsadona mentioned, maybe someone else just re-wrote their own version and named it Miner 649'er, or perhaps we simply labeled the floppy that way for some strange reason.

After seeing the two 'Miner' games for C64 that look to be similar, I'm even more sure I was playing it for the ol'Commodore. Unfortunately I've still been unable to actually find a visual of it or what/who the title/author was. I'm gonna spend a bit more time looking through some real disks and also through some romsets online, but I may have to settle for only memories lol

Thanks for the help.

Heh definitely wasn't Lode Runner or Impossible Mission, although I owned both and loved them! They're actually 'must haves' that are on my machine now. As for O'Riley's Mine, it looks more similar to what I used to play. Maybe the game actually WAS "Miner", I just remember it being fancier than it actually is?

No one can remember the helicopter game I'm talking about either?

What I remember is you were in a helicopter, shot out the ground, and had to get treasures out of the ground with the helicopter.  There was water 'things' under the ground that could flood your tunnels as well.  Treasures changed on each level.

It looked like an activision game, if I'm remembering the graphics right.

Miner 2049er had a sequel: Bounty Bob Strikes Back

Mr Robot and the Robot Factory was similar to Miner and was very good.

A game similar to Dig Dig is Mr Do.

Go to YouTube and read the markvergeer's comment on this video: www youtube com/watch?v=FQ8lj-UkqOw

(I left out the periods in the domain name to prevent the video from appearing in the forum.  The video is unimportant.)

This looks promising, too: Space Helicopter

Hrm...nope.

When you start, the ground is all solid, then you carve out paths with your bullets that shoot stright down or at an angle/arc depending on your facing.

Asked a bunch of friends this weekend and no one remembered it...annoying!

Thanks.

I recall the same game you're talking about. I remember it was for the Comadore Pet Computer, and our disk was labeled Miner 649'er also. But I think I found the game here: http://www.mobygames.com/game/pet/miner

I just created an account to post this lol, so I hope this is what you're looking for!
