I am not sure what graphics card is in it, but she said that when she build the computer 4 years ago, it was a 400$ card, so I assume it is still good. I can't think of any games in specific, but I know the games that get the most play will be a lot of the classics (Galaga, Ms. Pac-man, Donkey Kong etc.), the Metal Slug Series, Street Fighter 2, Ninja Turtles, Bad Dudes, Battletoads, and Double Dragon series. From what you guys are saying, it sounds like all these at least will be fine. I am also going to have console emulators. |

It's still a common misconception about the power required for your average retro gaming station; a modest P3 will still do the job with the correct software setup and a pre-0.106 build of MAME. For those struggling with certain 2D games not based on 5th gen console hardware (eg. Naomi, model 2 etc), bear in mind you'll get much more playable results by setting a fixed frameskip rather than auto. On lower powered machines, if you struggle with certain games as described above (such as the MK series or other similar Midway boards, NeoGeo games or others that should be ok but suffer slowdown when the sprite count is high), turn off auto frameskip and try a set frameskip value of between 1-6. This drops a few frames you will likely not notice, but keep speed consistantly at 90-100% for smoother gameplay. |
