Do we want them to know?

I can wrap a rubber band around a drill and go kill someone, and the smart meter is my alibi? They can see how many watts my electric tooth brush pulls? Who the hell has a corded toothbrush? Sounds dangerous. :dizzy:
I'm all about privacy, and my right to it.I just cant understand why this is a big deal. My electric company uses smart meters, they provide us with power usage statistics like when we use the most power and how to better conserve energy.

Yeah, he is being overdramatic. A lot more private statistics are given off by your cell phone. There is a matter of principal to it though. We have no choice in our power company, and it's yet another chip of our private lives out there for grabs, but I'm more worried about the green police than the real police in this case. ;D
I already get my monthly lecture letter telling me that I am using too much electricity because I am above the neighborhood average (even though my neighborhood is littered with foreclosures and they don't ever take that into account).

No more dials... it's all digital. ;D
But I know what you mean, we check it from time to time now, more so to make sure it matches the usage on the bill. Before the new meters we use to get an "estimated" bill every now and again and that would piss me off. Of course they would adjust it the next time they actually read the meter, but it can still spank ya from one month to the next.
I have one of those Kill A Watt meters for checking all the small appliances and whatnot, but it does no good for anything 220v. (ie furnace, stove, water well pump, air conditioner etc)
But I have been known to shut the entire house down and turn each of those on one at a time and use the electric meter to monitor usage.

except then your usage goes to zero for a short time... and the company thinks you pulled the meter to do some shenanigans inside to get free power and people show up at your house.
i was in the middle of replacing our all our old outlets and light switches to new ones... to keep from killing myself and playing guess the circuit with the breaker box, I hit the main breaker and shut off the while place. a couple of hours later, i'm almost done and i get a knock at the door. dude in blue overalls doesn't say hey i'm from the power company or nothin', he says "why's your power off?" im totally thrown off. i should have been WTF it to ya.

Well, long story short, don't give any form of gov't even an inch when it comes to your private information. When they need to, they will take a mile.

You have to admit, alot of those circumstances you talked about would seem a bit suspicious to someone from the outside. But it is a bit shameful that they came in with the "guilty" mentality from the outset.
Oh, and careful Tom Brokaw! They might know when you were at work, too! (And so does anyone else with a television!)

Well, the only thing I can understand them questioning is the the tenant sign, but investigating me for tax fraud over it was outrageous. They could have just asked. Yeah, the rest is shameful.
Investigating my electric bill size, which I only submitted as a proof of residency? Accusing me of harboring illegal immigrants because I have a guest bedroom and a broken mailbox on the floor of my junk-filled porch? Suggesting that I am building without a permit because I have a medium-sized tool collection? I just can't wrap my mind around those.
Oh, and in a later occasion, I received a nastygram from the city because I had six patio pavers on my driveway. I was going to put down some pavers to put my grill on. The notice from the city was because they suspected me of illegally building a parking space in my yard without proper zoning approval. I guess they suspected I needed a parking spot for a clown car from the 2' x 3' spot I was building.
In the end, they sent out an inspector to make sure the pavers were under my grill like I told them. Maybe they are the ones who violated my grill? It all makes sense now! This was all a gov't conspiracy all along! :o Where's the lone gunmen when you need them?
