First Cab Build - Almost done!
« on: December 25, 2012, 02:34:05 am »
I was lucky enough to find a cool local collector who sold me this machine for a good price. The monitor was broken, but excluding the control panel the cabinet was still in good condition with no water damage - just ugly. It had a CPS2 board with xmen vs street fighter in it which powers on (well the fan does) but with no monitor/speakers I couldn't test beyond that (the cps2 is for sale make an offer).

Stripped out guts, thorough cleaning, paint (laminate countertop paint) and some modification to the control panel area.

Love that cab profile! So much potential for some great lighting accents and artwork as a solo cab (i.e. alone with no other cabs on either side). have fun!

good day.

Thanks. I liked the design of the cabinet as well. Seemed quite unique. I'm assuming it was just a generic jamma unless anyone knows differently?

Yeah that's gonna be a cool-looking cab when finished.  Good stuff.

The cab is great but the control panel is overpowering...doesn't look natural.

How many dead midgets do you think you could get in that CP? I'm guessing 2

No, No, No, No, let me ask you a question. When you came pulling in here, did you notice a sign out in front of that CP that said "Dead Midget Storage"?

Hey, looks similar to my 4 player cab I build many moons ago.. just a question about P3 & P4 buttons.. as it looks like you made the buttons run on parallel to the P1 & P2 buttons even though P3 & P4 will be at a 45 degree angle.  You may want to think about having P3 & P4 buttons be on a 45 as well since that's a bit more natural to how they are standing and where P3 & P4 hands will be placed..

I live in a suburb of New Orleans, LA (the Mississippi River seperates me from the city), and for the CPS2 just make an offer ill accept anything that is reasonable .

For P3 & P4 the buttons/joystick are mounted at an angle - up on the joystick isn't straight up to ward the monitor but a diagonal so that it works corrected based in the users perspective etc and the buttons are setup in a diamond layout.

I chose a 4 8 8 4 layout because  I wanted 8 available for P1&2 for psx,ps2, wii, and others that may need it, but knowing the majority of games supporting more than 2 players use 4 buttons or less I figured 8 at those spots would be a waste.

The cp does stick out right now, but once I get the tmolding on, and get the laminate/paint matching the rest it will look great, and as a final step it will get a nice custom overlay and a sheet of lexan.

Everyone who mentioned the lighting and graphic potential I'd love to here your ideas! I'm unfortunately getting divorced in march and about the only good part of it is that the cab can go in a corner of my living room so that my kids and/or I can play without being seperated from everyone who isn't playing, but Because it'll be in the front room I want it to look as awesome as I can get it.

Also coming, airsoft ak47 lightgun conversions with recoil and mounts on sides of cab!

Edit: I am also considering a push/pull spinner above the trackball and twin replica tron sticks with dual thumb buttons from groovy gamer on both sides of it but Im not sure if ill use them enough (I'm 26 and was raised on NES so I missed a lot of those type games).

I got that trackball (happ 3") for $15 shipped on eBay it works but the y-axis isn't perfect so ill eventually being replacing the rollers when I get a translucent blue, smoke, or clear ball and mount some LEDs.

Finally it looks like these zippy sticks from twisted quarter should work with the shaft/balls from paradise arcade so ill eventually have lights there as well.

EDIT: one thing I forgot was I want to put white labels on the black player 1-4 start buttons and the admin panel's 4 black buttons (currently two blue and two white are in the spot while I wait for the 4 blacks to arrive) - pause, exit, list, and shift, as well as headphone icon, volume icon, and USB letters or icon above the headphone jack/volume knob/USB port. Anyone know if that guy Pongo is still around and in business? I not is there someone else selling these?

Made more progress and therefore took more pics! All that's left is finishing the restoration of the coin door, finishing up the CP wiring, finishing designing the artwork (my mom works at a school that has one of those giant color printers and a giant laminator, so all it took was my son saying please with sad eyes lol), volume knob/headphone jack/USB jack/4 black buttons for admin panel (I forgot to order them so they are coming now), trimming the tinted plexiglass to fit to cover the monitor, and finally the tmolding for the control panel!

Long term goals are building airsoft & Aimtrak based light guns with holsters on both sides of the cab, covering the painted control panel and admin panel with black laminate, clear trackball with RGB LED setup and new bearings, clear balltops/Hollow shaft/RGB LEDs from paradise arcade, high low spinner from groovy gamer gear above the trackball, 2 tron sticks with LED lights one on each side of the spinner, plexiglass for control panel, and building a subwoofer enclosure into the bottom of the cab firing out of the back. (At the right price id love a Star Wars yolk to build a removable mount for but that will probably be saved for a future racing/flight sim/ space sit down cab!)

Anyone know if that guy Pongo is still around and in business?

As of several days ago, he announced his decision here to throw in the towel because his vinyl cutter has been struggling lately cutting the fine details.

Once he sells the last of his already cut #5's, he's done.

Anyone want to take over production?
Update 1-27-13 End of the road.
. . .
I'll gladly post up the vector files if someone else has access to a cutter.

Im not one for dogging peoples work, but you need to try and do a version 2.0 on that control panel. Its too big and looks too out of place on what is an otherwise nice cab.

Yeah, redo the panel and you'll have a nice cabinet.
