Shiftermame. Help me understand...
« on: May 03, 2011, 08:41:09 am »
I think I have the hang of MAME configurations for the most part, as I've been able to run games successfully using both v.90 and MAME32.  However, Shiftermame is messing with my head.

I can get the car to steer in PP, however when I hit the gas there is a loud screeching, the car moves for mayyyyyyybe 5 secs, and then stops.  No matter what I do in the control menus, I can't get beyond this.  I also can't get the shifter to work (even though in the control mapping it does 'see' the shifter).

Do I need to d/l a specific copy of the PP rom for it to work with Shiftermame?  I just wanna take advantage of the supposed shifter tweak that is claimed to be in this version of the MAME build.

Thanks!

I'm no expert, but it sounds like you have the gas a brake mapped to the same button.

Thanks HC, I'd wondered the same, so I tried my best to make sure I had anything brake-related turned off.  It still did it anyway.  I'm sure it's something stupid that I'm doing wrong.

Does it work properly when using a keyboard  or un-hacked mouse instead?

No special rom required, but shiftermame was based on mame .125.
Major changes were done at .119 & .138, so any rom from .119-.137 should be fine.

Good question- I did not try playing it with just the board last night- I'll try that and will also see if I can find a newer copy of the ROMs as well.

Well I tried mapping the controls to the keyboard tonight and it still didn't work.   :dunno

Maybe I'll have to reinstall the app and see how I make out.

I'm just happy I have the regular version that still works with the exception of the shifter hiccup (ie have to do up and down once for low, up and down again for hi).

I have had this happen before in regular MAME. Not sure why, but deleting PP cfg files, and perhaps nvram, helped. Also, since you're using an analog pedal, make sure the 'pedal 1 analog' and 'pedal 2 analog' are set to the right controls.

OK I've got the kinks worked out with the shifter.  All is well there.

All that's left for me to troubleshoot is regarding entering initials- when I spin the wheel the letters move to the selection I want, but for some reason I can't move to the next letter to select.  In regular MAME, I can hit the gas pedal (just like in the orig) to move to the next letter.  In the copy of Shiftermame I have, I can't.

And just to alleviate any confusion, I am actually running my gas pedal with a microswitch.  The original Monaco GP cockpit game had an analog switch, but I was having trouble getting the old encoders to work with the mouse hack so I pulled the orig parts and wired in a roller microswitch.  It is set in shiftermame as P1 gas INC, and drives the car perfectly- you just can't leave your damn initials after!!  Sigh..

OK I have emailed "minwah" to see if he can help with the initial-entry issue I'm having.

What did you have to do?

What did you have to do?

Where it says "P1 gas INC" you have to point it to that switch that is used for the gas pedal, and you have to point either "P1 brake INC" or "P1 brake DEC" to the same switch.  I will double-check which one I mapped it to today.  But basically, the code has to see the 1 pedal switch as both original game pedals.
