My first project! Rose Bowl Run - Wis. Badgers
« on: December 29, 2005, 09:37:50 pm »
I got some money for Christmas to get me started, so I am going to start my first project. It will be a Wisconsin Badgers themed cab. I'm on a small budget, so we'll see how it turns out, but if all goes as planned it will look great.  I have a couple of questions though. First off, has anybody tried using OBO wood? Is it strong enough for a cab? Its cheaper than MDF, so I was thinking about trying that. Also, I need an opinion on my control panel. I like everything, but I think something needs to be changed where the stadium is. The red boxes are where the buttons will be.

What, Ron Dayne was the only guy to ever go to Wisconsin?

Throw Brent Moss up there too.  Got a mug shot?  ;D

How about the great cross-reference of today, Mark Tauscher?

Crazy Legs Hirsch?

Al Toon?

Marcus Randle El?

Joe Panos?

And to top it all off, you've GOTTA make it play "You've said it all" when you fire it up!

I'm a huge Dayne fan, so I wanted him by the player one and two sides.  Any suggestions? Does anybody know if OBO is good enough wood?

Isnt Wisconsin playing Auburn in the Capital One Bowl?  Too lazy to check if Wis. played in the Rose Bowl last year.  Ah well...WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR EAGLE!!!!!!    HEY!

GO TIGERS.

on a side note and to keep on topic..  I like the football concept.  Needs to be Orange and blue though.

I'm pretty much finished with the artwork for the cab. I decided to go pretty plain with the marquee, but I liked the way it looked. I'm not as great with that kind of stuff as some of you, so I'm a bit more limited. If anybody has any suggestions to make it better, let me know. Its going to be printed soon.

Oh, and I guess Auburn found out who else has played for Wisconsin.  :)

Here's the bezel I think I'll be going with. The black represents the monitor screen.

I'll be trying something a bit different with the sides of the cab, so hopefully it'll turn out nice. We are going to try to do the whole thing two or three weekends from now, so hopefully I'll have pictures by mid-Feb. We're going to try to get it all put together in one weekend, so wish us luck!

Alright, I'm finally getting the pictures from this project up. We got the whole cab put together on 1 Saturday, which was great. It took us all day, but it was nice to spend some quality time with my Dad. I painted it and put the t-molding on it after I got it into the appartment. I put a trap down while painting, and since we didn't have a router, I hot glued the t-molding. I should have never started playing it before I got done painting though! It is hard to finish up the project when you start playing the games!
Anyway, here are the pictures. I borrowed a digital camera from a friend, and it is really old, so there is a bit of a pink tint on the bezel, but it really is a nice red color. Some thing with the control panel. Oh, the last picture is of the autographed Ron Dayne football I have, with the cert. of authenticity, and a Dayne pennent. It is kind of hard to see.

Cool!  I really like that layout for mamewah.  Great job on the whole thing.  I like the idea of making the cabinet like a football player.  I am currently working on my last cabinet.  It is OSU themed.  I have built one before that was OSU themed and I'm taking one more crack at it.  Please be sure to post as many pics as you can.  Do you plan on putting a coindoor on the front there?  Are you going to school there?

Unfortunatly, those are the only pictures I have of it. I don't have a digital camera, so I didn't take any pictures while I was making it.  Yeah, I'll probably have a coin door there eventually. I decided against it for now, just because I'm in college and ran out of money. I go to a different school in Madison, but have always been a huge Badgers fan.

I believe it is a type of pressed wood, used in home construction.

He might be right. I'm not sure what it is. I ended up using MDF.  I like the way it turned out. I wanted something that looked a bit more unique in the design, and although a curved upper half isn't earth shattering, I really like it.

Rose Bowl Run Revisited
« Reply #17 on: February 23, 2012, 10:00:11 am »
I've decided to make some updates to my arcade. When I originally built the machine, I didn't think there would be much use for a trackball. A lot of my friends, however, wanted to play the old Golden Tee games. The first step in the renovation was to re-due the control panel. To shape the facemask design more like an actual facemask, I angled the control panel. Pictures below.

The new issue I've run into is that I have a 6 foot 8 inch tall friend who likes to play Golden Tee. The problem with this is he smashes his hand against the plexi whenever he plays. I ended up moving the monitor back about a foot to allow you to reach into the arcade without hitting the screen. Not sure I'm sold on this design yet. You can kind of see what I'm talking about in the second picture. I know I could have angled the control panel and the screen, but I use it to play games like Blitz and NBA Jam, so I would rather have a flat control panel for comfort. Anyone have thoughts on this design?

Looks great!  I'm from Green Bay, so I am a Badgers fan as well.   I love the new control panel.  I love that the trackball is his nose, and that you've arced your buttons.   Hard to tell that the control panel is angled from the pictures, but I do prefer a slightly angled CP personally.   But it's all about what you prefer yourself, so whatever works for you.   I've never had any comfort issues on my angled CP.   As for the recessed monitor, it looks ok from what I can tell in the pictures.  With Golden Tee, unless you've got a pedestal CP, you're always going to run into people hitting the screen because they try to wail on it like they do in the bars.  I've had to adapt to the two thumb approach on my arcade to avoid the problem.

Anyway, great job,  go Bucky!

Thanks. I thought about turning it into a Packers themed arcade, but I didn't really want to repaint the whole thing. I'll try to get some better pictures of it tonight. Still need to do some sanding, painting, and T-molding.
