Hey im a long time lurker, decided to post on arcadecontrols. I finished my hyperpin cab. I bought some Sega rally cabs but when they arrive they were really beat up cracked and busted. Some of the panels on the cab were cracked all the way through, the owner actually had metal braces holding it together. On top of that the machine was freezing and parts were busted also, such as the shifter and peddles.

After much thought ive decided to salvage what i can and do a rebuild converting into a arcade/PC/PS3 racing cab. The concept is based off of Outrun, but i didn't want to emulated the same design.

The specs.
i5 760
4GB ram
GTX  260 768
Logitech G27
32" LG LCD 1080p
BUTTKICKER FTT (this thing is gonna rumble)
I will be running hyperspin front end.

Here's what i have mocked up in the garage, test fitting carboard pieces

heres a photoshopped version of what im going to do. The artwork inst complete im still playing around

Here updated pictures.

I love the artwork.  Where are you based?  UK?  Just a guess as the gear stick is on the left :)

The artwork is great looking. I would like to see the gray parts white instead though. Just to know what it'd look like. :applaud:

;D  Always happy to see a driving cab build.

I have the same basic cab your base is made out of if you need any dimensions.
That seat is going to be a LOT more comfortable than the plastic one.

Check out the threads in my sig if you haven't come across them already.

Thanks man, actually i saw your thread over a year ago before i consider all my options your threads were a great help to understand the difference between the wheel types. Your build was nice also. Loved how you recreated the dash.

I'm still on the fence about the seat and the artwork. I like the idea of a of a racing seat, but the problem is there not very comfortable. Also if im planning on sitting in this thing for 2-3 hrs playing NFS shift i want it comfy Ill probably look for a black leather seat, i thought i could pass with a biege seat being the theme is a sports car "out run"

Driving cabs are rare on this form its so weird.

As for the art i have a new concept, ill post that shortly. I've also built a proof of concept with a working prototype.

Check out www.thewayiplay.com if you are into racing sims.  There are lot of home built cockpits there, not so many arcade type though.  The are rebuilding pedals and gear shifts all day long there.

Your set up is cool.  Where did you source seat?  What car is it from?

Got it out of a Acura Integra. Im on the hunt for a black one I think i found one:)
yeah at first i was going to build a sim. But then decided not to  go that route, Im more arcade type racing NFS shift/GT5/Classic mame/Sega M2.
I tried playing LFS "sim" games and i hate them there too hard. also at one time was look at hooking up X-sim but its kinda overkill and too much can go wrong.

Where are you at?  I was going to ask if you had a spare dashboard from one of the Sega Rally cabs, but I assumed you weren't in the US since the shifter in your rendering was on the left.  Even if it's cracked, I'm interested.

Are you using all these components (minus those sneakers of course) in your outrun build?  Or are you opting for arcade quality parts?

If you went with arcade quality parts would you go happ?  I like your plans for the cab and I do like the new driving seat you go too.  Looks nice.  Where did you buy it and how much?  (if you don't mind me asking)

Only reason I ask is My parents saw yesterday how good my cocktail table i am building is coming out (they where amazing, I guess they have no confidence in me before hahahha) and want to know if there was a way to make a driving race car cabinet like the one you are building.

I haven't seen many on this forum.  If anyone has any links could they send um my way.  I searched and find only bits and pieces.

Thanks I am subscribing to your post so I can see you progress.  I can't wait looks great so far.

Yes ill be using all compnets and try to figure out a to use the speakers also. If the speakers dont work i have a set of Z2300. Ill be mounting the BUTTKICKER ( SHAKER AMP) to the bottom of the seat.

I went back and forth about using an arcade wheel. I even bought the parts and was going to use a HAPP's wheel merge with a logitech wheel. In the end i didn't go that route because i want to play games on PC NFS shift, Dirt2, Gran turismo. These games use a 6 Speed Shifter and cluch. Also by going with the a G27 Wheel  i can play anything on PS2 and PS3. The Cabinet will support mame, and M2 eumlation. (hopefully future M3) But Mame Doesn't have a ton of quality racing games and M2 is limited (Daytona usa, Sega Rally).

The racing seat was from a place called ultraset up in canada i paid 125.00 +50.00 shipping wasnt too bad. If your in the US you could probably get a better deal off ebay.

175 total for the chair is a good deal.  Does it have a slide adjustment to go back and forth for shorter and tall people to play the cab?

Yeah I never thought about how many racing games are on mame.  I never tried the M2 but looks fun.  Good thinking of the PC games too to be involved.

I have an xbox 360 stearing wheel.  It seems pretty sturdy for family game play but I am sure it wouldn't last long.  I wish it had a shifter but it only has the paddle shifters.  I just drive with it on my lap.  It was fun for an hour.  Got bored fast.  I was playing Forza.  It was good but too long to open up all the cool cars.  I like burnout 3 seeing you can blow stuff up but I never tried it with the stearing wheel.

Always fun to talk shop thanks for all the info and I love the new photos you posted too.

With your artwork.  I always wonder what material that it is printed on?  Vinyl sticker material?   We have this stuff called control tack at work but looks really heavy duty.  Like weather proof stuff.

Ok now I am just babbling.  Thanks again for talking shop.

If you need something to cover the pedal area with, I found a rubber runner at Lowe's that's a really close match to the stuff under the chair section.
It was easier to replace it than try to get the original clean.

I think this was it, but the ribs don't show up in the pic
http://www.lowes.com/pd_115763-84875-BM1100_4294934373__?productId=3104663&Ntt=runner&Ns=p_product_price|0&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl_Flooring_4294934373__s%3FNs%3Dp_product_price%7C0%26Ntt%3Drunner&facetInfo=
(they have a smaller one that's only 3 bucks, but it doesn't give the dimensions and wasn't stocked at my local lowes http://www.lowes.com/pd_115764-84875-BM1101_0__?productId=3377894&Ntt=runner&Ns=p_product_price|0&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNs%3Dp_product_price%7C0%26Ntt%3Drunner&facetInfo= )

Your local home improvement store should have something similar.

Of course with the nice seat, you could choose to go with carpet.....

The artwork is being printed on Vinyl, with laminate on top. It basically the same material they use on Race car decals. I used this on my pinball cabinet.
I am looking for mat for the floor but something more of the lines of a Steel box texture. I've looked everywhere i cant find, but i have seen it out there.

vinyl with a laminate top.  Sounds really nice.  Where do you get that printed at?   I printed artwork at work on our printer but it scratched off easy for my cocktail table.  It might have to do for now because I need a custom size and I might just trim it myself.  If i find the right material to print on.

Printing was done locally, when looking for a print ask to see if they use an ECO- SOL (solvent based) printer. and if they apply a cold lamintate over top its will be very durable. I think mamemarquees does this kind of printing method.

You can probably get real aluminum diamond plate for $25-30.
Definitely no worries about durabiliity.
Check with a local welder or machine shop.

Epic project, just the right amount of sim & arcade + that mod twist & tidy sleek artwork

I want to copy off you exactly, nice!

Here is a good source for diamond plate which he will cut to size for you: http://www.cutsmetal.net/

Seriously, get to work & post more pics broseph. I am wanting to see how you mount the steering wheel, pedals, pc & etc before I get into something similar. Hell I could sorta use your plans....

I know this info is late for the OP but others following the thread may want to check out seats here as well http://www.summitracing.com/search/Department/Interior-Accessories/Part-Type/Racing-Seats/?Ns=Price|Asc Thats where I plan to acquire mine, FYI most require a bracket such as this one: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G1153/?rtype=10. I like how there are colorful seats to match a persons theme or art. The lower cost ones sure look like they belong in a machine eh?

Dude I dont know if you plan to mount the pedals upside down but that would be sweet. Also look at the cool cup holder pic I attached, its installed on a side mount type tower just like your plans call for (how perfect is that). Just make sure the cup holder isnt before the shifter (DOGH) if you go that route.

I know this is your project & I am bringing up elements that I want to inject into my build but I figured speaking up now while you are building might be helpful. Its better to share ideas now while you construct vs withold them until you finish the build  >:D I really am going to copy off you so its the least I can do (no worries, I will do a Race Drivin or Hard Drivin theme).

Ok, done hijacking  ;D

Thanks for the kind words.
I haven't mounted the LCD yet, ill have to see how that goes. I was on the fence for a long time if i should build an X-SIM motion rig. I came to the conclusion i didn't want to deal with maintenance.

I'm still trying to figure out a way to mount the wheel if i use an extension or if i cut the dash. I'm going to try an extension first, but ill have to open up the wheel first.

As for the peddles i will be under mounting them, like the video. I will probably add a mod to the brake also so it feels more realistic. I picked up a checker board pattern for the floor. It basically the diamond plate pattern in black rubber, I went this route because i don't my heel slideing around when playing.

As for the shifter I'm still trying to figure that out, i want something more integrated so it looks like its part of the machine. I'm looking at options now.

This is a great project. If you haven't found a place to print your art, I just had mine done at an automotive printer here in canada called Payton Thomas Industries in Langley, BC. Since I provided my own art it was cheap but the quality was excellent.

http://www.paytonthomas.com/

I am a huge fan of diamond plate. I have it everywhere I can - the laundry room floor, in my truck... and on the front of my guitar! For the laundry room floor, it's not really metal but vinyl flooring by a company called Tarkett. Your local carpet & flooring co should have the stuff, or at least be able to order it in. Maybe if you have an End of the Roll in your neighborhood they have a scrap?

I've been thinking of making a slim driving cab with a seat that slides right into the machine to keep the footprint down. Yours is looking good and I'm taking notes on what a great driving cab entails! Then it's off to the drawing board to figure out how to make it small...

Another productive weekend.
Got the TV installed along with the wheel.. I took the whole wheel apart and came to the conclusion to cut the dash and refinish it. There was cig burns, and cracks in it anyways.

Making a platform for the wheel to clamp on to

Bracket for the TV

Im using the original base for the machine but i had tor re drill the holes.

Shot of the TV sitting in side but inst mounted yet

Sideview of the everything with the seat

Next up mount TV to the cleets..
-Finish the top panel.
-build a speaker panel
-Mount the peddles.
-Make a Shifter box and E-brake

I dont know the bolt name but i do know there metric.
I using a 32" LCD and used "M6" bolts. 30mm The bolts do range in size from M4-M8. M8 is what you would use on a larger LCD's like 40+.

Well after all that work Ive decided to scratch the shifter idea. I'm going with a mounted on shifter like the arcade instead ill have to do some major hacking on the wheel. Im going this route because i wasn't happy with the look of the shifter it look balky. Im still going to build an E-brake into the seat.

Ive also re design some of the artwork and ill probably do it again before the project is complete (im picky). The initial design was too red, also i didn't like the style of the old school cab. Add some sex appeal and voila.

It ain't easy coming up with a theme.  I still haven't.
(your pin theme is total perfection btw)

How about ditching the red completely and making it all black with palm trees against the evening sky?
It could be Outrun Black Edition or Night Edition or something.
....maybe bling it up with some chrome t-molding.

Yeah im still playing with ideas, like i said ill probably do some other concepts. Im not a Fan of the Outrun 2 artwork, i was looking into that but i don't like the CG aspect. Also the size of the one side is a tough one because of the size its hard to design for.
 No biggie.

Ill probably end up adding lights to the back. Im trying something different with the dash today.

Big changes to the cab i decide to toss the original idea out the window and redo and reinvent how to approach this thing.  I'm mounting the Steering wheel behind the dash also im using the old frame to mount the G27 Shifter. In order to do such tasks i have to take a buzz saw to everything.... I'm almost read of paint i need to finish the steering and dash and im ready to roll.

Peddles now hard mounted.

Loving the cabinet and art work nice choice using the GTA 4 girls it works well.

As for the speaker grill you could get some plexiglass with the speaker design added in then the sega logo could glow.

You could use some small off cuts of wood and make two frames then just slot the wood inside the frame to have the look you want.

Thanks for the idea on the plexi,  this cabinet feels like its taking forever. I have to do some repo some stickers for this thing also. Today i refurb some of the floor i also clean a ton of rust off the base and stainless steel parts.
Waiting for the base to dry so i can mount the seat. Ill put an order into groovey game gear for some T-track. Over the past weekend i painted the final coat clean out all the trash, rust and dust from the base, it was pretty nasty. Thank god for the pressure washer.

Here's some updated pics.

driving cab info link in my sig

Not really plans, but enough dimensions to get someone started with their own design.

I add more info fairly often, but usually don't bump it.
I'll add "last updated" back to my sig so people are aware that it's been updated.

That diamond plate looks awesome btw.

 :drool

btw.....M2 Emulator v1.0 will go widescreen if you select Custom (set in .ini) under the video tab,
then set your resolution in the EMULATOR.ini file.

FullScreenWidth=1440
FullScreenHeight=900

WideScreenWindow=1

AutoFull=1

I've only done a little testing with Daytona since I don't have a widescreen on my cab.
The attract mode is widescreen, then it switches to 4:3 for the track and transmission select.
Then the game is in widescreen.  Doesn't look stretched or anything, just like it was made for widescreen.
It looks sweet!

I can convert eps to dxf, which will cut fine, but if you want it in 3D instead of 2D, whip up a perspective sketch and I can see what I can do with it.  2D is east as pie.  I'd be glad to help on so cool a project!

I had a problem with the buttons. there too long (deep) so what i did was cut about 1/4 off each button its kinda tricky because you have to take off a 1/4 in between the button. If you remove the back part you lose the molding that holds the micro switch and the spring.

After some shoegoo and crazy glue the buttons hold up nicely.

Also the artwork has finally ARRIVED!!!!!!! WOOT!

I can finally finish the rest of the cabinet with the wiring and tweaks to the wheel, im also planning on hacking the original shifter so it works with 6 speed.

Heres a teaser.
The colors came out great.

The racing seat was from a place called ultraset up in canada i paid 125.00 +50.00 shipping wasnt too bad. If your in the US you could probably get a better deal off ebay.

(I'm stuck at work and bored)

Ebay, Amazon, or Summit Racing.
I've had one picked out for months, but want to make sure the new dash turns out good before laying out the money for it.
Also a bit worried about guests at my home bar damaging it.
I've considered making nicer "upstairs" machines that are only for my own use.  :lol

Hey Sorry for the lack of updates. I haven't made any leway on the cabinet. Its all in pieces still, lol..
yeah the button layout was giving me problems but i figured out a way to get around it.

I wanted to keep the button layout simple 4 buttons and a start button. The problem that i have is the games i run support more then 5 buttons. and i didnt want to mount 16 buttons.

So instead im going to hack an Original PS1 controller and wire it an Ipac. This will allow me to support the basic 5 on top of the up down left right function and support for another 8 buttons and i can hide the controller.

As for the seat.
I got mine locally, but you can get them off eBay also. Check Kijiji as they pop up on there also. If you looking for a really nice seat out of a car look for an Acura RSX seat.

OMG ! Wonderful !! :applaud:
Great job !
For perfect the cab, I advise you to use a real arcade racing wheel (from a sega rally cab for example), even the integration is very good !
For the seat, try to put loudspeaker in the seat, it give an awesome effect  ;)

This looks deceptively like CNC work...  Tell me, you didn't do all this by hand, right?  (I have a CarveWright, and I still struggle with getting results like these ones.  Or, at least, results I am impressed with.)

 :dizzy:

Amazing.  Simply amazing.

No cnc work here. I wish i had the space and time to build one. It was done by hand using a plunge router and table saw. The wood is easier to work with because it's thin hardboard. The other idea I had was using sintra for material but was too flimsy.

I may upgrade the wheel in the future if I find one. But the whole machine shakes as there is a 1500watt bass shaker in it

I LOVE hardboard.  I'm presently working with 1/4" and 1/8" hardboard, and some of the stuff I've churned out looks pretty good.  Mostly, I use it to create templates for my hand router (non-plunge) and go crazy with that, but I've just started on some of the 'vent work' for my cab since I noticed yours turned out so beautiful.  It's a change from what I had originally planned, but it's actually much easier, and judging by the way yours turned out, will look significantly more amazing than I had originally expected.

Again, bravo.  This looks amazing.

Good work on the speaker grill. looks very pro. Where did you get that design? Made it up or copy it from the original cab?

1500watt bass lol, i have 200watt sub in my cab and i am trying to figure out how to get it more descrete (bass volume adjust already set at its lowest)

Its a transducer that goes under the seat. It takes low end frequency bass and shakes and rumbles like force feedback on a controller.
http://www.thebuttkicker.com/index.htm
Check it out i have the one for the couch installed under my seat. its Freaking awesome.
Theres a bunch of YouTube video also and yes it works very well.
the model i have is
http://www.buttkickergear.com/Wireless_ButtKicker_kit_BKA300_p/bk-kit-4.htm

You can feel the rumble in daytona. Its better than the arcade.

I've been following along with this for a while and have to say it's a very impressive project.  You've managed to combine your considerable graphics skills which really nail the Arcade atmos with build skills to match.  I'll be referencing back to this project's graphics for some inspiration ( I like the way you use colour, shading and perspective) when working on my own FE and final reveal video content.  This is an outstanding contribution to the forum.

Thanks, everyone on here references someone, and just ups the bar a year from now i'm sure cabinets are going to look insane. But thats what this site is a about good reference material and good people helping each other out. BadMouth was the grandfather of the driving cabinet. check out his thread.

Im tweaking the FE now.

Nice cab beef!!

On a side note i cant get Daytona 2 to work on supermodel, just keeps cycling through the start up menu screen and then finishes off with saying cant connect to network or something!, ive heard i need to press and hold down F2 but it appears not to work. Any ideas?

yeah you need to go into the daytona menu and setup the cabinet for single or Master rather then double cabinet. Its cycling because its trying to find the other cabs on the network.

I have my motor grounded to the amc and that grounded to the power supply, which is grounded to the wall outlet.

As far as servo amp settings right now i have mine in voltage ratio mode. Basically 2:1. Logitech reads 12v at full lock, so i hold my wheel at full lock and adjust reference in until amc outputs read 24v. One side +24v one side -24v, if one is a bit off adjust offset too correct it.
Not sure if it's 100% right way but it's working for me.
In the past others were using current mode but also 24v on the logitech. Basically same voltage different current.

Another update!...
Been awhile. I tried the wheel hack on my machine i found for the games i play i there wasnt enough options. So im going back to the G27 Wheel. I ripped apart an old the dash, The initial build i found the G27 wheel wasn't mounted properly i need something sturdy so the plan was to rebuild a new base instead of trying to hack an arcade base.

enjoy the pics,

Old dash cut up, and also major cigarette damage.

new base

The idea

Glad to see you making progress again.
I considered going the same route or switching to the sega motor hack, but really want to figure out the happ hack for the sake of others.
Haven't had any time to work on it for the last few months, but should be able to start tinkering again soon.
It may come to a point where I have to give up on it too.

Hey GBEEF

Have you given up on the HAPP FFB Hack?

I've got mine happening - couldn't be happier - not finished but it plays well.

Pretty sure I emailed you awhile ago - Anything I can do to help?

new bezel looks amazing bro.   Just a quick word about sega rally, i get weird force feedback issues too, but I dont have a hacked wheel, its just a logitech PS3 wheel plugged in via USB

cant wait to see this finished, it might motivate me to work on mine more.

I'm good. I decided to revert back to the g27. Couple reasons was time I want to play the machine. The wheel heck was too finicky I found I was spending more time tinkering then playing.  Also when I have company over I wot have to worry too much on people bagging it.

If something breaks i can replace the whole part easly. The pros with the hack was the fbb the one thing I did notice was the FFb is really on suitable for arcade games. As for sims it's a different story. As much as I love the idea of going with the orignal wheel there are too many cons.

Going to start working on panel artwork and decals soon. Just have to finish a bunch of commission work.

that artwork looks fantastic, you use the VR buttons to select games in the FE? that's brilliant! I'm going to have to make mine to that, the wheel is too touchy. I think I'm going to put a little instruction sticker where the shroud art used to be. Youre an inspiration (and a motivation)  :afro:

Thanks. I have installed the lights and hooked the  buttons up to an iPac. Probem. Is now I'm getting feedback that's affecting the iPac to turn on and off for a split second. It does this when you get in and out of the cabinet.  If anyone has any ideas around this let me know. I was thinking that the iPac needed to be grounded if that's even possible.

Any thoughts. ?

Yeah I find if you keep all the vr controls just the front end, mame and emulation it keeps it clean. The only thing I have that's a stray is the black button in between the shift and wheel that's the exit.

The next step is to build speakers into the seats.
I'll be doing that soon.  I'm pretty excited this project is almost complete and with bullet proof wheel this time.

I like the Ferrari logo on the shifter.  Nice extra touch.
Save the files for the decal above the view buttons!  I'll probably have you make me one if I ever get back to straightening out the wheel hack.
I tried doing it myself, but I can't do the shading, shadows, reflections and stuff that make it look professional.

Here we go with the seat speaker installation. I did this so i could 5.1 surround. these little speakers were part of a portable ipod carrier about the size of a large wallet.

Re: The static discharge...

If I were you, I would ground anything and everything that the player touches... such as the steering wheel,
pedals, control panel, and possibly buttons.   This may require the use of some thin metal inserts & or strips..
which you then can attach a grounding bolt, and ground all the wires to the cabinet strip... then out the ground plug.

At best, all you could do for the Ipac for safety is make a metal mesh cage.  However, thats more for static in the air, and
to protect anything from dropping on it.

You want to stop the static at the controls, and cabinet, before the surges can get anywhere near the electronics.
