maintaining your web site with a mac?

I'm housesitting my friends place. He has a mac, and I think that's what I'll get next. So for the weekend I'm doing some homework, and practical exercises. What I've installed so far is ClassicFTP. What I'm used to is windows explorer FTP, which I like because it just mimics the look of the local folder. Nice and simple cut and paste. All I need.

So I've set up this ClassicFTP. At the moment, I'm looking at my local folder. And the remote folder says "/" which I would guess is root. I can get it so I can see folders in the remote folder. However, in windows ftp, I can see ALL objects- jpgs, .html etc. Is there something I should do to see everything?  That is my first question.

Secondly, how do I edit web pages with a mac? In windows and Linux, I can do a quick and dirty edit by opening with notepad. With mac, if I open with 'text edit' it shows the graphics too, and promptly screws up the layout. Does this mean a quick and dirty edit is out of the question? I'm not too fussed if that's the case. I normally use Nvu in Windows. Doesn't look like it's been kept up to date. Is it safe to use on a mac? Where from? Or is iweb ok? In which case, can I edit script in iweb, or is it GUI only? Oh hang on, I just found iweb on my friends mac. Does look limiting. I don't want to play with it though because it's asking me questions, and I don't want to screw up his computer  ;D

Ok, so second question is: Will nvu be ok, which I'm used to? Or if something else, what would you recommend, and can I just open my old webpage in whatever it is you recommend without screwing it up?

I have to say, so far so good. I've never really understood how to open up my remote pages in Linux, so I've had to boot into xp to do update my sites. The mac is one step ahead of Linux for me so far  :D

Try Cyberduck for FTP and add Smultron as external editor. Great combination. Just double click the files in Cyberduck and hit save directly in Smultron to store the modifications online.
About the invisible files: I think the problem is that you are in the wrong folder. Most hosting services don't put the root online as website, but the sub-folder httpdocs.
On Windows, notepad is VERY DIRTY. At least upgrade to Notepad++ on Windows!

Cool. I won't try any more things on my friends mac, but i'll refer back to here when I finally make the leap. You are probably right about me being in the wrong folder. XP on my pc is dead now, so I can't jump into that to see how the format goes. Ah ha. Worked it out If my website is http://dannygalaga.com, then I look at /dannygalaga  . Cool  8)

Try Ubuntu instead...  or Kubuntu, if you want the "mac" look...

I have been using Ubuntu for maybe two years now. While its been good. Its a bit 'techy' for me. And that's about the easiest Linux version around apparently! Stretched the life of my computer though, which Im grateful for (",)
