Sometimes I run older versions of MAME with software scanlines, and to do that without artifacting, the scale factor is such that the image doesn't fill the screen. I find I quickly forget about it, especially deep in a game. My monitor is a 27" CRT, though. Regardless, if I were going LCD, I wouldn't go below 32"
