Author getting big bucks for another book aimed toward video game fans:
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/ready-player-one-author-inks-397998

Also read that the movie rights for Ready Player One were bought by Warner Bros before the book even hit the shelves.
The original author drafted a screenplay, but there are so many references to things that would have to be licensed to appear in a movie,
that it might never get made or would be stripped of most of the nostalgia that makes it great.

5 chapters in and I'm loving it so far! I'm really digging the video game and 80s references!
Fun book!

I read it and enjoyed the first half.  The second half started to get a little over the top and pandering with the reference dropping.  The "love story" of it was terrible throughout.  A decent book.  Not great in my opinion.

They wont have any problem at all getting the licensing rights for the different things mentioned in the book. Hell, half the companies will probably PAY to be in the movie.  It's like a pre-packaged commercial for everything involved.

Me, too. I heard about the book through this thread. Just finished it last night. What an '80s pop culture geekfest.

Ernest Cline Visited Oculus VR to test out the rift

It's funny that you mention this, because when I read about the OASIS visor, the Oculus Rift immediately came to mind.

I had the exact same opinion.  Right after obtaining the first key the book started to fall apart for me.  It was still overall a decent read, it just seemed like the author had a really good vision up to and including that first key, and then didn't really have much of an outline except for a decent final battle near the end.

Also...probably overdid it with the spoiler tag...but I HATE thinking I might be giving anything away.

Looks like they've hired a writer for the movie adaptation:
http://www.theverge.com/entertainment/2014/6/24/5839192/zak-penn-ready-player-one-pacific-rim-2
Based on his resume, I'd say this is happening.  Whether it's good or not might come down to how much stuff referenced in the book can be licensed.
It won't be the same with generic, never really existed retro stuff.

Ernest Cline's next book still isn't out btw.
He's got a bunch of stuff from the Atari E.T. Cartridge dig up on his site.
He dressed up as Eliot and brought a speak 'n spell along.   :lol

Thanks for bumping. I missed this one back then, and am interested in reading this book!

+1 - meant to read it awhile back and forgot -- though just found the audiobook for download so may just listen to it rather than read it ! (though it looks like the audiobook is about 16 hours so may take awhile !)

Exactly what I was thinking --- faster to read it but can listen and do other things so will probably use a combination of the 2.

I'm not really that uppity with reading material, but I stopped reading the book after only a few chapters. Referencing things just for the sake of referencing them was really, really annoying.

What, no Urkel in that montage?

I'm going to have to agree with you on that one. I read the whole book in like two days, and while I enjoyed it, I can't say it was a great book. I really think he missed the boat at the end by assembling this skilled team others, only to have none of them be of any actual use in the end. If there is a film, I hope the screenwriter can tighten up some of the weak areas of the plot.

Well I finally got round to reading this book. It was fairly well written but I didn't really feel anything for the characters.  I think it could have done with being quite a bit longer, maybe more gates would have been a good Idea.  I really enjoyed a lot of the references made throughout the book. Hopefully the film can find a good way of recreating stuff like the interactive movie scenes.

Yeah, I had fun reading it,  but it's not a great book. It has a lot of fun references that people enjoy reading about, but ultimately it's a lot of flash with no real substance.

It was a pulp novel.  Enjoyable read, but definitely not something that will be written about 30 years from now.  If you were alive in the 80's, read it.  Otherwise, probably not.

Agreed. I've read it twice, I'd probably reread it again, but it's not the life-changing piece of literature some make it out to be.

Eh, same shtick but focused on sci-fi movies & games.
It won't work a third time.

On the movie, the question is whether or not they can license enough stuff for the member berries to work their magic.

To be clear I'm not saying his second was a great book.  But his writing very much improved.  It wasn't peppered with random 80's references every other paragraph anyway.

And this is where I had a bit of an issue. Not only did some of the references feel forced, but I felt like I was reading a specific list of someone's favorite things. And not necessarily 80s. I didn't care for the references to Tarrentino because he's definitely a product of the 90s.

I have a feeling the people who think RPO is a great book probably don't read very many of them. It's a fun book, yes, but not great.

It's a fun book, yes, but not great.
Like movies, people put too much emphasis on everything has to be criterion quality, epic masterpieces. Just take it for what it is, entertaining.

Last year I read through a whole gamut of classic sci-fi, from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? to Fahrenheit 451 to the Foundation series. All great reads, classics, incredible writing and creativity for their time. Heck, some ideas are in standard sci-fi today!
This year I've been continuing through the Ender series and Star Wars novels. Not the the best writing for sure, but definitely entertaining. Actually for the Ender series I'm more addicted than anything.

My point is, RPO has a lot of fun points that make it a guilty pleasure. I recommend it to people who would get the references, but are also interested in sci-fi stories as it harkens back to the classic virtual world voyerism ideas that were set forth by classic novels like Neuromancer and the like.

And with VR being the trend now, it's makes sense that Hollywood is jumping on anything related to cash in on.

Yes, it was a huge ripoff of Neuromancer.  The author also likes Rush way too much.  Having any positive  opinion about Rush besides indifference is thinking too much about Rush.
