Recieved a new volume pot for the creative speaker set, i bought the set second hand and the main pot could turn and turn, and some volume balance problems. Gonna replace it this weekend.

Drilling template, i went with the generic version of the Vewlix shifted layout. Got it from http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/layout.html
Why did i choose this design, well i placed my fingers on the cabinet and printed some layouts, this one felt best for my use.

Ready for drilling

I have to note, i bought the Sanwa JLF sticks from arcadeshop.de and used their mounting plate details http://www.arcadeshop.de/images/specs/arcade-jlftp8yt-mounting.gif

Its not correct

The size is correct

but the drilling holes arent

Just have to make sure i dont make a mistake here.

Thnx, ill post some artwork pictures when i got some good pictures.

I added m5 bolts to the joystick plates and made them flush

And started drilling the cp

Placed the cab on its side and cleaned with amonia and then apply the artwork

I also replaced the old volume pot with the new one, its perfect. audio is ballanced 100% at low volume and i can now finaly mute it.

Pretty happy with that, pretty happy  :applaud:

Not much of an update but i wanted faster dedicated network connection on my cab , plus the xbox has xlink for online play and i needed  faster ftp transfer.

Got a cheap chrome utp connector

Painted it black

And installed it on the backside near the power socket

Started to work on the Madcats fightpad pcb. I removed the cable and added a pin socket to the board

And added a female connector to the madcats usb cable

Cute

I worked on my control panel some more  :D

I never thought i would have had so little space for all the buttons joysticks & pcb on the panel. I had to move stuff around a lot to get it to fit.
In the end i got it right.  :applaud:

First i had to cut the little pcb pets up once more  :-[
With the pcb moved all the way to to top it could fit just right.

Mounted the JLF plates

laminated both sides and opened the holes up

The nicest way was to place the lpt socket like this

But then the cp wont fit anymore plus i couldn't get the lpt connector in the socket
WONT FIT :(

So i had to move the lpt more around. I centered it vertical. That way it would fit and i could get the lpt cable in.
And i started wiring

Pcb soldering

Result  :applaud:

High praise indeed from the Czar of Crimp City!

+1 from me - I've never seen controller hacks handled so well.  those JLW's with the header connection make for such a nice clean setup.

Amazing!

I'm rewiring my cp as we speak! Two questions,

Did you solder directly onto the micro switch terminals? (rather than crimps)

and did you bend the JLF pins 90º? if so that's a great idea as they can be quite awkward to get at flat.

Yes soldered every connection. I am a soldering freak  and yes bended the JLF 90 degree, i used a dremmel and a bit like this

and dremmeled the top white plastic of untill the coper pins started showing, and i took a plier and bend all the pins up in one move

Today a lot of hard work and little progres..

i made the template for the laminate, measured a lot of times for the pine holders

Then router out the space on the inside laminated parts

It was really hard because i didnt have the correct bit, mine was to long for 18mm mdf template..

I debating doing something similar to what you did to route out the inside laminate.  I'm just having a little trouble visualizing exactly what I need to do.  What type of bit did you use?

I'm thinking I need something like this -

Yes thats the correct bit, you dont really need to make the template perfect, make the gaps a bit wider so you have some working space.

Or just dump the whole idea of removing the laminate, and just glue pine holders with screw from outside to inside (and inside to outside if you want), if you gonna laminate the outside it wont show a mark..

Thanks for the confirmation.  I may go with with your second recommendation since I will be laminating the outside.

Thanks for the confirmation.  I may go with with your second recommendation since I will be laminating the outside.

I removed the laminate from my build with a router.  However, I didn't use a bit with a bearing.  Instead I used router bushings... http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=10671  Using these, I was able to adjust a straight bit to take just a little more material than the thickness of the laminate.  It seemed pricey, but it's nice to have if you do any other woodworking.

I also agree that you would be fine (strength wise) by gluing, and screwing the battens from the outside.  Aside from strength, one of the other advantages to removing the laminate on my build was that doing so gave me identical reference edges on each side panel.  This came in VERY handy when mounting my monitor and CP.

Complete mini arcade cabinet plans available.

Not having space in my own house to place a cab, it's always fun living through the exploits of others in their cab builds.  :)  Your SF cab was beautiful, and this one appears to be coming along nicely as well.

Not sure if the builds for the 360 include it, or if the 360 is able to handle it, but have you checked out the HLSL function of MAME?  I didn't think my 4 year old laptop would be able to handle this supposedly power intensive feature of MAME, but was surprised to find out that it can indeed handle it, and the results are incredible.  It VERY accurately recreates the scanlines, bleedover, curvature, etc. of old school CRT monitors on an LCD screen.  I have connected my laptop up to my 42" LCD HDTV using S-Video and when running MAME using the HLSL feature in it, my jaw just dropped.  Hence why I have recently started compiling ideas for a second arcade joystick.  (Can't build a cabinet, but can build a joystick using the control panel parts from my halted cab-build).  Just currently delayed by a broken right medial maleolus in my ankle that has me on crutches and a walking boot.  Until that heals, and until I'm off of the pain killing medication, I can't be working with power tools or even going around Home Depot to pick up the MDF I need.

Anyway, cab is looking great and if you can get a build of MAME to run on the 360 that handles the HLSL feature, give it a try.  It's stunning.

It's looking amazing. The artwork and overall look looks way better than any factory produced arcade cabinet (wood) that I've seen. The JLF's looks like they aren't properly mounted though.

The shafts are about 1-2 cm taller (from plexi surface to balltop) than they're supposed to be. Hard to say exactly from your pics.

Some proper height examples:

Lookin' fresh!  :applaud:
I do agree that the joys look a bit too high. Take a look at any of the candy cabinets, or Vewlix control panels. You'll notice Emph's height example is the same. There should be enough space for two fingers right under the balltop, while holding it with your thumb, index, and middle fingers in a comfortable rest position while the side of your hand is resting on the CP surface (that is, without straining upwards to hold the balltop).

It might be too late to change it, but if you're happy with it, then all-the-power-to-ya. Maybe you have big paws though...  ;)

Yes, it's all about the comfort really. For longer sessions, I think this can actually do damage to your wrists.
