If you want to have the hinges invisible, try the kitchen hinges for microwave doors.

Having it open forward doesn't make it akward to work on at all, and having it open forward is easier then having it rear hinged and having the sticks bang into the monitor glass.

Your solution works too.  More than one way to do it.

They worked great!   They are on the front of the box.  I agree it does not make it awkward to work on this way.   Having the hinges on the back would bump my joysticks into the screen.   

And I didn't really do anything to get the box to stay shut.   The general weight of the control panel keeps it there, and the hinges hold it in place.
