Now today we can have any game we want,  so long as the only game we want is a Shooter,  and we'll get a grand total of about 8 hours of gametime out of it if we're really lucky.

I don't know if you're talking about PS3 games only, but if it's gaming in general then that's just not true, man.

It seems like every genre is experiencing more development than ever, especially if you count in indie games, xbox live arcade, psn games, steam, and stuff that comes out for phones and portables.

Name any genre, I bet we can name 5 great games that came out in the last 5 years for it.

Vigo:

I don't think there has really been 5 great traditional RPG's in the last 5 years. (non-MMO, Turn based)

Benevolance:

Star Ocean: The Last Hope was a decent turn-based, non-MMO RPG. The voice acting was a little weak, especially compared to Till The End of Time, but the game mechanics were pretty solid and there was lots and lots of side-quest action. Umm...I'm sure we can come up with 4 more.

Okay, I'll concede your point. :D

The most recent Final Fantasy games were pretty disappointing. I thought that FFXII was going in the right direction with its changes - semi-turn-based, overland combat, great character customization, and the Gambit system for programming AI actions was genius - but FFXIII scrapped everything and went back to Dragon Warrior 4-style "My AI Companions Are Complete Retards" combat system.

But re: SNES vs PS2 numbers...I bet a fair number of us had to get our parents to buy the SNES console. But when PS2 came out, many of us probably had the cash monies to buy consoles ourselves, and multiple different consoles. There wasn't the Sega vs Nintendo decision like in the early years - you simply bought them all. :)

Jack Burton:

Final Fantasy 12
Dragon Quest 9
Mother 3
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
The Last Remnant
Blue Dragon
Persona 3

Just off the top of my head and little bit of looking around wikipedia.  There's a lot of RPG development going on in the portable platforms.

Vigo:

Well, FF12, Mother 3 and Persona 3 were all release more than 5 years ago. (Although, I read that Persona3 is pretty good game. Mother 3 was just the game from 1994 that was never released. I would not call all those games great either.

You could probably look and find at least 10-20 rpgs on the handhelds that are good, but the are mostly rehashes, sequels and spin-offs. My point is I don't think there has been much that is great on it's own merits.

I never tried any of the star ocean games, but this one does look pretty good. Maybe I'll give it a go. :)
