Newbie's first Cab build!
« on: May 14, 2012, 09:00:32 am »
Thought I'd officailly announce my first build.

I'm only at design stage, but I thought if I at least announce it, I might actually get round to building it!

Design considerations so far (comments welcome):

I'm building this cab to play some of may favourite arcade games, primarily:
- Commando
- Galaxian
- Operation Wolf / Thunderbolt
- Chase HQ
- Ikari Warriors
- Karate Champ
- Star Wars
- Rampart

From this, I've decided:
- light gun(s) a definate (aim trak seems to be the way forward..)
- "Ikari" stick (at least one)
- trackball
- spinner? Not sure- not a huge Tempest/Arkanoid fan.. comments/suggestions?
- dual sticks
- steering wheel
- buttons in a Neo Geo / SF config (7 buttons per player)
- main sticks 360 ultimates?

My control panel can't be more than 26" wide, so I'm considering swappable panels:
- one main 2 player Sf config with trackball / spinner. Ikari stick in place of spinner?
- one with dual sticks
- one with steering wheel

Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated, as designing the panel seems to be the bit that needs most thought!

cheers

Dave

You have to do a modular design if you need all of those controls and only have 26" of real estate.  Don't try to jam them in there.

Yep.  Although I'm generally a defender of the "Frankenpanel," once you start adding steering wheels and/or Star Wars yokes, you're going to find they take up so much space they'll crowd out most everything else.

Modular sound like the way to go, especially if you want dual sticks for Karate Champ AND rotaries for Ikari Warriors.

And you're going to need the track ball to play Star Wars if you don't get a yoke. It's doable, but obviously not the same.

Good luck!
