MameUI64 Zaxxon analog joystick
« on: November 19, 2011, 10:50:32 pm »
Hello,

I was playing Zaxxon on an 8 way joy. No problems, frame speed works fine, I have an 8 way analog joy with trigger buttons I would prefer to use for the real game experience. The Joystick is HD 8 way tigger joystick.

How do I configure this into MameUI64?. I of course looks at the default options, but not too sure what to do.

I noticed when I tried to use the analog Joy, it would not work , but it does affect the frame skip if I push up or down..

Thanks in advance.

JC

The Zaxxon Joystick is 8-way. An 8-way joystick is digital and uses 4 switches. An analog stick uses two potentiometers. To use an analog stick with MAME, you need to use an analog encoder, or hack a gamepad with analog inputs. I think MAME can convert analog signals to use as 8-way, but an 8-way stick would work best. There are a few different 8-way trigger sticks that are similar to the Zaxxon stick.

Thanks Paul,

This is the joystick I am trying to use:

I was told it was analog, but I think it is digital. The problem is how do I configure Zaxxon to read this joy. As I mentioned the only thing it does is change the frame skip. It does have 4 switches. I can't upload the pic from my IPad. I will try from my lap.

Thanks for the support.

It is an 8 way joystick and should connect as a regular 8 way plus switches.   The default in zaxxon is an 8 way joy so it should work if this is your main player 1 joy connected to up down left and right.

Can you give any details?   What controller is it going to and how is it wired?

Thanks for the help. I have that 8 way Joy (see link above). It is wired to an Ipac 4 and connected to the 4SW 1-4 for the directions a d 5&6 for the trigger buttons. From what I understand if you use Mame (non GUI)' you can hit tab to make changes to the controls. Since I am currently using MameUI64, that is not an option here.

Let me know what other info I can provide.

Thanks
JC

Using mame UI you can still make changes on a per game setting.   Just hit tab when you are in zaxxon and the menu will come up.

I have tried that and tab does nothing. I know it will allow you enter control setup, but for some reason it will not allow me to now.

Sounds like your tab key may have been reasigned.  If you delete default.cfg it will bring you back to the original settings and tab should work.  It is in your cfg directory.

I may be wrong but doesn't Mameui have some kind of tab setting up top that you use for setting inputs.

Bob,

Finally got it, thank you for the help. The trigger now controls great. The only issue is when moving the joy up or down, the frame speed option is still being controlled by this joy. Any thoughts on how to stop it or change it?

Thanks again
JC

Probably have to change the frame speed control to different keys.   This would probably be in a general menu.

In the tab menu, under input (general), user interface, check to see if frameskip dec and frameskip inc are mapped to those inputs.
