DARKADE - Imperial Bartop Art and MALA Layout
« on: December 03, 2011, 11:52:24 am »
I've been working on my bartop: Arcade of Monkey Island http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=115942.0 for a bit but I started not to feel the art anymore  :banghead:.  I wanted something a bit edgier so I drew this up last night.  It feels a bit busy but I like the chunky-ness  :blah:.  I'm looking for any suggestion on color, splatter, characters, to spice it up.  Maybe some Imperial Guards would be nice but where to put them...  Thanks for the feedback.  MALA Layout to follow once I get the outside the way I like it.

Your going to have to move either the spinner or the storm trooper, because it looks like you are tweaking his nose, which kind of takes the edge off the edgy theme, which I like, by the way.

Some tweaks... can't figure out where to put the spinner other than dead center... suggestions?

Looking good -- I really like the edgy/dark theme!  Not sure there is much you can do about the spinner, as the helmet is perfect there.  Maybe use a white top on the spinner to try to match the trooper color.

You could replace the spinner with a trackball.  Then the trooper would look like he had a ball gag on!  :P  BTW, the position of the left joystick is also somewhat suggestive.

Seriously, the artwork looks good.  I don't know what you could do besides modify the art to move things around.  Personally, I like to have the CP art worked around the controls but I've seen plenty that work well as more of a background image.  Keep us updated, I'm a sucker for Star Wars.

That's a good point Sam, I do have a the lower front panel on the cab that hasn't been designed yet.  I could shift the current CPO down to that panel and it would only need the coin, player, and admin buttons (5 total) which could be fit in without disrupting the art too much.  As for a new CPO I will play around with something kinda like a deathstar control panel if I can find a good image springboard.  Maybe I'll retool one of the 10,000 tronesque CPOs out there.  Suggestions?

Retooled CPO to highlight the controls and added frontpanel art with the player and coin buttons.  Thoughts?

I love your design.  Have you thought about using the Star Wars Aurabesh font for the admin buttons?

Definitely better with the troopers on the front panel.

Further minor tweaks, added Aurebesh and think it's groovy.    WP34.  Might be time to put a fork in this one.  Any other fixes?

Looks awesome.  I wanted to a Star Wars themed cab but couldn't quite pull the theme together the way you have.  Nice job.

Looking good!  No more 'Very happy to be here Stormtroopers' or 'Clowntroopers'.   :D  Everything comes together nicely.  Now let's see that build!

Looking VERY good!  I should have thought of this!  One thing you could do, add the green.  Both in splatters and on the speeder bike, etc.  I think it would add some nice contrast and a bit of color.  But keep it dark...

Initial build pics will go up on the announcement thread this weekend.  I'll be prototyping the cab as I'm doing a rotateable monitor and will likely have to jack up the height on my current design.  I received all my groovy game gear goodies today and will get a mock CP laid out as well (red aluminum high-low spinner is sick!).  If all goes to plan I'll be cutting wood NLT monday or tuesday.  Art will be sent off for printing once I get my final measurements off the cab (I've found it's much easier to fit the art to the cab than vice versa).  I really appreciate all the feedback and will get the psd files posted on this thread once I'm done moding the art.  Please continue to make sugestions as I wouldn't have the great product I do now without your help!

Nice original look, cool colors. No TIE Fighters, though? So iconic to the Empire. :)

Check the marquee, I believe some TIE Interceptors are tucked away between the TIE Pilot and the Super Star Destroyer.

Rough draft of MALA Layout.  I'll post to MALA once I get the art squared away.  BTW totally stole and revamped elements of WoLLiEnZ's TRON layout from here.
As usual comments and critiques are welcome

Awesome - love the theme and design.  :applaud:
Just so happens I'm borrowing your genre and scroll idea - I'm sure it can be animated, might have to try it out
My art is always free for you to download and modify as you see fit...
Why?... because I could never find any art I loved on the net. So I played around with Photoshop and wish to share it with the arcade community.

I'm loving the art and can't wait to see the finished product.  I might have to take you up on linking you to my build thread as I'm just about to start a Xbox coinops bartop.  BTW any chance you do commissions?

Not at this time, other priorities and such - thanks for asking!  I know that Opt2Not, Gbeef (unsure how active he is these days), Snaake, and Malenko all do from time to time...among others.  Check the BST vendors for artists for hire http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/board,56.0.html
