WG 25k5191 Problems (I think it's a U5000)
« on: March 05, 2011, 08:49:54 pm »
When it comes to monitors I'm pretty much a complete noob. However for my mame project I picked up an old Blitz cabinet that has this monitor in it. I have an ArcadeVGA and really want to be able to run this in 640x480 and when I first tried it, it worked perfectly. Without knowing what I did though I messed it up. Now whenever I try to run it in 640x480 the best I can come up with when I messed with the dials is this:

This is what it looks like on my computer monitor:

Here are pictures of the 2 boards:

There's also a separate part that controls the Vhold, Hhold, width and position and other stuff.

Not sure if anyone knows how to fix this or if I can fix this, but it did work before, so there should be some way to get it to. Mainly because my Xbox has the same problem when it is hooked up and the lowest it can go is 640x480.

Well, that is definitely NOT a U5000 chassis.
Looks like an aftermarket Wei-Ya.

Did you or Windows happen to install any other video drivers ?
(I see ATI catalyst in the taskbar is why I asked)

I looked that up and it does look like that type of board... but it says Wells Gardner on the back of the monitor.

I'm going to try uninstalling and reinstalling all of the drivers and I'll post what happens (although I think I remember trying this before).

The monitor may have originally been a WG, but somebody replaced the boards.

This is almost definitely a driver issue, though.  It's probably outputting 31kHz progressive VGA.  I'd suggest talking to Andy.

Okay, one more question... What would I need to do to get it to work with my Xbox 360? The same bar goes down the screen on my Xbox as it does on my computer.

This is my biggest concern, because if there is no way of getting this to work with it, then I'll most likely be replacing the monitor.

You would need to make your XB360 output 480i RGB.  This is probably possible, but I don't know how to set it up that way.  It may only be doable on the European model.

This monitor is only capable of 15kHz scanrate aka standard res.  This means you can display 640x480 only if it's interlaced (which is the "i" in "480i").

Okay so after researching for a good couple of hours I've decided I don't want to get a new monitor. I really don't want to spend $400 on one and have to go through the pains and labor of putting it in my machine.

But I still want to get my 360 to work with my machine and I know it's possible, I'm just confused on how. Every thread or website/tutorial I find seems to be full of already experts on the material at hand. Can anyone describe what I'd need to do in a... dumbed down version? lol

I'm not positive of the right sequence since I don't fart with a 360 much....but go into System Settings---->Display and see what options for resolution you have and look for the 480i MonMotha mentioned. I think the options might depend on what cable you are using too. (like HDMI versus Composite or whatever go for the low resolution options)
Of course you will still need to hack a cable or find an adapter to physically connect the R G B and Ground up to the monitor or JPAC or whatever.

Really I have no idea.... I'm just babbling.  :lol

EDIT: Maybe this is the right menu sequence - http://www.ehow.com/how_5984230_do-change-resolution-xbox_.html

Well I was using a VGA cable, and the VGA can't do interlaced, so technically the lowest it could go was 480p...

The cable will do whatever the video source asks it to do.  Now, the Xbox, on the other hand, may have arbitrary limitations as to what resolution it'll pump out that connector...

Well that's what I meant, the Xbox does not allow the VGA cable to do anything interlaced... not sure why.

Well, then you're not going to be displaying your Xbox on that monitor using that cable.  You may look into a component (YPbPr) to RGB adapter.  The quality should be nearly indistinguishable from direct RGB if the conversion is done properly, and the Xbox will probably output 480i (aka SDTV) via that interface.
