High Score Competition rules and scoreboard
« on: January 04, 2015, 01:03:21 pm »
Welcome to the *new* BYOAC High Score Competition!

Each competition runs for two weeks.  Simply upload a screenshot or picture of your high score in the competition game thread to enter.  At the end of the year, the member with the most points wins the coveted Bronze Joystick trophy!

1st place : 3 points
2nd place : 2 points
3rd place : 1 point, and chooses the next competition game
(least games played determines winner if there is a tie at year end)

General Rules:
- One credit, no continues/save states/autofire/hacks etc.
- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members

greets,
is pausing a game in mame to take a break seen as 'ok' or is that frowned upon?
also, what about watching youtube videos (or faq's/guides) of pros so you can discover secrets or ways to get high scores, is that something which is accepted?

I think pauses are ok.  We all have spouses, kids, jobs, etc. that interrupt our nerd wars from time to time.

Actually if you look through the various game threads you'll find people link to game play videos or give tips and strategies right up front.  It's a friendly competition after all

cool, i agree both should be seen as 'ok' :)
a suppose a pcb owner would be at a disadvantage though because they cant pause it.. but anyways ;D

^This -- Figure Pauses are OK but Save States are not (since with a Pause it is still a single game play while with Save state you might be tempted to try more than once from the position you saved at !

I think it's also OK to hit F10 to advance long intro's rom load times, etc.  Correct?

For example, in Donkey Kong, I usually fast forward the intro when Donkey Kong climbs up the girders and stomps on them.  It adds up to a lot of time if you waited all that out multiple times.

Thoughts?

i forgot to ask that also, can you fast forward parts of the game when u are waiting and can u reset the game as many times as u want if u want to retry  (rather than have to lose all of your lives on purpose and go through the game over sequence etc)
obviously the advantage of the above means u can get more attempts in, with the time you have available to play

sorry for the annoying questions

You guys are really overthinking this.  It's just a friendly competition.  If it feels like cheating, quit doing whatever you're doing.

New rule: if you're a champ for the year, you have to screw this to your cab for the whole next year, until you send it on to the next winner.

Columns on SDLMAME, 64 bit, on my TV with an XBpx controller (it's all I have ATM).  I play one game at a time but stack it with credits so I don't have to lean over to the keyboard on the floor as much :)

Why was there a change from rewarding 1st place winner with creating new competition with a choice of their game to 3rd place winner? What was the reasoning there? And no one objects to it?

I think it was to combat the winner choosing another game they're good at, chaining games they have a higher chance of winning the comp with.
I think it's a fine balancing rule.

:dunno

How about I move your post here to this thread?

Pretty sure it would land in the second position for your editing pleasure.

Thanks PL1, I fixed it by adding that 1-99 link myself to the top post in this thread.  Buys me another 2 years of space :)

Omg, only after looking at this thread (and the pictures) again I see it says 'BOYAC'. I didn't notice it until just now! :banghead:  :laugh2:

More apologies for lat(m)eness, but here I present to you the Bronze Joystick, newly engraved with the winner of the 2016 BYOAC High Score Competition, yamatetsu.

Also, the typo from last year was fixed.

Congratulations to yam!  :applaud:

Since popsicle refuses to let go of the trophy (just kidding, it's just to expensive to ship the thing across the globe), I can't properly display it on my cab. So I did the next best thing. Popsicle kindly sent me hi res versions of the pics, I took one, cut out the joystick and gave it a new background that I found via google.
