Other names suggestions:

* Project: GRC
* GRC Arcade
* Pongcade
As a funny note, GRC means "Gendarmerie royale du Canada" in Québec.  ;D

I think you may have ispired a whole brew of "rat cabs."  i am thinking a cab with a c.p. made of old licence plates, a mosiac of scrap wood glued together just make a side pannel and not a lick of actul arcade technology to be found.  8)

This is very cool.  Nice job.

What a great idea!! This is the reverse of most cabs and projects that you see. Instead of planning for weeks/months/years you just dove in and started building. There is something cool about it being built from a Ping Pong table too. Keep up the awesome work. Hopefully this will inspire others to just dig and and build something awesome. Great job!!  :applaud:

Yesterday

Only had a couple free hours yesterday and spent half that at the hardware and auto parts stores browsing paint & parts.
Ended up picking up a 12" piano hinge and some spring roller latches to mount the control panel.
I was hoping they'd have 16" hinges (the width of the CP), but the next size up was 18" and I didn't want to bother with cutting it.
Here are what the spring roller latches look like.

I figure this way I can flip the CP open for easy assembly. I will probably reinforce it with some 2x4's before handing it over to the 6yo though.

This is a light from a gauntlet legends showcase CP that I wanted to use for the marquee, but 3 out of the 4 bulbs were burnt out, so I bought replacements at the auto parts store.  I probably could have just bought a cheap light for what the two packs of bulbs cost me, but I'm trying to put the stuff I have to use instead of throwing it away.  It already has stand-offs and will run off the PC power supply.

After the shopping was done, I painted the inside of the light box white and gave it a quick first coat of bedliner.
 I would have left it ping pong blue if I'd had the right t-molding, but since I didn't and had all the exposed edges, I decided just to paint it black.  It's a galaga cab anyways.  That's all I had time for. I didn't post yesterday because I didn't see much point in showing a splotchy cab, but oh well.
Here it is as of the end of day Monday.

Today

I didn't really have any time to work on it today because I had to mow the lawn and it takes all evening.
However, I figured that I could put down another coat of bedliner on it before mowing and apply more coats throughout the evening and it would dry while I mowed.
Here it is most of the way through with the bright sun shining on it.

It's hard to capture the texture of the bedliner.  It looks like black textured laminate.  I've used it all small projects and it's always turned out great.
(No I didn't bother puttying screw holes.....because I just don't feel like going to to the trouble)

Now the thing I don't like about the bedliner is that it results in a rough sandpaper like surface that holds dust and snags anything you try to clean it with.
On my other projects, I applied clearcoat over the bedliner and it came out perfect.  Almost exactly like laminate.
Something went wrong when I applied the clearcoat this time and it got all hazy and splotchy.  I don't think I sprayed it too thick, but I may have sprayed it before the bedliner had cured enough.  Anyway, I'm left with this ugly mess.  I can probably salvage it by repainting the whole thing with semi-gloss black, but having to redo it really takes the wind out of my sails on this build.  Especially when I have other cool projects that I need to be making more progress on.

It looks worse than yesterday when it only had the first coat on it....and it has 4 coats plus clearcoat.  :badmood:
I'm gonna focus on artwork for now.  If the artwork comes out well, I'll feel like putting the effort into repainting the cab.
