I'm not sure I like 1080p with big screens. It seems to make film look like video.

boykster:
Its the smoothscreen / frame interpolation that makes film look like video, not 1080p

I noticed that some TVs in the stores look really awful, like the frame rate has been changed or something. Is this something that varies in quality from TV to TV? I don't seem to have this issue with my 50" Samsung.

This is a good link that discusses what it is, and how to fix it on your display.  The first thing I do when I'm demoing a display is turn off any frame interpolation. I want to view the source at the framerate it was meant to be viewed at....

For some things, it actually works well and improves the experience - sports especially, but for most film based content, it adds a really strange effect that some people really like, but others don't (me).

Vigo:
Thanks, Boykster! That explains everything. I also now understand why I don't have the issue since I have a plasma.

I agree, the effect is really weird and undesirable, especially if it is a movie you have seen before and know how it is suppose to look. I ended up passing on a deal for Stargate on Blu ray since the TV I saw it demoed on made it looked awful.
