Black Friday: 60" TV?
« on: November 16, 2011, 10:39:16 am »
I've never done any Black Friday shopping before but would really like a 60" TV for the living room. We are still rocking our 36" standard def tube of 12 years. This looks like a good deal from Sears at $999 on Friday:
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...6x000001&aff=Y
What do y'all think? Best deal for 60"? Are they even remotely possible to get before they are sold out? Do I have to camp out?

I'd like to hear from some of you Black Friday veterans.

Also what's to stop someone from buying the TV now, returning it on Black Friday, then changing your mind right then and there and re-purchase it at the Black Friday price?

Best Buy and HH Gregg will have a non-LED 60" Aquos for $799.

Camp out, bring pepper spray, train your cardio, learn to elbow old ladies.  Nothing goes faster on black friday than bigass TVs.

It really is amazing how low some of these televisions are now compared to even last year.  Three years ago that TV was probably well over a grand.  Now it's $200?  Weird.

200$ for a 42" tv? Wow.

The time may be approaching quickly when I build one of those 3 monitor virtual pinball cabs.

We're all thinking that about the pinball cabs.  Might be time to set up BYOP.  I hope this doesn't lead to a ton of parted out widebody DMD games.

You aren't kidding.  The folks who get the insane deals are the ones who put in the 6 hrs, sometimes time in the coldest, nastiest weather imaginable (at least where I live),  If the savings on a cheap quality TV is "make or break" for you, then be there as soon as they start queuing people up.  Otherwise, you won't get one.

But in all honesty, there's a reason why those TV's are being sold for the prices they are.  If you track the life and/or operating issues of some of these special models on a site like avsforum.com, you will usually find that you get little more than you are actually paying for.  I know this from a experience a few years back.  This applies mostly to the "too good to be true" deals, but if one can get a decent deal on a normal, higher end model, it's a safer bet.  Those deals are usually available without camping out as well.

LC60LE6300 is the model I'm looking at.  Can't find anything on longevity nor any reviews.  I'd be looking at a $400 savings.  I'm not willing to camp out for it, but I would punch my mother in law in the face if that helps.

I'm spooked by the fact that it doesn't exist in the public discourse.  The model number generates a ton of hits, but not a single comment out there from anyone who owns one.  The Aquos brand is well known, and it's unlikely that it will be in the same league as the $200 "Emerson", or any of the other old names slapped onto the generic Chinese imports you will never find repair parts for.  It's probably a safer bet, and I doubt you will need to camp out to get one, as the $1000 TV's don't go as fast as the cheap ones.  Some of the similar deals on more expensive TV's at Wal-Mart, usually linger on through the weekend (and beyond) and it will probably be the same this year, given the poor economy.

I'd also be wary about buying a $1000 TV "sight unseen".  It's a pretty sizable investment, so see if you can find a display model (at Sears?) prior to making a decision.  If you like it, get there early!

I was all set to buy a Black Friday TV this year until I stumbled on a open box sony bravia 40" from sears for $299. I have the exact same TV in a 32 inch flavor and love it. Now I have a nice TV(two really), and get to sleep in on Black friday.

I'm surprised there isn't a 60" plasma with similar or lower pricing for Black Friday.

Stopped by Sears tonight to check out the Sharp 60" LED TV.  Salesman said they will price match provided you do it during the "Door Buster" hours, so I can actually buy the TV early to make sure I get one immediately otherwise it may have to be shipped from the warehouse.  This TV isn't limited to quantities on hand, just warehouse quantities.
Looks like project new TV is a go.  Wife is happy, she's been more anxious to replace our old TV than I have.

You guys should keep in mind that plasama tv’s don’t last very long.

Example I bout one of the first HD DLP tv’s 60’ Sony Grand WEGA back in 2003. I still have this TV in 2011 and never had a problem with it.
People that I know who own Plasama TV’s have always told me it brook after the first two years of ownership. A Plasama 60’ TV that coast a $1000, lets just say don’t hold your breath.

I had my 42" panasonic plasma for over 3 years. still works like new. most plasma tvs have like 10 years before the brightness dims or whatever. by then Id get a new TV anyway.

We've had our 42" Samsung Plasma in the basement for over 5 years now, granted it doesn't see a lot of use.  Heavy beast it is.  I see now they are about the same weight as a traditional LCD TV.  The LCDs appeal a bit more to me for our living room since it tends to be quite bright in there at times and there is less glare from the LCDs.  The glare on our tube TV has been a constant annoyance.

Actually, there is a lot of data out there on Plasmas dying early.  It's not the plasma tech, though, it's poor manufacturing.  Power supplies, encoders, etc.  Sony especially but others do it too.  Maybe the real story here is to avoid Sony altogether.  They had major issues in their HD RPTVs, then again in their LCDs, and also in their plasmas.

Coworkers newer LCD died recently.  Wasn't a Sony.  Mainboard problem.  It's not just the plasmas or Sony's with poor electronics issues.

newegg is selling 60" zenith plasma for 900. great deal if I actually had the room lol..

anyway I have some questions about 3d tvs. hopefully random people around here drop some random knowledge. I never even seen one of these 3d tvs in person before. not sure what to expect.

- is $784(after tax..damn) shipped for a 46" full HD good price? this one.
http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/TC-P46ST30

- I dont care about any fighting game input lag. this will be for movies, random xbox/ps3 gaming. now how good are ps3 3d games?

- ps3 can play 3d blurays(and "obtained" movies) just fine? I dont feel like buying a bluray player(my wallet is already pwnt lol) just to have the newest technology.

any other info anyone can post. go ahead. thanks in advance!!

I just bought a 47" 3d TV for $900 that included a 360 slim and a game.  So $784 for 46" is okay, but you can probably do better between now and christmas.

But I wouldn't pay extra for 3D.  It's still not worth it.  You'll lose some color, and either resolution or frame rate (or sometimes both).  I haven't seen a game or movie that's better in 3D.  It's just a cool novelty for an hour or two.

@SNAAKE:
This is a spot on observation.  Buy a TV which has a great 2D image, as that is what you will be watching 99% of the time.  Worry about 3D afterward, if you really want it.

That being said, the Panasonic plasmas are among the best (I own 3), so I don't think you would be disappointed in the performance of the model you are looking at.

yeah I am very happy with my 42" 720p panasonic. thats why I am not even considering other brands now. and I checked all the prices, its $95 less for the 46" without 3d. Id rather have it.

anyway so where do I get the glasses? any 3d glasses work..like the those "real3d" glasses from movie theaters? or I gotta buy it from panasonic. I can only guess they are expensive lol..

maybe random knockoffs from ebay work too??

Check the specific tv model for the type of glasses.  My LG uses the same polarized passive lenses as the theaters.

Check the specific tv model for the type of glasses.  My LG uses the same polarized passive lenses as the theaters.

He needs the active ones for that model.  I think LG is the only one using the passive glasses (could be wrong, the industry is always changing), and part of that is due to the way the source resolution gets modified in order to achieve that feat.  Technically, the active glasses give a better representation of the full high-def source.  But LG does some tricks to help make up for the resolution issue, and there's no denying the convenience and low cost of the polarized glasses approach.

hows is the 2d to 3d for gaming? any noticeable difference in any games.

I really dont care. I am still ordering that 46".

If you're talking about letting the TV convert a 2D video source to 3D, it looks like absolute crap.  If the game and console don't output one of the standard 3D source modes it's not worth putting the glasses on.

If you're playing a game designed to output in 3D it sometimes looks really nice under the right conditions.  Avatar (the game) in 3D on my PS3 looks really amazing just to stand around and look at the environment.  Unfortunately it's pretty much unplayable in 3D because you lose both frame rate and resolution.  If you use a PC with a good video card 3D gaming is much better.
