Star Fighter Restore
« on: August 18, 2011, 08:56:17 am »
New guy here, doing my first restore.

I am in the (long) process of restoring an original Star Fighter cabinet.  Not sure why I chose to restore it, because it is going to be impossible to find repo artwork, but anyway...

I am having video issues and I have isolated the problem.  It is a broken cap on the game board.  I am having trouble identifying the cap info/type and part number and was wondering if anyone here could help.  The cap has "47nM" printed on it.

Here is a pic of the game board and the broken cap.  On the picture of the entire board it is the fourth cap up on the right side...

Here is a pic of the cabinet for those who are curious...

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Thanks!

Yeah, I am from San Antonio.  I guess I did get a decent deal on the machine then, I only paid $80 for it!

Considering that's just a trace going from that capacitor to ground, you could probably do a jumper wire from that broken leg to the same leg on another similar capacitor along that row (temporarily).

How have you verified this is the problem?

I will try that when I get home this afternoon.  Thanks for the tip!

I cannot believe the guy wanted to sell this for $300.  I thought paying $80 was a little much...

Looks like it is not the cap.  I been checking the socketed chips by removing them one at a time and then turning on the machine to see if they make a difference in the graphics. So far all the chips changed the screen except for a group,of five chips at the bottom row of the board.  All five ofthem are labled "6530j"  i suspect these chips may be the issue...

I thought it was just an H-hold problem as well so the first thing I did was adjust all the pots on the monitor.  Here is the image I got after adjusting...

Never mind the flagging on the right, it can be fix I just adjusted too far while playing with it again.

Also here is a gameplay video of what I see after all the adjustments...

I am not sure what the problem is anymore.  I am seriously considering turning this into a MAME cabinet...

Be sure you clean all the chip legs on those socketed chips if they look like they need it.  I lightly scuff them with sandpaper, myself.

If I recall correctly, that board is more or less a Galaxian bootleg, so you might have some luck searching for repair information on that.

If you're going to MAME it, I'd suggest getting a 48 in 1 or something similar.  That cabinet will not lend itself well to horizontal games.  I've got some extra trackballs laying around if you want one and you're ever in the medical center.

Thanks for all your help.  I have decided to MAME it.  It is not worth the effort to get the original game to work...

That is a video ram addressing problem on the board. Nothing to do with the monitor.

What did you do with the original PCB and marquee?

Sitting in my garage.  The original marquee is cracked and was being held together with clear packing tape...
