Point Blank 2 build
« on: November 18, 2018, 01:17:13 am »
Came across a gutted Dynamo HS5 a while back and decided to mimic Well Fed Game's PS1 Point Blank as its my favorite shooter and I've been needing another project to help me procrastinate on, well, other more well-followed projects that have been dormant for quite some time.

Shoehorned a 27" CRT into it and got it all up and running. Down to a few minor things and working the art now. Guns were dyed just like WFG did his. I sliced up the cables and routed them through some wire mesh hose to get a better feel and also loaded them up with steel weights. Maybe someday in the future I'll buy shells with recoil and get that working, but for now, it's just the guncons.

Point Blank art is a ---smurfette--- to find so I'm rolling my own. It's not as jazzy as a fresh-off-the-boat Gunbalina cabinet, but I think it is on the way. Need to gin up the bezel instruction card and I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the CP.

Didn't take a lot of pics during the build. Pretty much just slapped a PS1 into a cabinet and filled some holes in a CP. Not exactly BYOAC rocket surgery. Still, it was nice to do something game related after a bit of a sabbatical from this hobby.

Pics

This here is the cabinet. The marquee in now is just a temp I threw together and printed on the work plotter (shhhhh, don't tell)

Left-handed through the phone and still kicking ass (not really, I totally killed all the civilians when I wasn't busy missing)

Working version of conversion sideart

I'm not 100% sold on the yellow-green gradient. I'm trying to mix PB and PB2 design elements a bit and I'm not sure I've landed it the way I want to. Fun to tool around with tho. Feedback welcome. I'm not going to the printer anytime soon.

I'm thinking yellow t-molding. Something purposefully gaudy.

I arted some art.

I wasn't digging the green anymore, went with white. Think it will pop more. Thoughts?

Need to go in and clean this one up a bit still. The balls under Dr. Dan and Don won't be floating in space, they rest on the lip of the CP, the nearly two inches below the balls is hidden deadspace.

White tmolding would really tie it all together.

I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Huge fan! I had a PS1 with all the shooters for a while. The problem I had was switching the guns out for the different games. I passed on a bad ass crisis zone machine that would've made a sweet shooting cabinet a while back

I really like what you did here. I may have to do the same thing. Got a minute for a few questions?

How is the bootup sequence? Like, how do you turn on the console?
Any issues with calibration or losing calibration? My old console and guns seemed to drift fairly frequently.
You can control everything from the guns, right? How do you think guests would do navigating it?
Any thoughts on the guncons vs some of the knockoff guns?

PS1 uses a maintained switch so I power everything from a single switch.PS1 doesn’t have a shutdown sequence so leaving it on and powering it from a strip isn’t an issue.  Point Blank makes you run a calibration screen every time you power on. It’s all run from the guns and user friendly. That said, I plan to power it up before guests arrive so it’s play ready.

The guncons are crazy accurate and don’t drift. They aren’t expensive and are plentiful online so no reason not to use them. They are the best. Guncon ones all the way. If you want to switch games or use a PS2 a guncon 2 is okay. Guncon 3 is an led gun. I’ve read pros and cons about 3rd party guns but non claim the accuracy of the guncon, food for thought.
