To Do:
  • Replace shroud with better condition piece (this one has cig burns)
  • Replace glass bezel & marquee with PPI parts (already have)
  • Sand and repaint gas pedal and apply new non skid (anyone have a source for non skid?)
  • Replace steering wheel, redo CPO with a repro
  • Fix cabinet front corners
  • Do the 5V mod to the PP board, switching power supply mod (PP and PPII boards should be on the way soon!)
  • Clean up coin door, get new inserts
  • Possibly new side art?  We'll see

Very nice pickup.  What's the status on the monitor?

Supposedly working.  Don't have a board yet to be able to check it.  Has some PP burn in, should look ok when on.

Pole Position cockpit topper, but it also fits on uprights. Looks pretty sweet.

At home, can see it now.  If it said engine brake, and not foot brake, I might jump on that.  Someone has already asked about that being a possibility.

I have the screen glass and marquee already.  Do you happen to have a good cardboard bezel that goes between the monitor and glass?  Mines a bit warped.

Update:

Looked inside the cabinet, the monitor has no chassis.   :badmood:  The guy did tell me that it had no boards, I just didn't think that included the monitor.  Oh well.  There is a guy selling complete working 19" monitors for cheaper than I can get a new chassis, so I think I'll go that route.

In the good news department, there are some parts on their way to me, courtesy of Malenko:
  • Good condition plastic shroud
  • 2 PPI and 1 PPII pcb

I also ordered a repro CPO from thisoldgame.com.

Moving right along...   :applaud:

Ok... dilemma.

I plug in the PPI boardset and get this:

When I plug in the PPII board, I get nothing but green.

The other PPI boardset has burnt pcb edge connectors and bent roms... so untested so far.

Also note, the monitor in this thing has no chassis, so I would need another 19" arcade monitor.

I have a 19" PC monitor, I could just dump a PC in this thing and go with shifter MAME.

So... should I go with shifter MAME and a PC, or should I keep trying to repair these boards and hope for the best.  I know these boards can be a pain.

Thoughts?

at least get 1 set of boards working ;)

check the voltages and everything, I had no way to test the boards before I shipped them off, they may have been bad. Im sure with 2 sets of PP boards and your skills. you can get 1 working. Im currently looking into perhaps dropping a PC into 1 of my PPs, I think Im gonna sell the other one, especially if I got no working boards

I'm trying...

I noticed one of the ROM legs was broken off on the set I was testing, so I swapped it for the other PPI chip, get the same results.

Hrmmmmm

It's alive! Sort of...

I was able to play for like 5 minutes, then it glitched out again.

I think I'm gonna stick with the PP boards now.  Do the 5V mod, the AR2 mod, and see what that gets me.  I noticed some corrosion on some of the ROM legs, so I'll remove them and clean them, too.

Awesome, getting close!

If cleaning those ROM legs doesn't fix the glitching, you can try replacing their sockets.  Old Atari boards are notorious for their cheap sockets...

So... 1 prob down...  just the boards to go, then all will be functional, and all that will be left is cosmetic.

I want that PPII stuff if you arent gonna use it, assuming you can get the PPII board runnin.
I sent you both PP1 sets, cause I figured worst case you can frankenstein one together =)

Both of those monitors work? I think ALL THREE I have are dead (1 DEFINITELY is, chassis is cracked, tube dont looks good, and theres a giant GAME OVER burn in , in the middle)

its a start, dont give up hope, we all believe in you =)

Yup, both work, the blue is a little wonky on one, but the other is perfect.  $85 for the pair...

Oh, I'm not giving up...   :D

PP2 stuff?  Like bezel, marquee, etc?

Yeah, one of the PPI boards I've been scavenging parts off of, since it had the exploding battery problem, and there is corrosion everywhere in like a 4 inch circle.

So, I've done the sense mod on both AR2 boards, I've done the mod where you connect up all the +5V test points and all the GND test points for better power distribution, and adjusted the AR2 until the voltage reads 5.0 at the board.

Still nothing.

How do I even know if the AR2 boards are any good?

Although... I'm debating with myself on how original I want to keep it...

It is possible to go with a switching power supply and get rid of the AR boards as well.  You would just need a couple of audio amps to replace them, similar to what whammoed did:

Nice. How are you fixing the broken corner piece on the left-hand front side?

Going to glue the piece back, and use bondo to fill in the gap.  I'll probably end up getting the repro side art in the end, too.  This thing is gonna be minty when I'm done!  :applaud:

Sweet. As I pretty much played the game at Peter Piper Pizza, you might want to smear some tomato sauce on the wheel and shifter to get that air of authenticity!

Well, after smoking the big resistor on one of the AR boards while adjusting to get 5.0 volts, I've decided to go the switching power supply route with a couple of mono sound amps.

So no more finicky Atari power system and big blues...

But.... I'll even buy the pizza!  Can we at least spill soda on your carpet for that sticky walking feel?

Haha...  no, no soda on the carpet.  I do plan on getting some blacklight carpet for the gameroom, though.

How's the work coming on this?

I now have the switching power supply, and the two audio amp kits needed to replace ALL of the Atari power setup.  No more big blue, no more AR boards.   >:D

Now I just have to put it together and hope that's what was causing the board glitch.   :dunno
