Complete redesign due to TV failure
« on: April 12, 2011, 02:49:28 pm »
This thread was originally called "5 Inch CRT Bartop (early plans, may not come to fruition)" but due to the TV messing up (it now only has a bright line up the screen) I have redesigned the entire thing since I already had purchased the controls and the Jakks plug n play.

See this post for the new project!

Like many around here I've got ideas, perhaps too many ideas.  This one came about when I saw a 5" color CRT with A/V inputs at my local Goodwill.  Snagged it for $2.25!  A couple weeks back I also picked up a Jakks Pacific Pac-man, Rally-X, Dig-Dug, Galaxian & Bosconian plug and play with a totally useless joystick from the Goodwill for a couple dollars thinking it might end up in a project at some point in time so I've already got everything but the controls as far as electronics goes.

I was originally hoping to rearrange the electronics in the TV to allow for a cab that was not quite as deep as it is going to have to be but realized that wasn't an option when I cracked the TV open and realized the tube and neck board actually extend pretty much to the back of the casing.  After drawing a little something up in SketchUp I don't think it looks as bad as I had anticipated.

So here's what I've got.  The picture of the assembled Jakks is a random one from the internet because I didn't take a pic.  The PCB is what it looks like stripped.  In the picture of the decased TV you can see there's two boards in there, I'm guessing the vertical one is all tuner related and am considering removing it if I decide to decase the TV.

[edit]
forgot to point out that yes, the TV is displaying Ms. Pacman.  With the Pac/Rally/etc being stripped I used a Ms. Pac/Pole Pos/etc for testing.
[/edit]

If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again

Nice.  I've found little TV's at the Goodwill before, but only in B/W...

Very cool idea. I have one of those little TV's I got from GW myself for just this kind of project.

You mentioned pulling the tuner board out of the TV. Does this look like an easy thing to do? I have considered that but wasn't sure I wouldn't ruin the TV in the process.

Also, how do you plan on powering the Jakks board? Are you going to keep it battery operated or solder in a wall wort type psu? Or...?

I'm not entirely sure what kind of connectors hold the two boards together.  I gave it a little tug today and it didn't budge.  If I do decide to take it off it may require some desoldering which I'm fairly capable at.  Powering the Jakks board I haven't figured out yet.  I tried a wall wart that I had lying around and it was working with the exception of a fat opaque white line running down the screen.  Perhaps I'll try another some time in the future but I don't really know yet.

So I've done a little more SketchUp work.  Sometimes I wonder why since I don't really plan on pursuing this at the moment but here it is anyway.  The joystick I tossed in there is a random one I found in the SketchUp warehouse.  If I do build this I'll have to make sure everything is going to fit and possibly do some redesign.  So here it is, not too crazy about the sideart but we're still on Rev0.2  :P

;D Awesome find on the color CRT TV!  It might work if you made the cabinet a micro replica with the monitor at a slight angle.  I say go for it!  I think it would be pretty cool to come up with a combination graphics package for the Marquee, kick plate, bezel and side art that would encompass all five of those classic games.   ;D

If you decide not to do this project, I want the TV.   ;)

I went to Goodwill yesterday and found 3 5" TV's, all B/W, boo

Sounds like a tiny asteroids in your future!

Did those small TV's accept any input or were they antenna only?

HERE'S THE NEW PROJECT

I decided to go with a PS1 LCD screen because they're small and have AV input so are pretty much ready to go.  After a few weeks of keeping my eyes out on ebay and craigslist I scored a PS1 with screen, controller and Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 or 3 or something for $20 from a chick about a half hour from here that she'd listed on CL.  I've had it a couple weeks now disassembled waiting until I had some free time and now I finally do.  Also for a few weeks I've had a piece of MDF cut out as a "monitor panel" that fits the LCD and will serve as the bezel as well since I've chamfered it around the opening.

Today I really got into it drawing up my design in SolidWorks.  The design is pretty much the top half of a Pac-Man shrunken down to fit the size of the monitor.  The profile was drawn in just a few minutes with only a picture of the side of a cab as reference.  In other words, it's not accurate at all but it looks the part.  I've decided to have two doors on the cab for access to the CP through one and the monitor/speakers/marquee lighting/brains through the other, those are the areas where there is no dado/groove to accept the cross panels.

I've got to say this is the most excited I've been yet to own a CNC machine...  Design in the morning, have parts ready by the evening!  Here's the right cab side:

Question: How do I emulate the look of T-Molding on 1/2" MDF with router bits?

I guess I pretty much want to "bull-nose" the edge of the MDF but I've never done that before so any guidance would be great.  I imagine I'd have to use a round over bit but what size and where to ride the bearing I'm a little confused on.

Use a round over bit with a radius of 1/2 of your mdf size and ride the bearing on the middle of the MDF.

After I've done one side will the bearing have a large enough place to ride?

TO ALL CURRENT AND FUTURE CNC OWNERS AND OPERATORS

SIMULATE!

I made the stupid mistake of not simulating the paths on the left side of the cab and the bit was cutting to the left side of a line that it was supposed to be cutting to the right side of and now I have to redo the whole piece!

What not to do:

You can buy 1/2 t-molding in black or white, and colors in 5/8 (which trims up real nice to 1/2 inch) if you did want t-molding.  I just test fit a piece of 3/4 inch on 1/2 MDF and it timmed up fine too.

I've collected almost the exact same parts for a similar project.. only mine is the 8-in-1 stick and the screen is from a portable VHS (ha!) player. (Or I may use a 13" TV and do a full bartop. )Thanks for this thread as I will undoubtedly steal many ideas from you....
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Here's a shot of the two sides held together with a test CP and the chamfer around the monitor.  I'm thinking about moving the controls in away from the sides a little bit to make a little more room for the hands but I think it may look a little funny...  IDK, I'll probably try it, it's not like I can't whip up another fairly quickly.

I would consider that if this weren't a thrifty build.  I'm still trying to work out how to get sideart on the cheap...

Two questions:

1. What are the controls on the 8-in-1?  The one I have has a power switch, a reset switch and a single button.  I can't tell from the pictures or descriptions if it has some sort of reset or menu button.

2. Does it save scores?  I got one of the Ms. Pac/Galaga/Pole Position/ etc. ones that apparently was released by QVC that saves scores and I like the feature I just don't know how nor want to put in the effort of hooking up the steering for Pole Position...

Use a round over bit with a radius of 1/2 of your mdf size and ride the bearing on the middle of the MDF.

After I've done one side will the bearing have a large enough place to ride?

Should have the original height in the center if you adjust your roundover bit right.   You may need to try on a few scraps to get the hang of it.  You can use a smaller radius and just touch it to each side until it looks good to you.   You don't need to get a bit with half the radius unless you want to rout a true half circle as your edge.   Actually a smaller bit is probably easier to work with as you just touch each edge and it leaves the center of the mdf.

Controls- 4-way restricted joystick (which makes Bosconian a bit harder but not at all unplayable), one "fire" button, a menu button (which pauses the game and gives a "quit game?" option), and the on-off power toggle switch.

It does save high scores. I think it is basically a combo of your model and the Super Pac stick that came out a bit later. I at one point was going to use the newest 12-in-1, but like you, was not sure about the pole position controls, and the emulation of Xevious was no good.

I could see (if I made a decent bartop/mini with this one) doing a partner Ms. Pac cab with the other one you mentioned, I know some folks have just wired the original stick to a little wheel for pole position, and used a new stick for other games. http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=36591.0

Thanks BobA.  I'll just give it a go on some scrap and see what I can come up with.

Thefearsomefearful, sounds perfect for a future replacement since it has the same controls pretty much.  The one I have has a "reset" button rather than a menu button.  When you push it the screen goes purple and it boots back into the main menu like you just powered on.  Having a pause feature would certainly be a plus too not to mention accidentally hitting the "reset" button on mine is an instant quit which is no good.  I'll have to take a look around for one.

By the way, I've been using an 8-Way on mine and everything seems to play fine.  Bosconian certainly is a lot easier to play.

If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I was trying to find some solder points to connect the plug n play to the screen and I came across this web page:

I'm posting it here for my future reference and for anyone else who might want this information in the future.
