Bomber Man (Japan)

----------------------------------------------------

ROMSet: bombrman

----------------------------------------------------

Default Settings:
Lives : 3
Difficulty : Medium
Select Game Mode : Normal 1P PLAY

----------------------------------------------------

I'm picking this game because my son (nickelstringer) wants to compete.
Make sure you select the Normal 1P PLAY instead of 1P vs 3 comps.

----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only!

- No continues or adding credits!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Tuesday August 23 (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2011.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.

- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

Best of luck!-

Awesome, I actually fired this up the other day to see how it worked.  Great choice, I'm excited to figure this one out too.

So what's an average score for this game?  I got a lot of improvement to go but I'm getting better.

My best so far is 19,300.  I keep making bonehead mistakes and walking back into my bomb blasts.

Stike that:  22,000 so far.  Gonna try to get higher before posting.

Doesn't seem like there is much going on in this competition thread so I'll start with a score of 24,600.

Pic below as well as a vid I did for fun.  Come on people let's get more posts in this competition thread.  I like this game.

I didn't see much Japanese there, but it's a good question, what's behind picking jap rom, and not the world or us?

Not yet. I'm waiting for the fan base to come in. In the mean time, I'll up the ante some. Third in the list was my first game: surgical and swift on the first round, then failed epicly on the second. My second game was better.

Updated my last post with the link to the video.  It's a terrible example of a game play video.  But I said I would so here it is.

ahh, reason good enough for me.

Maybe try looking for dynablaster, that's parent game and then see if the jap rom is there. I use 0.141 and 0.143 romset and it's there.

Btw 20600 after few tries. Don't have much time to play :(

Sorry for my inactivity.  I was at the point in my cab's construction where I could get it functional if I just put in a good week's worth of work.  Definitely worth it.  I have come back to figit around with this game though, pretty fun.

I played around a bit and noticed pretty quickly the way to get the most points per level is to blow up all enemies at the same time to get the multiplier.  Getting the highest multiplier is actually a pretty big deal in terms of point difference.  And when enemies are spread out you can still get that multiplier with the bombs you have to manually explode.

I've gotten really good at the first 3 stages so I'll post my quick strategy on each of those.  Next stages will come later when I figure them out.

1:  Pretty easy.  Grab all the powerups on your starting side then blast your way to the other side without killing any of the enemies.  Take the powerups over there then you should be able to easily set a bomb in the enemy alley with enough blast range to get them all at once.  I have 2100pts after stage 1.

2:  A little more tricky, need to figure out the layout.  There are 4 range upgrades and a manual detonation upgrade that can all be obtained without opening any paths to enemies, grab them first.  Next, there are two bomb capacity upgrades in the bottom left.  Get those two as the enemy is walking away from you then quickly dart to the top right to blast out the bomb located up there and grab it.  Now you should be able to drop 4 manual detonation bombs.  Now, try your best to not attract the enemies out of there path in each corner, you want to isolate them.  Block each of the enemies in their respective 4 corners with bombs then move to a safe place and quickly blow them all at the same time.  I usually have 12600pts after this stage.  However, if you get lucky you can trap them in a way where the higher point enemies get the highest multiplier.  Most I got after this stage is 13300.

3:  You can blast away a lot of blocks without opening any paths to enemies, do so now to get the upgrades.  There will be lots of bomb range and capacity upgrades and at least one (maybe two?) manual detonation upgrades.  Now is a tricky part, refer to 0002.png attachment for placement.  Place each bomb in the location specified in that specific order.  There are two match icons (one in top left area and other in bottom right area) that give 5000pts each.  Obviously we need to get those.  The exact moment the enemies start to hide, blast each bomb in series, NOT all at once, you want bomb 1 and 2 to clear a path first so bomb 3 and 4 can follow up and blast the two blocks that have the 5000pt matches.  Immediately pick up these matches while the enemies are hidden.  Also, as you're grabbing them, begin placing bombs in spots that will blast one or two enemies when they resurface.  With a little practice you should be able to quickly detonate all bombs at once and kill all enemies.  Most points I had after stage 3 was 31700.

Then I just kinda freestyled to get the rest of my points.  Once I get a good handle on the later stages I'll update if requested.  Hope this helps!

0003.png attachment is my highest score so far.

DJM has doubled my score.  Now I need to start playing again and catch up with him.  I did figure out the first level for 2100 points if you look at my video above.  If I can just keep from walking back into my bombs explosive path.

Heh, I do that too...I also forget and detonate my own bombs when they're next to the enemy, but I haven't gotten out of the way yet. I've been getting the 2100 points on level 1 too. I think that's the max, unless there's one of those 5000pt matches hidden somewhere I haven't found yet.

I've been thinking about something. Can a winner start a thread for a game that's already been selected? There's been some really nice choices earlier, would be fun to revisit them if people here think it's OK.

I vote for no.  I find these competitions to be an exercise in exploring new games & playing games about which others are passionate, games that I might not know or tend to play.

My $0.02.

Thanks,
-Jason

I agree with Jason. There was a thread by Epyx that let us beat the scores from these competitions. I think he got too busy to keep it updated though. I would like to see a BYOAC high score board that included all these competitions and any other games. If there is interest, I have the time to keep it updated.

I'm all for a high score board.  There are some pretty good games I missed out on because I joined BYOAC later.

Update:

I managed to beat my previous score, though I stopped being so planned after stage 4 because stuff starts getting too complicated.  There are good pockets of points in 1-6 and 2-1 though.  The boss in 1-6 gets you 10k I believe, and there's a soda can icon in 2-1 that nets a cool 30k.

Good score DJM.

I would be up for either the high score board or revisiting games.  Like stated there are some I missed out on because I joined late and would like to at least try beating some previous scores.

This game is so simple to play there is almost no strategy to it and yet out of greed I guess I make the dumbest mistakes, or I'll panick and blow myself up. Please don't strap any bombs to my chest or I'll definitely screw up!

As to the revisiting previous competition I was thinking that if saint would sticky epyx's all time hi-score competition
That probably would solve replaying previous games. Epyx's thread or maybe whoever is willing to maintain it could copy that thread?

No one else was able to get past the 1st boss?  Just doing that should get you to ~30-40k total, above the 2nd place point total.  Y'all must've been busy during this one.

EDIT: Oops!  Sorry!  Thought it ended Monday, not today!   :lol
Carry on.  Get some points!

There's a boss? I haven't gotten far enough to see him yet I guess ;) I haven't passed the 4th or 5th board yet...

I can get to the first boss but die pretty quickly once his spawn or whatever you will call them appear.  So maybe 5 seconds into the round.

I have pretty good luck skirting around the outsides and mainly just picking up the speed upgrades first.  By the time you make your first pass and pick them all up he should pull all his minions in tight so you can quickly outmaneuver him and pick up the rest of the upgrades.  Then bring the pain as you lay down bombs in quick little lines.

I agree with Jason. There was a thread by Epyx that let us beat the scores from these competitions. I think he got too busy to keep it updated though. I would like to see a BYOAC high score board that included all these competitions and any other games. If there is interest, I have the time to keep it updated.

Yes, everyone feel free to visit/re-visit any previous comp's game. If Epyx is no longer available, one of the mods can get access to it.

I created a high game scoreboard. It was more work than I expected, digging through all those threads finding the scores. I will keep the scoreboard updated.

If no one comes in with a higher score in the last few hours, congrats to djm858. My son never got a good score, he was busy still playing Super Puzzle Fighter. He's gotten better than me now, beating me when we play head to head 60% of the time.

Bomberman is my favorite party game--in grad school, I used to have 4 friends over all the time for 5-player Bomberman on the TurgoGrafx system.  So much fun.

I couldn't get into the 1-player adventure mode in this arcade version...

Thanks,
-Jason
