First cab:CHERRYCADE -Finished!
« on: February 02, 2011, 12:00:45 pm »
Hi to all byoac members!
This is my first arcade cab build, based on Lokesen's wonderful weecade.

Almost finished painting, thought i should post some pics as an incentive to actually finish the thing!
Any feedback will be greatly received.

Two pics above are ideas for cp and marquee.
Here are some build pics.  Nothing spectacular, kept very much to the weecade design, except want to have six button layout, like Kyoke's fabulous R-Type cab

Thank you very much! Its gonna have my old pc which is a P4 3ghz, 2gb ram, 512mb graphics card. This was my 2nd pc and still runs really well.
I scored a great 17" screen for free from my dads work.  It was deemed 'dead', but after a little poking around it just had a loose DC socket, which is now wired to the pc psu.

Looks great.  Do you need to paint the bottom part of marquee piece?  I'm assuming that will be showing and you don't want it to be white.  What kind of paint did you use/how did you apply it?

Yeah I'm going to unscrew that and paint it black, the back panel will also be black i think.

I'm using 'Plasikote' brand spray paint, although i have seen some nice rad car spray paint i might pick up tommorow. wet sanding between coats.

Nice choice of color. Nice to see colors other than black (even though I used black).

Keep up the good work
looking forward to see the completion

Woke up nice and early today with a spring in my step, ready to get my spray on!

Decided to paint speaker board red too!

4 coats later this is how its looking.  Sorry if some pics are a bit bright, lousy lighting in my kitchen, and with the flash it just vanished!

Very nice colour, and great choice on the cab design. Lok's weecade is great inspiration, don't say it ain't spectacular! ;)
I really like that cherry red, what paint and colour-code are you using?

Thanks!  Yeah that weecade design is fab, leaves room to put your own stamp on with some imagination.

Well as for paint.

After a couple of coats of grey primer,   I started with 'Plasti-kote' gloss red, then switched to Halfords Audi Laser Red Spray, which is a colour match car paint.

Have used 3 cans of spray so far (1 gloss red, 2 laser) wet sanding with fine paper between coats, will probably use one more can before a clear protective coat or two.
It has a lovely smooth feel to it.

I like your project as well, but I can't get excited about the colour. To me, an arcade should stand out. Be bright and eye-catching...
The colour you've chosen is something I'd choose for my walls (and have. my dining room walls)...something that sits in the background, not a video-game machine.

Bit more progress made, and some hick-ups.

Bad news:  The monitor that i scored for free, and thought was fixable really has died, teach me for being cocky!

Got my fall back monitor which is fine, the other one had built-in speakers that's all.

A little re-design inside, small amp for speakers, and its actually better i think.

Started on the back panel and cp.  Its plywood too, and will have plexi over it,  though i may go for a metal one if I'm not happy with it.

Bit of an update.

Done pretty much all the spray painting I'm gonna do for now. This sucker's got  4 cans of red on, and just finished the clear top coat

Spraying indoors really isn't an option, and the elements seem to be conspiring against me. Check out my comedy wind/rain breaker I slapped together!

Got my plexi and cp/marquee art coming in the post (hopefully next few days)

Did a quick paint job with masking tape to get a rough idea how cp will look.

I was planning on using some old Happ joysticks and buttons i had from very early control panel/box builds. (which will never posted here!)

However, I have recently discovered the heavenly joys that are Sanwa, so am ordering some more sticks and buttons this week

The 2 JFL balltops and buttons are from another project I'm working on, and just used them for testing, however I really like the look and think the colours work.

Any thoughts?

Love your work. Did you make the Cab wider cause you went with 6 buttons instead of the standard 4 on weecade? how wide is your cab total?

No the dimensions are the same as the four button layout, just crammed in a bit more.

Thank you Thank you.

Had a bit of a set back with the paint job.

Basically giant cracks appeared over night! I'm thinking it was due to continual bad weather whenever i painted, rained on several times, and moving the thing inside and outside so much.

I tried filling the cracks and touching up but just looked lumpy.

I was on the verge of taking a sledge hammer to it!!

Soooo - after a chill-pill or two I ended up sanding the whole thing down to the wood and starting over.

Its actually looking very nice now, and will post some pics later today hopefully. :)

I love these bartops

About the paint, gloss is tough to pull off on large surfaces.

If you're sanding down anyway, you might want to grab a few cans of that spray body putty. It's like a super thick primer. Sand, spray it on, let dry, sand, repeat, and get progressively down to 600 or 800 grit sandpaper and you can get an awesome finish, even with plywood, or mdf..

Check OND's Astro project for details.

Is this spray body putty a two part stuff that you have to mix together and then spray on with a gun?

Spray putty. Yeah absolutely.

I did use one small can of the stuff the first time round (lets refer to that time as "pre-crack") and it was great, very smooth.

I picked that up on ebay as my local Halfords store didn't sell spray putty.

However this time round (post-crack) realized that they do.  Its just called 'High build primer' and is exactly the same thing.

IG-88, Its a just a one part regular type of spray in a can, just seems to be a bit thicker than regular primer.  But there may well be a high end two-part type that they use in pro auto shops?
