Multi System Menu In MaLa (Tree help ?)
« on: March 27, 2011, 10:38:55 am »
I've read and read and read some more, but I'm just drawing a blank.
I'm trying to set up my system to run multiple console emulators from MaLa.
The system will be housed in an arcade cabinet so everything has to be done via arcade controls (no mouse clicks).

I easily want to switch between consoles. Can this not be done the same way you go through lists, IE simply moving the joystick left/right.

I have done my custom MaLa MAME layout that includes snaps, when I right click and select another emulator the list shows up using the same background and fonts. (which is perfect, and what I want.) However no snaps are showing.

I'm thinking I need to use the MaLa tree but for the life of me can not figure this out.
I've read the wiki page several times over. Also on the wiki page you see the image with the jukebox, the galaga cabinet, and the N64, I would not want to use these as I want mine to be fully custom.

Any help would be great. When I get this done I will make the complete layout available for download.

EDIT : If you see here I have custom screens for individual systems should they be required. http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=109853.40

Well Not in Tree Mode. In that you go up and down the branches.

Sounds like normal mode would be more appropriate for you.

So that would allow me to simply scroll through each indiviual console on my system and its respect lists ?
For what it's worth the system has MAME, NES, SNES, and multiple Sega Systems.
Each of the consoles (including MAME) have the complete ROM set, then a set of gun games as the cabinet
is a dual light gun cabinet. I want the user to easily scroll through everything.
Also I'd like the graphic to remain the same regardless of console. Should it need to be changed I would
only add the system logo.

Does a tutorial exist Loadman on how to set this up ?
I really am lost, I had 0 luck. I had to walk away
and try again, but still had no luck. It just didnt
sink in.

Ok so I've made SOME progress.
I've got each console displaying its new custom menu.
(It's my standard menu with the console specific logo)
SNAPS are not working for all of the layouts, could this be because I have custom ROM sets and perhaps the names (snap name + ROM name) are not a %100 match ?
However I still need to right click to switch between emulators.
How do I fix this, I still for the life of me cant figure it out...... :hissy:
Thanks

Enable logging in debug mode (in options credits tab) then look at the mala.exe.log file. It will tell you what file name it is looking for.

See Attached Screenshot for possible solution :

I did indeed goto the Wiki, and did a TON of reading.
For the life of me I could not find an aswer.
I think I had logged way too much time on the PC.
I had to walk away.
Anyway thanks for posting, that did indeed resolve my issue.
Using LEFT/RIGHT I can now switch between emulators, however it skips lists.
Can that be fixed ?

Thanks Loadman !
Got it to work !
Only thing is as mentioned I can skip emulators, but it wont cycle my lists.
For now I used the enter key to do that (as my cabinet will have an enter key)
I'm happy with how it works.
Here is a short video.

Looks good but it will cycle through your lists if you allocate the change list keys as well (on  the same option screen)  ;D

That is how it was designed to work, as you may have many game lists  :P

Sorry Loadman,

I didn't mean to imply it was broken........my bad!
I've just assigned the ENTER key as a means to cycle through the lists.
The intention is to have all ROMs per emulator available, however the cabinet itself will not be able to play them as it is strictly a light gun cabinet.
However the buyer (as I plan on selling) can obviously make his/her own tweaks.
I'm going to compile a list of gun games per emulator based of the master list I found on Wikipedia.
I compiled the MAME list with ROMlister.

The SNAP issue I solved, was a naming issue. I'm going to look into FUZZY RENAME.

Cool.

Nice work  ;D

I hope you don't include in the cost of MaLa in your sales....as it's free (but donations always welcome for my Beer fund)

No I don't charge for MaLa.
This cabinet (Virtua Cop 2) is too large to fit into my house.
So it has taken on the role of project cabinet.
I think it is going to be very cool. But I'm sure like most people I want this running @ %100 prior to the sale. And I should add I'm going to use this all summer !
And if I dont feel like selling it will live in the garage, I'll need to pull out the LCD however...lol

What does "Disable when using tree mean?"
