My current job was advertised with a pay scale. They made an offer £1000 under the scale (it was an internal move). They said that to justify a pay rise from my current wage to the new scale, the board of directors would need to be consulted, and we don't want to do that do we?
I replied, yes, I'm confident that I can justify the pay rise to the directors and am happy to meet them. 5 minutes later, a job offer and a pay rise midway in the new scale.
Why must everyone try and screw you :banghead:

Heh. My first job review out of college I was told "I don't want to give you a raise because people your age spend the money on stuff like partying and motorcycles. I don't want to put you in that position."
Like jim, speechless. I had a new wife and baby to support and two sets of student loans to pay off. Thankfully that was a couple years before the dot com crash so I left the company a few months later for a decent bump in salary.

The worst part is when they ask you to take off your shirt and lay down

A lawyer friend of mine went out to lunch with a couple of prospective partners. They sat down, ate, talked about everything, she thought the "interview" went extremely well and that she nailed it. Turns out they didnt hire her because she put salt on her food before she tasted it, and they thought that she judged things before taking things into consideration, despite the fact that they thought she was awesome, and that she gave stellar answers to her questions, and just a pleasant person. ::)
