100 Greatest Games of All Time

gaijinking:

The list isn't that bad, but I don't agree with the ranking of games, and there are a few oddball choices.
But I think the original poster had a good idea, if we might expand it.  There's roughly 27 days left till the new year. How about we all vote on our own list of the TOP 50 games of BYOAC (arcade and console titles from Pong in 1972 to year 2000). We can pick or poll and agree on 2 games a day until the first of the year. And then spend every week of 2011 playing them (52 weeks in the year). For each game on the list we can hold challenges each week for high scores, or who finishes each game first. Share tips and tricks, and revisit each game together as a group? I find myself reading most posts here everyday like many of you do, so it might also be fun to also participate in a year long BYOAC event.  Is anyone interested?  :dunno

Donkbaca:

I think the way you develop the list is this:  break it down by genre's.  No b.s. criteria like "this should be on the list because it was the first game that did x"  I don't care it it was the first game to do it if it wasn't fun to play.  The keys are, is it fun to play now?  Would you play it over and over again?  Would someone you recommend the game to, who has never played it before say, "thanks! That was cool" or say, "that game blows, how can you say that was fun"  I think the way you do it is do top 10 by console/arcade and then consolidate that into top 20 per genre.  5 genre's - platformer, sports, rpg, shmup, and other.  There you go, top 100 most fun games to play.

Epyx:

Missing several games that were critical in the development of their respective genres:

Ultima IV -> First non kill foozle type CRPG
Ultima Underworld/System Shock -> This is where the list died for me...First true 3D rpgs...for shame
Rogue -> The game that started CRPGs absent? No Nethack? Cmon...

Many more absent games...so many the list loses all credibility with me.

DirtyDachshunds:

This topic wasn't intended to rate the credibility of the list, although I had a feeling this would happen.

I just wanted an excuse to play some classics from my past, try some new games I've never even heard of, and post some opinions.  All of us have games we think deserve to be on the list.  And each of us have named different games.  That shows how subjective a list like this is.

There will never be a 100 best games of all time everyone agrees with just as there will never be a 100 greatest foods of all time everyone will agree with.

Vigo:

Yeah. Threads often take a life of their own, but there is still quite a bit a cool input in here. I would love to hear your thoughts on the games you played as you originally suggested. I also like the idea that gaijinking brought up. If you (or someone else) is willing to make this into a "classic game of the week" sorta thing, where others can play as well and talk about the game, compete on a friendly level, etc. It would really open up some cool dialog where every

I also think we could probably come up with own or top 100 or top 50 to play as suggested, but I'm sure we will all be disagreeing with ourselves on that as well. donbaca has a good idea on how a list can be clearly be made by having a "best of" on 5 different genres. My only problem is that tons of cool innovative games may not be a clear fit in any one of those 5 genres. Also, if we do make our own list, it will probably have to be crippled so the games can be easily playable by most people here. You can't throw Tony Hawk 16: The Uphill Jamz on the list and expect others to be able to play it.
