We have a winner !
This will be configured in MaLa tonight.
I should have it done shortly.
You'll get the layout, PSD, load screen, and fonts used !

As promised free custom load screen....................hop you like !

*** Good idea is to also use this as your desktop Wallpaper, so for the brief few moments it takes for MaLa to load users will see this. Then in MaLa itself you select this image to display before a game is loaded ! Really helps complete the look ! ***

I should add for anyone interested, these layouts (skins if you will) for MaLa will not effect any of the default MaLa features.
So you can configure MaLa to work any way you'd like.
For example with any layout pressing PLAYER 2 START will still bring up a menu, as will SPACE and L-ALT.

EDIT - Couldn't help myself, a few minor tweaks to load screen.

- added ice cube
- drew in motion lines
- added shadow to main pengo character
- modified the font for more depth

Hey all,

I'm working on compiling some sound effects that I fell best work in the MaLa layout menu.
I've searched various sources online for video-game related effects and have compiled two sets of effects to be used within the MaLa menu.
I still need to convert these to WAV, but what I've done is name them in the order they would be placed into MaLa.
I have them self contained in a folder "SOUND EFFECTS" and personally I keep that folder in my "LAYOUTS" folder.
When this is done I'll make these available to anyone who has purchased a layout in the past.
Really easy to get these set up and configured in MaLa and I think it will give a new depth to the menus.

You'll see also that I place the sound effects in my LAYOUTS folder for easy locating, and you'll see that I've named them to match the placement.

I think (and don't quote me on this, I need to play around more) that you can add layout specific sound effects. But I also think you can add a set of sound effects that will be used by MaLa in anylout. As I said I want to mess around with this, either way tonight I'll convert my files to WAV and make them available.

Once I update the thread people who purchased layouts off me can email me for the ZIP file.

I've done this for my two Nintendo cabinets in my personal collection, my DK JR and my Mario both have sound effects in the menu.

I also suggest EVERYONE use the "arcade ambience project" which is awesome.

All your layouts look great. Good job.

If you don't mind me adding my 2¢ (that's about all it's worth), I personally would like to see more "general" Mala skins created for users.
While a Donkey Kong Jr, Q-Bert, or Galaxian interface is nice, it doesn't represent the vast collection many of us have. I personally don't like having a Mala skin with a single game theme but rather prefer cool arcade looking graphics that represent an entire collection or the concept of an entire collection. Just my opinion of course.

Have you have much interest in that type of interface re-design?

Personally I use a modified Retro GUI (by Nexus 6) on my cabinet. Having Photoshop and Illustrator skills I'm able to tweak it to my liking.
Works great for me and represents all the arcade emulators I'm running. See attached screenshot for an example of a recent menu screen design I made for Visual Pinball. Each emulator (MAME, M2, Supermodel 3, Demul, Daphne, Future Pinball, Visual Pinball, PC Arcade Ports) has their own menu screen on my cabinet.

Never thought of making any general layouts really.
Always enjoyed working with select art and creating themed layouts.
When that took off (or took off as best it could) my clientele base have been people looking to add a "completed" look to a select project.
PACMAN the clear most popular design I've done, as well as various other classics often requested.

I myself like the idea of a nice "non specific" design, however it never actually crossed my mind.
Busy as I am as of late I haven't had time to create many (any) layouts for general use.

To be quite honest, and I won't put the individual on blast, a recent issue with a "customer" has me leaning towards creating no more layouts.
However for customers I do wish to complete the audio element mentioned above.

I'm glad you like it.
I'm looking forward to seeing the complete project, cabinet build, everything.
If only we could sort out why the load screens don't work.
Sadly on my build PC I only have MAME installed, no ROM files, no nothing.
Just photoshop which I use to create the layouts. I import them into MaLa make sure
they work and display OK. But I don't have the ability to switch emulators.

I was about to hang it up based on one bad experience, however I think I'll keep on doing this.

Another vouch for Mike from me. I'm a tweaker, so I'm making some final tweaks to the fonts & such but the layout looks good and Mike's rates are very reasonable, IMO.

Great site for fonts, can get some awesome free fonts.
I pick fonts I think work, but it's always good to make tweaks.

I pride myself on the work I do, and I can say the almost every time (with the exception of once) my customers love the layouts they get.
I'd like to think I provide quality work, fair pricing, and a fast service with good customer support. My service doesn't just stop once I send the layout.
I thank you guys who have purchased layouts for the support and positive reviews. I love seeing the completed projects.
I had an issue recentley, and I wont name names, where someone said the item delivered was not as promised.
Now when I do a layout I always ask the same things, resolution, orientation, and theme.
Even if the past when issues have come up, somebody provides wrong resultion,etc, I try to make it right.
That was the situation this time, I was provided the wrong resolution and as always did my design to fit. When I was told the issue I offered several options, explained to the customer how to change the PC resultion (which is the easy fix) and telling the customer if needed I would re-do the layout.
I think that in this situation it did not matter what I suggested, the customer was not happy. I respect that. This resulted in a PayPal dispute and the funds were removed from my account.
I provided PayPal with the detailed email exchange which showed clearly the customer did indeed get the files (even sending the completed project to PayPal). Not only that, the emails showed the customer was at one point happy with the purchase.
I'm happy to report that PayPal sided with myself on this issue.
I'm sorry for venting here guys, I just wanted to make it known.

I appreciate all the business that gets sent my way, I love doing these layouts.
This set back had me wanting to stop, but I'm glad I kept doing it.
I'll work hard to provide you guys good stuff so long as you guys want it.
I will complete the sound effects project for all (sorry, BUSY!...got a baby on the way !)
and I'll post some samples for review.

Lastly to the customer who does indeed have an issue I STILL OFFER TO MAKE IT RIGHT!
Just email me and I can resolve the issue no hard feelings.

I've had some PC issues (crash/file loss) since posting some of these layouts, so older stuff I don't have anymore.
However when I do create layouts if the layout requires lots of tweaking I do sometimes end up with several variants.
Sometimes I include these as additional background images for the layout, they don't however come as extra configured layouts.

If someone wanted a Galaxian layout it would be start to finish a complete new layout.
It can however be built to look like (not exact) the Galaxian featured.

Just finished a nice multicade layout for a customer.

I took on another awesome project, "The Arcade Hack."
It was a three layout set up with custom graphics and logos inspired by "Bubble Bobble" "Sonic the Hedgehog" & "Mario Bros."
These layouts turned out awesome , and I included a custom default snap image and load screen.

Did a few other things that I think you guys will like, even a custom marquee, yes.........I can do more than just layouts.
