Galaga cocktail mode graphics glitch
« on: January 12, 2011, 03:18:50 pm »
Haven't had much luck in my search for a solution, so I thought I'd post to see if anyone else had run into this issue... On my cocktail mame cab, I set the dip switch in Galaga for cabinet type to cocktail. When I play a two player game, the display flips around to the P2 side like it's supposed to. However, the score display that's supposed to be at the top of the screen (the two lines of text with 1UP, HIGH SCORE, etc., with the scores under them) is displayed about halfway down the screen. The game still plays normally, but having the score display down there in the middle of the action is distracting. Once it flips back over to the P1 side, the score display is back up at the top where it's supposed to be.

Anyone else seen this?

yeah, must be a newish bug.  I've had galaga running on my cocktail machine for a few years and it's perfect for P1 and P2.
not sure what rev I'm using, but it's at least 2 if not 3 years old.

I'm using mame .136 with whatever the last u update was for that build (u4 I think?) and the matching romset.

I've tried the other variations of the Galaga rom, but the only one which seems to do the screen flipping is "Galaga (Namco rev. B)". Screen flipping works in that one, but I have this weird score display problem.

Looks like it's a known bug that appears in .132 and later versions.

Yup, that's what I'm seeing. Thanks.

So I guess I'll need to get a pre-.132 version to run for these games.

waaaa  :hissy:

I just discovered this problem too.  And I was making so much headway with cfg magician and setting mala to 'rotate mame to follow mala'!

Now you're telling me I need to learn how to run multiple versions of mame within Mala to get Galaga, the cornerstone of all cocktails, to run properly?!? waaaa

Any other way out of this? Or does Mala handle multiple versions of mame ok?

To be honest, I haven't gotten around to fixing this yet. But I do know it's possible to set up a batch file to have mala launch a different version of mame for certain roms. You should be able to find details in the mala section of the forum.

I have the same issue, and I hope that a fix gets under way, I use Hyperspin, and mame 142....... I hate that I can't play galaga....... Hey it also does it on dig dug as well........ hate to make you more sad...... so far those are the only ones affected bu this issue, that I have seen..........I think I will report it as bug to the mame dev.... maybe they can fix it......... Funny thing is they both work on older mame versions, and they are both classic Namco games.......sometimes newer aint always better........ hey is there any way I can make hyperspin launch old crappy mame for those two games? just a thought.......My wife loves dig dug ya see........

It was originally reported 2009-06-17 05:06 so don't hold your breath for a fix.   Maybe use a working version of MAME to run the games that your wife loves.

well the problem is , that it is not just a little glitch, my cocktail, is just that a cocktail.... not some vert cab, I am not trying to be a smartass here.... just stating that this glitch is NOT limited to galaga , and dig dug....... as I was going through my games and setting them up..... And I found A ton of these ,(ALL NAMCO) like super pac-man pac-man jr.... and boscarian..... well almost all namco games pre 87... with execption of regualr pac-man and mrs pac-man....... so this is a huge bug, and maybe they need to be reminded..... Again....... cause over 25 games that used to work, and now don't , , just ain't right.... So my option is to use old mame and lose over 300 hundred newer games...... yeah right..........  they need to realize that it is not just some "tiny bug that affects 2 games........." I mean maybe super pac-man aint a must, but all the other titles that force you to play them as one player titles........ and besides the only stupid options , are the ones never tried.........

You do not have to lose games if you use an older mame.  Just chose a front end that will allow use of 2 or more versions of mame and use the older version with only the games that have a problem.  :D :D

I'm in a similar situation atm and the problems with the above suggestion are:

getting the correct roms/samples

setting up the compile environment (it has changed many times) to change to code to allow saving highscores and remove nagscreens!

I think I have my compile environment sorted along with the source for 0.94 (had the old roms/samples backed up) and am now fighting to get the compiler to work...

Clrmamepro can be used to get the correct rom set for an older version of mame.  The older classics did not change that much if you have an older set to work from.
