Scratch Slim Marvel vs Capcom [14 Nov - Finished]
« on: June 28, 2011, 10:04:09 am »
Why?

Why did i sell my old cab?

I miss throwing coins in her , that sound is priceless.  But she had flaws, i didn't like the u360 and her size was just to big.
It needs to be living room proof! And i miss HD gfx games and remakes of old games. the TV didn't cut it.
Replacing it with a LCD would kill her. So she is happy at a new owner now.

After almost 3 years i decided i want a new one. Slim sized, Arcade feel, LCD screen.

LCD with the scan line modes in Mame + tinted plexi and a few beers would fool me anyway  ;)

My holiday is coming and i have some time to spend on it.

I got some sketches on paper, already drew it out in sketch-up and got most of the artwork ideas and design going.

My new one will be similar to my old one, just half its dept. This time no Street Fighter Arcade theme.

But going for the Marvel vs Capcom theme. Based on the latest version 3 characters

Some basic info
Screen : LG 32" 32LD320
Sound : 5.1 Cambridge DTT3500 Digital Black Logitech Z-2300
System : Playstation 3 Slim with large hdd Custom firmware 3.55 Jtagged Xbox 360
Storage : 2 TB Samsung hdd 5400 RPM SATA 32MB
Sticks : 2 x Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT

I have been buying parts and indexing my old parts, materials and tools.
Found a place where i could work , my balcony is a no go this time..

Just my heads up

Got some sheets of 18mm mdf for starters ;)

And got my sticks for the ps3, they also work on pc and ps2 , i used them before, and no lag in the pcb.
Also it has some extra features i could use like, analog to digital stick and turbo functions

The stick

I will only use the pcb from the sticks

Pcb from the stick

The soldering could be better on some points, ill touch them up.

The analog to digital button is kinda complex, i hoped for easy replacement.
It has 18 soldering points, gonna probe them to see what they do.

Underside of the pcb for the digital->analog button

Top side

Thnx, but i will try and make something myself.

total width cab : 84cm
total dept cab : 56cm
total height cab : 187cm

Question : What angle degree do monitors/lcd go? I have it about 15-20 degree now, i tried this setup at a table with control heights and its good

not digging the round edge. angle generally look better imo. change your design. sideart looks good but you wanna consider a different background. you already made a "yellow-ish" cabinet before.

Nope, yellow lovely round curves , standup cab it will be ;)

Sketch-up isn't really giving me the shape i want, just wait until woodworking commences

As for the art, ill try and get the best out of it.

Note the mismatched colored balltop  :banghead:

And i started drawing on the mdf

first i drew on math paper, then on sketch-up, and then put it on the mdf

Now i am gonna test the setup and look at the screen angle to see what i like.

tested the screen and its great for its price, very happy with it.
Nice thing is that when i put on the main power switch of the cab the TV goes on and on hdmi video input, that is one less concern!

Game attract mode working

testfitted angle and height of screen

and cp height

All powerd by this beauty

I am happy now with the decision of the shape, and LCD placement angle and height.

I can start woodworking

I really like that you've chosen a console instead of a computer. So much faster/better IMHO. How do you like the JLF's?

Yep, ps3 boots in 2 seconds, the tv turns itself on and setsitself on hdmi , so that part will be easy.
havent tried the JLF yet, but they feel good, still dubbing on going bal or bat top

Yes mame and other emulators run like a charm on the ps3, and some nice PSN games are available. And mvc3 on the ps3 itself

Still testing the speakers wondering for a 5.1 setup somehow or just put front left  + front rear together on one side and same for right. and maybe put the center in the middle..

Or i could do, in the speaker panel, front left, center , front right
and below the screen, rear left, rear right.

I got the speakers for almost nothing, thats why the strange 5.1 , otherwise i would buy a 2.1

The sound is pretty decent for this old audio system. and for 5.1 ps3 and psn games i could make things interesting.

Yeah its great  :applaud:

i decided for the speakers now. 5.1 setup doesn't add much value, this set cant output stereo to all 5 channels.

And with this decision i can keep the LCD in its case, its brand new so keeping it as it is is great for warranty issues.

Got started on the coinbox, it took 0,25$ at first but now 0,50 euro :)
To do this just Fidel with all the screws a bit and at some point you get the idea and it drops correctly.

And i added 2 microswitches to the push to eject buttons, these will reprecent the select button of the ps3 controller

PUSH TO SELECT

My laminate also came in, its high pressure laminate with mat nero black effect 0,9 mm thick.
Comes with protective plastic , ordered at www.klushandel.nl

Time for my woodworking

Here's my new spot to build this thing, not a balcony like lasttime but a almost empty garage

Finalised my drawing and it was time for my saw..

First cutting with my electric handsaw

Then using a router and some straight pieces of wood to get the lines smooth.

Remember, buy a lot of clamps, they are your best friend  :D

First side done

Place it on top of the otherside piece of mdf and follow the lines

Rough cut it

Then flush router it !

Snow time

Twin sides as a result for today

SNAAKE forced me

Just kidding, after looking at sketchup some more, and influence of girlfriend and friends i decided for a angled version.

i tried a slim version from my old cab. but that didnt look right.

So i thought , lets try angled then. But i looked closely at many slim cabs i didnt like. And corrected what i "hated" about them for myself.

Today i made the t-molding slot.

First try the router at some scrap wood, to get the slot just right

18 mm mdf, + 0,09 mm laminate + 19 mm t-molding = flush

There we go

All done  :D

Then i made a third sidepanel as a template to router out space in the inside laminate as Woodshop Flunky did on his American Ace cabinet.

Time to laminate the inside panels, track the sides with a pencil

Using contact adhesive, and a rubber roller used for wallpaper

Glue both sided and apply mdf

Put something heavy on top

Remove the excessive laminate with a router and a flush bit

All done for today, protective plastic still applied

Interesting.  I've never seen laminate applied quite like that.   Did you cut the laminate to size before you used the flush trim bit?

Interesting.  I've never seen laminate applied quite like that.   Did you cut the laminate to size before you used the flush trim bit?

First applied glue to both sides mdf and the laminate, then placed them on top.

then while its drying i cut it with a knife in the middle and then flush router it.

Today a lot of hard work and little progres..

i made the template for the laminate, measured a lot of times for the pine holders

Then router out the space on the inside laminated parts

It was really hard because i didnt have the correct bit, mine was to long for 18mm mdf template..

that routing was a pain, its dept for the pine wood was more then just laminate, also 2mm mfd, so dust everywhere.
my bit was to long to just scrap off the laminate..

I am still itchy

Thanks, it wont have a CRT ;)

If you want i scanned my basic drawing and measurements of my old cab. Its on math paper and in cm. its not much but could give you a hand for building it. Ill keep an eye out  8)

With my old cab being so loved its hard to top or equal it again. This cab will be made by rules i wanted.

That main rule was the size, we have 1 spot on our average apartment, and i made the size of the cab to fit that spot. Even the LCD size was bought depending on that spot. Then i drew a cab around the spot and LCD.

Other rule is detail, try to build is as nice as i can with the tools i have.

I cant work on it for 2 days, because my father got ill yesterday and had to go to the hospital by ambulance. Hes ok now but i have to fill in for our company coming days, employees are on holiday..  :'(

OK, i found some time this morning. My dad is doing OK, he should be back before the weekend.
Today i placed the pine wood on both sides. I did the placing by making a template for how much space i want of the sided for the mdf.
Then placed a piece of mdf in between and lastly the pine.

Don't forget to route out more laminate then the exact pine space, you never know if you need a fraction more space.

Route out more space then needed.

Cutting pine pieces...

MDF template for space and a piece of mdf and followed by the pine.

Then glue and screw them to the sides.
Important, i didnt glue the important pieces like the LCD holder, speaker panel and 1 side of the ps3 shelf.
Ill glue them when i have the cab standing and make the final measurements for those.

At the bottom you see a high up (11cm from bottom) piece of pine, its for a special wheel construction i made up.

Final pic for today as a result. I am really tired of prepairing the sided  ;D

Wanted to get some work done today, problem i am building this thing in a garage and i am depended of people wanting me to lend power from them. And this is frustrating.

So i made up my mind and moved everything back home. Ill build it in a tiny storage and outside combination to get it done.

I did get somethings done, i got the panels cut

And cutted laminate pieces for them

Prepaired the lcd panel holes for the vesa mount and coinbox got drawn out to cut.

The speaker system is a 5.1 and i want all 5 speakers on the speaker panel.

center is a much more watt speaker then the satalites (20watt to 7watt)

i still undecided how to place them

or 2 satalites together, then the center in the middle and the another 2 satalites

or all 5 in a row

After reading a couple of reviews about the dtt3500 and i looked at the pcb complexity, i decide ill just go for the z-2300 like my old cab, its great.

It barrely fits though

Finaly a update worth mentioning.

I have been able to get the cab standing today  :applaud:

After i montaged the front coin box panel i added the volume control panel, it needed a trim , so i placed a mdf plate and made it flush with a router.

Flush

here some pics of the cab standing.

Thats it for today.

So, any chance of this falling over? It's very slim. Looking forward to more updates.

Till now it feels really solid, and the subwoofer and lcd will make it even more heavy. Lastly its against a wall.

Today not a picture flood, but i got many panels laminated and trimmed. Nice thing of laminate is it hides mdf mistakes easily and hides any gap.
This is a little time consuming , placing it back and forth before the trim, but in the end you get a nice flush cab on all the angles on the panels.

Tomorrow ill fit the lcd and finish the top and speaker panel placement.

Oh and the coin door got mounted ;)
