hi and thk-u
do me a fav and tell me the build's u working with

ie 3.6/4.0.0.0 or 4.0.1
this can be seen fron either the first loader disk if u have them?
if not u can in :post: stop the game from loading
and edit the the window's .cfg to expose the explorer task bar
and then u will find a .dir called :pga:
this will expose the rev of the game

a side note here i have olny come across 2 type's of video card's that
it will not work with, but i am sure this is a driver issuie, and i have not looked to far into it yet..

there is something of a note for ppl here
your mobo's are at the age that they need re-capping
this will hold true if u have had a power-supply go south >fail<

also i would replace the 512meg ram with some new 1gig's
because man will the game fly, also i will post a .cfg that will do away with the :player's: card reader, and with the edit u can do just about anything

back to the mobo's
the olny thing i know pga like's is :auto-power: on

sound is carried through a sep amp..but i have put on-board sound card's with built in amp's in
and just redid herculies to point to them

I have one where the AGP slot is flakey.

get yourself a can of contact cleaner. and spray the snot out of it. the way some of the CPU coolers are, they blow dirt right at, and into the AGP connector and RAM slots (being the first slots in the path) removing the card and then re-inserting it causes the dirt to get mashed into the connector. (AGP is real bad for dirt failures in the connector due to the interleaved connections)

contact cleaner should get most of it out and make it better, if you don't want (or cant get any contact cleaner) don't be afraid to pull the board out and strip it of it's battery ram CPU and other removables and spray the crap out of it with the kitchen sink sprayer and maybe a small paintbrush.  :P yeah yeah i know what you're thinking...

as we all know water and electricity don't mix... but, as long as it's bone dry (a few days at least) before you put the battery back and power it up, it will be fine... and squeeky clean.

If I install the game using the oboard video, it loads up a bit before complaining about drivers, but it runs - I get video.  If I use the AGP slot and a known good video card, I get nothing.

let ed know what card you are using and he can set you up with a setup disk with the drivers packed in. from what i've read there is not much to it.

thk-u very much for your reply
and kind word's
yes i agree with u,but as i stated
alot of route-op's would not clean out there fan's ? or at least clean them out thus allowing the mobo to over-heat,also 90% of the video card's were shipped with 0 or at least garbage fan's,thus burnning out the card

what i am working on now
is the final walk around
this will take me a few day's as i am testing a team right now >burn-in<
this 1 is a rev 4.0.0.0
the video problem is now behind me
there is a few thing's i want to touch up in the .cfg's
there is about 6
and i will post code

The CDs I have for PGA Tour Golf Challenge Edition are version 3.0.0.   I have the recovery CD and the two game install CDs.

I can't find the Team Challenge disks at the moment, but they are v 4.0.0.8 according to my notes.  I need to find where I put them!!!

I don't believe the hard drives are bad, but even if they are and have to be replaced, would that be a problem if I have the CDs?

I will need to purchase some caps for the mobo's.  I've done many a monitor and power supply but don't have the right values for motherboards.

FYI again according to my notes, the PS35BL board is an 865G chipset.  I don't know what sound chip is on it (I know it is amplified externally, but the sound chip itself is on the motherboard.  I tried an Intel D845 mobo and got the game to run but with no sound.

I have not purchased a replacement video card yet.  Can you recommend a good one that works with your edits?

Thanks for the reply.

and lilshawn, thanks for the contact cleaner tip.  I'll give that a try!

recovery CD
that is the most important part
when u need to replace the hard-drive
1,2,3 are the game and they place as a overlay
mapping error 53 will come in at the end,if they are the wrong rev for the
recovery disk, this is due to hercules and 3 batch file's in it
if u want to take a crack at the batch file's?
make a .dir in c:
here is what it should look like
c:\rescue disk
copy the content's of the disk into it
make another .dir
c:\rescue\test
copy again the disk into it
now find :advanced renamer:
this is where it get's trickey
but get that done
and get back to me,i will do a walk around in real time right here on the board

Thanks Ed. I have to find a computer that is somewhat running.  I've tried 3 of the 4 so far:

- One just does a hilohilohilohilo continuosly on the pc speaker, won't boot at all.  swapped ram fwiw and did not help.  This has an NB32-SL motherboard.
- One has a broken socket on the motherboard so the cpu does not stay put.  Have not powered it on yet.  (PS35-BL)
- One I just did the contact cleaner spray in the AGP socket this morning, blew it out with ionized compressed air, may try it out tonight but have to add an HDD and psu to the unit.  (PS35-BL)
- Last one is unknown...

I can't wait to get one running to follow along...

BTW does anyone sell Cap Kits for PS35-BL motherboards and the other NB32-SL mobo, like they sell kits for monitors?  :-)

Thank you!  I will be there soon (I hope) with something booting and running on a monitor...

try mouser or digi-key
the cap's olny need be high temp >heat-rated<
1000mf can be replaced with 1500 as long as u DO NOT go below it's rated voltage,ie 6.3vdc CAN NOT BE USED WHERE 16vdc is etc

You are way far ahead of me!  I can't keep up until I get something running.  Sorry I am not up with you yet....   :banghead:

Update: still not running anything.  Tried the mobo with the dead AGP slot.  still nothing after contact cleaner and scrubbing the AGP socket.  I get the power on beep but no video.    :banghead: :banghead:

One more to try...

tell me the spec's for the video card
ie maker/model
and i will show u were to place them in your game

Hmmmm.   A PCI video card...  I wonder if I have one of those somewhere.

I was thinking it might be quicker for me to install the software on the Dell optiplex I tried before.  Game ran but with no sound.

Maybe there is a way to put the Dell optiplex motherboard sound drivers into the game, much like you have figured out how to put different video card drivers into the game?

At least with the Dell I have a working stable platform.  I have yet to get any of the DFI motherboards to boot properly.

Thanks for your help, ideas and patience!  8)

Can the game OS be "taken over" so that drivers, etc, can be installed by running the setup.exe for the driver?

I am at work but think this might be the driver:

ftp://ftp.dell.com/audio/R56339.EXE

My memory says I think it's an optiplex 260GX but of course I'll have to confirm that once I get home...

The file looks like a self extracting zip file.  Maybe it can be extracted and the files placed properly into the game os version of XP.

This would be AWESOME if it worked because dells are everywhere and PGA tour golf games could be revived...

============
FWIW I found this thread:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3513/p/17894096/18017082.aspx#18017082

I wonder why the poster says to reboot windows 3 times before installing the sound driver......

============= another thought
Dell chipset driver is:   http://downloads.dell.com/chipset/R41334.EXE
I may have to install both the chipset driver AND the sound driver to get it to work...   Dells can be funny that way.

What does the above represent?  Are they the entries from "real" PGA computer, or are the entries I need to to find and change to so a Dell GX260 to get its sound to work?

This is interesting info but I don't know what to do with it yet.  Hopefully it will make sense when I finally get in front of the actual machine and begin looking at files.

Thnks!

ps I found this what you posted in the ADIALTGD.ini file in the dell audio driver executable:
{5145B065-3C8D-4f98-8117-1705211B6AAA}="PC Beep"
{621ACC03-5ACF-4d86-BD00-6EB312C42DA4}="Mono Out"
{51B00945-AE8B-419c-8C6E-932988B458D5}="Phone"
{F8BA97F6-0BA7-4709-BF15-A9F15A73FF01}="Video"
{92104267-F762-421d-90FD-3158DC7C77FA}="LFE"
{36FA81C7-7463-48f2-BD47-1D9D34FFCB31}="Center"
{4AB5B6FC-98AE-4009-8FCB-CA063D7CD7FA}="Surround"
{96C1C864-DAB8-45ee-94AF-B349350CFE8E}="Front"
{DE49848A-395C-4239-9C35-EB0A05A1BCDF}="Bass Boost"

Where do I put those values in the windows xpe directory structure?  Or do I have to edit the registry?  which section?

If the {F8BA97F6-0BA7-4709-BF15-A9F15A73FF01}="Video" entry is a problem for you, why not just remove that line from the file and rezip the .exe and run it without that line in it?

Or, where in the registry and/or directory structure can we edit files / values to reflect the changes we want?

Seems like you are getting close...

I have the DELL OptiPlex GX260 up and running.

I installed the Recovery Disk.  Told me to remove cd, turn off computer, turn on computer, wait for Global VR prompt.

Did that- It prompted for "New Hardware Found:  SM Bus Controller" "insert disk with drivers blah blah blah"   I skipped that step

Then the GlobalVR logo showed up and I continued with Game disk1 then Game disk 2.  Game is up/running but No Sound.

Time to start hacking this...

   SUCCESS!!!

I have the game installed and running on a Dell GX260 with SOUND!!!

The real test now is to pop it into a cabinet and see if it really plays.  Sadly the cabinet is a days drive away, so it will be a week or so before I get to that location.

Still, this is awesome!  The video card is an FX5600 so no breakthrough there.  Basically after the system recovery disk installation, I went into windows and installed the two drivers listed in posts above.  The sound driver asked for locations for drmk.sys and wdmaud.sys, which are in c:\windows\system32\drivers and c:\windows\system32  respectively.  I had to do this step 2 times until it booted into the GVR logo w/o prompting or errors.  Inserted the game disk 1 then 2 when prompted, and voila I hear the sound of the ball going into the hole.  It's all good!

Thanks for inspiring me to work on this.  Now to find another computer to try this with.  Two more cabinets need fixing...

Did I read in an earlier post that you could hack it so you can unlock all the players, courses, extras, etc?  Can you share info about that?

I'd also like to understand more about the  operators card, players card, what that means and what can be unlocked.

Also if it can be run without the dongle.

Thank you!!

ed, your posts seem to be about PGA Team Challenge.  I am working on regular old PGA Challenge and the directory structure, filenames, etc, seem different, but I'm looking anyway.  I tried to kill the dongle process in game but that did not work.  Maybe killing the call all together may help but I can see many reasons why it still would not work.

Where is the edit.cfg file located, that you posted above?  I did not find that on the PGA Challenge hard drive at all.  There are very few .cfg's and .bat's on that version.

Thank you!

ps - pm sent

hi
paulstevens

as i explained to u a few cannot leave my box,as i am concered about lic.
but as as i have explained get all of the courses u want
u can build the .cfg to make windows load them
u will need to add the player's/course's/#of hole's/coustom sound
manual..but that is the fun of it
i will make up a full list of the editor's u need
but rem i code olny into winxp with a winxpe overlay when i require it,
for 7 i am not even there

Newbie here and looking for some info. Can you run PGA Golf VR in Windows 7, can I use a new computer, motherboard, monitor, and video card?   Brother-in-law upgraded his game recently then motherboard got hit by power surge.  He wants me to either use his Mamet machine or build him a new computer.

PGA Tour Golf coinop game runs on embedded windows xpe. Does not run in windows 7. It -may- be possible to use different hardware assuming some level of similarity with the original.

I don't know anything about mamet so cannot comment about that.

Ed, is the all access pass still available?  How can I get it activated on my machine?

I'm not sure if the cabinet I bought has it or not.  It has the Team challeng recovery disk plus 3 game disks, but that's it.  I'm reading that all access pass was made available to allow additional courses for offline games.

Seems the online version of Team Challenge had 25 courses available, but offline games were limited to 11 courses.  All Access pass allows offline games access to all 25 courses.

I would enjoy playing those courses.  Thank you!

hi
please read what i have been saying
it is winxp>e<,i have no clue as to can i convert to run in 7
nor do i care to try, here is the scoop
the os embeded :ie: it take's control of the box
and run's as the main :os:,where window's is used for the gui's/audio-etc
u can at start with a mouse and keyboard to control it
but once u reboot it will again take control
also as u should have caught through the thread, add the driver's nessary
ie sound as paulsteven's found out, same apply's to video to swap out card's,as the native 4200 is no longer to be had..
that said its has moved on to tweak's

The reason they used Windows XPe is because they got a deal on the licencing since the unit boots to the game and not the desktop. There should be no real reason you couldn't just load it with some other OS like  xp, vista, or 7... since windows XPe is esentially a stripped down version of XP (only the basic drivers and programs needed for running are included and installed.)

and winxpe is yes striped down :user: defined-for driver's
but u can acess the desktop and load driver's through it
the problem ppl are going to have is simple
7 come's in 2 flavour's 32/64
pga is 32
think of the nightmare there

of course there is the 64/32 bit dilemma, but windows 7 has a compatibility mode for older programs...to what end...and what performance ding you might expect i have no idea. Applications which most commonly have compatibility issues are what are referred to as "kernal mode" applications and older 16-bit applications.  Examples might include old versions of DOS-based disk applications, anti-virus applications, may not support 64-bit because they required direct access to memory, hardware, direct disk writes... etc. all of which was removed when the operating systems went on lockdown with windows xp and everything is kernaled through the OS.

Ed, do you know if the game utilizes direct-x or openGL for it's graphics subsystem or did they write a their own program that access the video subsystem?

ed12 - thanks for the info.

I believe I was confusing PGA Challenge with TEAM Challenge.  I have "Challenge" running but have yet to find my "TEAM Challenge" disks.  I have the dongle but no disks.

Looking forward to tweaking both versions but for now I can only work on "Challenge".

Thanks!
