Ebay Stupidity (humor?)

You can only write off fair market value, not what TJ Max said the retail price originally was when you were trolling the clearance bin. Fair market value on a semen and beer stained couch isn't $650, either.

Not a bag, several bags. Going by the values given in the ItsDeductible app from Intuit. Now of course they could be wrong but a full trash bag of clothes in resaleable condition had more value than I thought before I plugged them into that. Four trash bags full of $3-5 items adds up fast.

--- Quote from: Bootay on June 06, 2011, 05:58:42 pm ---I posted a DVD Player in the free section of Craigslist, some lady came and picked it up. 4 hours later she is knocking at my door. I answer and she says "I need the remote. You didn't give me the remote." I said "Go buy a universal one" she said "I did and I still cannot get the 5.1 speakers working without the remote that came with it." I told her I didn't know where the remote was.
2 weeks later, there's a knock at the door. Same lady. "Did you find the remote yet? I really need it." so I told her "Look. the DVD Player was free. You can give it back if you want. Or you can hop on ebay and look for the proper remote." She says "I already spent money on a universal remote and now I have to pay for another remote?" I finally had to tell her. "Deal with it. The item was free. It is no longer my problem."

So did you find that remote, or not?
--- Quote from: Bootay on June 07, 2011, 11:29:35 am ---I once bought a Mac off of CL and when I showed up at their house to pick it up, the guy wouldn't let me go. He kept talking and talking, all the while his wife was in the kitchen cooking. I finally tell the guy I have to leave and his wife comes in the front room and says "Would you like to stay for dinner? We are having fish." to which the husband says "Yes. Please stay for dinner." I said "uhhh no I am good. I have to go." It was very kind of them to offer....but still strange to me.

I would've told 'em I don't like seafood. Which for me is the truth.
And maybe you WERE the dinner.

If you had it on hand, I wonder if he'd have asked for something else as a backup plan. He's obviously done this before, because he chose something that he figured would take you at least a few minutes to grab.

Ridiculous.

No way. Why would you even bother posting an add, talking with strangers, setting up times for them to come over for free? I really can’t even compute that. Sure I would give something I no longer wanted to friend or family but that’s it.

--- End quote ---
I wholey endorse Good Will. It is a fantastic program and anything you give them helps. Not only is it a place for people to get items at a low price, but they generally hire and train people that are disabled, or have other social/criminal issues that would normally prevent them from having a job. We generally donate large bags of clothes/electronics/ect a couple of times a year. Every Good Will in the nation has a rear drop-off. Pull your car up, press the buzzer, somebody comes out to take the stuff out for you. So yeah, it is by far the easiest way to get rid of things you don't want or don't need anymore.
You can get a receipt if you must but in all honesty, if you are using it as a tax deduction you aren't really giving and expecting nothing in return and thus it's not charity and you should be ashamed of yourself. :P

You are expecting nothing in return from the recipient. Taking advantage of the gov't incentive is not the same as expecting something from Goodwill.
