First Juke - CD-100 converted to SKJuke
« on: April 28, 2011, 09:55:34 pm »
A while back I picked up a partially stripped Rowe Cd-100 machine so I decided rather than building from scratch, I would convert it to an SKjukebox machine.  I originally though I could cram a 32-40" LCD in there and make some badass juke but once I actually got around to measuring it, the glass portion has some rough proportions and the most I was going to be able to fit would be a 24-26" without the light shroud.  Then I began thinking that I wanted to go with a touchscreen so off I went to nab one off ebay.  My first one didn't power up but after a swap I did get a working one that I really like.  I installed E-Touch 7.02 Demo and absolutely loved it.  Unfortunately after more thinking (I need to stop doing that) I really didn't want to ignore the great keypad controls built into the Rowe Juke so I ended up with a 22" Acer LCD and SKjukebox like originally planned.  I guess the touchscreen will go in a custom build juke 2.0.  Enough jabbering, on to the pics.

This is the machine as it arrived at my house.  Notice the dent on the top right speaker grill.

The button panel is missing a button but the guy I bought it from is going to pull a panel from another machine for me.

So the gutting begins.  Everything came out of the juke except for the lighting wiring and the speakers.  I tried a lot of different speaker configurations but ultimately ended up just adding some resistors to the stock speakers and buying a 200w 2 channel amp.  It sounds better than I could have imagined.

The right side of the top speaker grill was dented pretty bad.   It looked like someone tried to put their fist through it.  The guy I bought it from is also taking a good grill off a bad machine for me but I didn't feel like waiting so I decided to try hammering it out.  The grills on the CD-100a also have this white speckled paint on them which may have looked good once but on a 20+ year old machine it just looked like crap.  A couple cans of black spraypaint and im much happier with the outcome.

My state of the art workstation....lol I dont know why I insisted on doing the computer part of this in my filthy garage.

All the original lighting works and today I added the LCD.

The lights for the spinning CDs aren't working.  Im not sure if im going to replace them or not.  Im considering removing the spinning CD and adding a backlit marquee/graphic instead.  I need to add a bezel to the monitor.  I gave my Ipac2 to a friend for his juke so my new one wont be here until tomorrow.  Then I can get the button panel working.  Im very happy with the progress and glad I chose to NOT use the toughscreen in this cabinet.

Nice work  :applaud: :applaud:  Those spinning CDs look great on a juke.  Hope you take a look to see if you can get them working. Much more attractive than a backlit marquee IMO.

Actually the spinning CDs themselved do work, its just the lights that don't.  Its easy enough to fix.  My friend has a small led/laser strip that actually shoots 5 different colored beams in a half circle which might actually look really cool reflecting off those spinning CDs.  Im going to try a few things before I make a decision.

Im open to suggestions on the bezel.  I picked up a 2'x4' piece of 1/8' oak plywood today and I was going to plunge cut for the monitor and use that as the bezel.  When the cabinet door closes the white light shroud should seal right up to the bezel (with a little added foam to tighten the seal).  The question is what to do with the bezel.  Paint, Laminate, or scrap the wood altogether and go with an opaque acrylic bezel?  Any suggestions are welcome.  1/8" or so is all the thickness I need.

It would be awesome to get as big as a monitor as you could in there, what size is the opening it that thing anyways?

35"x17".  I looked at all different sizes.  I didn't want it to be overbearing.  I think the 22" has a good balance of space.  If I went too big it would fill the whole vertical space but I would still have to fill the horizontal space.  The way it is now I will have a somewhat balanced bezel all around the monitor.

I cut the bezel tonight from that 1/8" oak plywood.  I need to build a small frame behind it so it doesn't warp and so it will maintain a little pressure against the light shroud so its not leaking light around the edges.  I haven't actually mounted it yet, this is just a shot of it with tape holding it in place.  Now I need to decide what to face it with.  I was thinking black laminate originally but now im not sure.  I could go with a graphic or even an off white to match the light shroud.  Any suggestions?

I made some cuts on the board for the keypad tonight and wired it up with a common ground.  My ipac arrived today so I will get that wired up tomorrow and then i'll finally have the control scheme worked out.  Im thinking of wiring the popular button as an alt key so I can double my available keys.  Will have to play with it and see what I need.

Yeah this was the keypad that came with the juke when I bought it.  Since it was missing a key the guy said he would pull one off another juke to give me.  I have been on him for a month about it and he kept "forgetting" so yesterday I showed up at the shop.  He was out on a service call so they phoned him and he told one of the kids there to help me out.  We had to move about 20 dart boards out of the way to get at these old CD-100s but in the end I walked away with an entire keypad assembly with full keys that were white instead of smoke yellow AND all the labeling is perfect which is hard to find.  So before I put it back in the machine tonight ill swap it with the new keys and then I have another set, minus the 2 key, for backups.

SO is there an update to this topic - I got one of these in original state, and I'd love to undertake a project like this!

Thanks for sharing your further progress!

EDIT: I did see a link to your BLOG, and was able to read a bit more - thanks!

if you have issues with the keys not switching properly, they can be disassembled and cleaned with some contact cleaner and they will work like new again

Sorry I never finished updating this thread.  That project was long since finished.  I got a new(er) set of complete buttons from another CD-100 juke.  I don't think I have an pics of the completed juke before I sold it but its almost identical to the earlier pic with a complete button set, black vinyl overlay on the bezel, and the dollar bill validator hold covered up.  It was a pretty sweet juke and really loud but it took up way too much space in my garage.

Hi

I'm trying to do one of these just about the same way.   Would it be possible for you to post how you did the keyboard control in detail?  I have everything else just about ready to go, but I would really like for the original keypad to control it..
thanks
troy

Well I didn't really document it well and I don't have the juke anymore BUT I do have some pics that show how I wired it and which traces I cut.  Also shows how I soldered traces together for the common ground.  If your using the same button panel you can do it the same way, if not your going to have to figure out your traces yourself.  These pics are from my friend's project using the same button panel.  He gets all the credit, I just followed his pics.

Good luck, hope those pics help.
