Hey im a long time lurker, decided to post on arcadecontrols. I finished my hyperpin cab. I bought some Sega rally cabs but when they arrive they were really beat up cracked and busted. Some of the panels on the cab were cracked all the way through, the owner actually had metal braces holding it together. On top of that the machine was freezing and parts were busted also, such as the shifter and peddles.

After much thought ive decided to salvage what i can and do a rebuild converting into a arcade/PC/PS3 racing cab. The concept is based off of Outrun, but i didn't want to emulated the same design.

The specs.
i5 760
4GB ram
GTX  260 768
Logitech G27
32" LG LCD 1080p
BUTTKICKER FTT (this thing is gonna rumble)
I will be running hyperspin front end.

Here's what i have mocked up in the garage, test fitting carboard pieces

heres a photoshopped version of what im going to do. The artwork inst complete im still playing around

Here updated pictures.

I love the artwork.  Where are you based?  UK?  Just a guess as the gear stick is on the left :)

The artwork is great looking. I would like to see the gray parts white instead though. Just to know what it'd look like. :applaud:

;D  Always happy to see a driving cab build.

I have the same basic cab your base is made out of if you need any dimensions.
That seat is going to be a LOT more comfortable than the plastic one.

Check out the threads in my sig if you haven't come across them already.

Thanks man, actually i saw your thread over a year ago before i consider all my options your threads were a great help to understand the difference between the wheel types. Your build was nice also. Loved how you recreated the dash.

I'm still on the fence about the seat and the artwork. I like the idea of a of a racing seat, but the problem is there not very comfortable. Also if im planning on sitting in this thing for 2-3 hrs playing NFS shift i want it comfy Ill probably look for a black leather seat, i thought i could pass with a biege seat being the theme is a sports car "out run"

Driving cabs are rare on this form its so weird.

As for the art i have a new concept, ill post that shortly. I've also built a proof of concept with a working prototype.

Check out www.thewayiplay.com if you are into racing sims.  There are lot of home built cockpits there, not so many arcade type though.  The are rebuilding pedals and gear shifts all day long there.

Your set up is cool.  Where did you source seat?  What car is it from?

Got it out of a Acura Integra. Im on the hunt for a black one I think i found one:)
yeah at first i was going to build a sim. But then decided not to  go that route, Im more arcade type racing NFS shift/GT5/Classic mame/Sega M2.
I tried playing LFS "sim" games and i hate them there too hard. also at one time was look at hooking up X-sim but its kinda overkill and too much can go wrong.

Where are you at?  I was going to ask if you had a spare dashboard from one of the Sega Rally cabs, but I assumed you weren't in the US since the shifter in your rendering was on the left.  Even if it's cracked, I'm interested.

Are you using all these components (minus those sneakers of course) in your outrun build?  Or are you opting for arcade quality parts?

If you went with arcade quality parts would you go happ?  I like your plans for the cab and I do like the new driving seat you go too.  Looks nice.  Where did you buy it and how much?  (if you don't mind me asking)

Only reason I ask is My parents saw yesterday how good my cocktail table i am building is coming out (they where amazing, I guess they have no confidence in me before hahahha) and want to know if there was a way to make a driving race car cabinet like the one you are building.

I haven't seen many on this forum.  If anyone has any links could they send um my way.  I searched and find only bits and pieces.

Thanks I am subscribing to your post so I can see you progress.  I can't wait looks great so far.

Yes ill be using all compnets and try to figure out a to use the speakers also. If the speakers dont work i have a set of Z2300. Ill be mounting the BUTTKICKER ( SHAKER AMP) to the bottom of the seat.

I went back and forth about using an arcade wheel. I even bought the parts and was going to use a HAPP's wheel merge with a logitech wheel. In the end i didn't go that route because i want to play games on PC NFS shift, Dirt2, Gran turismo. These games use a 6 Speed Shifter and cluch. Also by going with the a G27 Wheel  i can play anything on PS2 and PS3. The Cabinet will support mame, and M2 eumlation. (hopefully future M3) But Mame Doesn't have a ton of quality racing games and M2 is limited (Daytona usa, Sega Rally).

The racing seat was from a place called ultraset up in canada i paid 125.00 +50.00 shipping wasnt too bad. If your in the US you could probably get a better deal off ebay.

175 total for the chair is a good deal.  Does it have a slide adjustment to go back and forth for shorter and tall people to play the cab?

Yeah I never thought about how many racing games are on mame.  I never tried the M2 but looks fun.  Good thinking of the PC games too to be involved.

I have an xbox 360 stearing wheel.  It seems pretty sturdy for family game play but I am sure it wouldn't last long.  I wish it had a shifter but it only has the paddle shifters.  I just drive with it on my lap.  It was fun for an hour.  Got bored fast.  I was playing Forza.  It was good but too long to open up all the cool cars.  I like burnout 3 seeing you can blow stuff up but I never tried it with the stearing wheel.

Always fun to talk shop thanks for all the info and I love the new photos you posted too.

With your artwork.  I always wonder what material that it is printed on?  Vinyl sticker material?   We have this stuff called control tack at work but looks really heavy duty.  Like weather proof stuff.

Ok now I am just babbling.  Thanks again for talking shop.

If you need something to cover the pedal area with, I found a rubber runner at Lowe's that's a really close match to the stuff under the chair section.
It was easier to replace it than try to get the original clean.

I think this was it, but the ribs don't show up in the pic
http://www.lowes.com/pd_115763-84875-BM1100_4294934373__?productId=3104663&Ntt=runner&Ns=p_product_price|0&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl_Flooring_4294934373__s%3FNs%3Dp_product_price%7C0%26Ntt%3Drunner&facetInfo=
(they have a smaller one that's only 3 bucks, but it doesn't give the dimensions and wasn't stocked at my local lowes http://www.lowes.com/pd_115764-84875-BM1101_0__?productId=3377894&Ntt=runner&Ns=p_product_price|0&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNs%3Dp_product_price%7C0%26Ntt%3Drunner&facetInfo= )

Your local home improvement store should have something similar.

Of course with the nice seat, you could choose to go with carpet.....

The artwork is being printed on Vinyl, with laminate on top. It basically the same material they use on Race car decals. I used this on my pinball cabinet.
I am looking for mat for the floor but something more of the lines of a Steel box texture. I've looked everywhere i cant find, but i have seen it out there.

vinyl with a laminate top.  Sounds really nice.  Where do you get that printed at?   I printed artwork at work on our printer but it scratched off easy for my cocktail table.  It might have to do for now because I need a custom size and I might just trim it myself.  If i find the right material to print on.

Printing was done locally, when looking for a print ask to see if they use an ECO- SOL (solvent based) printer. and if they apply a cold lamintate over top its will be very durable. I think mamemarquees does this kind of printing method.

You can probably get real aluminum diamond plate for $25-30.
Definitely no worries about durabiliity.
Check with a local welder or machine shop.

Epic project, just the right amount of sim & arcade + that mod twist & tidy sleek artwork

I want to copy off you exactly, nice!

Here is a good source for diamond plate which he will cut to size for you: http://www.cutsmetal.net/

Seriously, get to work & post more pics broseph. I am wanting to see how you mount the steering wheel, pedals, pc & etc before I get into something similar. Hell I could sorta use your plans....

I know this info is late for the OP but others following the thread may want to check out seats here as well http://www.summitracing.com/search/Department/Interior-Accessories/Part-Type/Racing-Seats/?Ns=Price|Asc Thats where I plan to acquire mine, FYI most require a bracket such as this one: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G1153/?rtype=10. I like how there are colorful seats to match a persons theme or art. The lower cost ones sure look like they belong in a machine eh?

Dude I dont know if you plan to mount the pedals upside down but that would be sweet. Also look at the cool cup holder pic I attached, its installed on a side mount type tower just like your plans call for (how perfect is that). Just make sure the cup holder isnt before the shifter (DOGH) if you go that route.

I know this is your project & I am bringing up elements that I want to inject into my build but I figured speaking up now while you are building might be helpful. Its better to share ideas now while you construct vs withold them until you finish the build  >:D I really am going to copy off you so its the least I can do (no worries, I will do a Race Drivin or Hard Drivin theme).

Ok, done hijacking  ;D

Thanks for the kind words.
I haven't mounted the LCD yet, ill have to see how that goes. I was on the fence for a long time if i should build an X-SIM motion rig. I came to the conclusion i didn't want to deal with maintenance.

I'm still trying to figure out a way to mount the wheel if i use an extension or if i cut the dash. I'm going to try an extension first, but ill have to open up the wheel first.

As for the peddles i will be under mounting them, like the video. I will probably add a mod to the brake also so it feels more realistic. I picked up a checker board pattern for the floor. It basically the diamond plate pattern in black rubber, I went this route because i don't my heel slideing around when playing.

As for the shifter I'm still trying to figure that out, i want something more integrated so it looks like its part of the machine. I'm looking at options now.

This is a great project. If you haven't found a place to print your art, I just had mine done at an automotive printer here in canada called Payton Thomas Industries in Langley, BC. Since I provided my own art it was cheap but the quality was excellent.

http://www.paytonthomas.com/

I am a huge fan of diamond plate. I have it everywhere I can - the laundry room floor, in my truck... and on the front of my guitar! For the laundry room floor, it's not really metal but vinyl flooring by a company called Tarkett. Your local carpet & flooring co should have the stuff, or at least be able to order it in. Maybe if you have an End of the Roll in your neighborhood they have a scrap?

I've been thinking of making a slim driving cab with a seat that slides right into the machine to keep the footprint down. Yours is looking good and I'm taking notes on what a great driving cab entails! Then it's off to the drawing board to figure out how to make it small...

Another productive weekend.
Got the TV installed along with the wheel.. I took the whole wheel apart and came to the conclusion to cut the dash and refinish it. There was cig burns, and cracks in it anyways.

Making a platform for the wheel to clamp on to

Bracket for the TV

Im using the original base for the machine but i had tor re drill the holes.

Shot of the TV sitting in side but inst mounted yet

Sideview of the everything with the seat

Next up mount TV to the cleets..
-Finish the top panel.
-build a speaker panel
-Mount the peddles.
-Make a Shifter box and E-brake

This thing is so bad ass looking! Nice choice of theme too. Always loved Out Run. Grew up playing it on the Master System. Can't wait for more progress updates!
