Hi,  I recently purchased a Donkey Kong jr cabinet ( http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=107302.0 )

It is a 2 board PCB with a Sanyo 20EZ Monitor and has a problem with the monitor picture. It is squished horizontally, is faded/glowy, has a slight 'flag wave' at the bottom of the screen and has faded lines down it. It also appears to have 'fold over' on the sides.

What I have tried to adjust so far:

  • All of the monitor controls - V-Size, Brightness, V-hold, H-Center
  • I tried to adjust the Horizontal Width Coil and stupidly used an allen key, which had no affect on the picture, but also appears to not have caused any further problem. Possibly broken width coil?
  • Also hit the Degauss button for good measure, which had no affect

I saw this page which looks similar to my picture as far as the width and the fold over http://arcadenation.blogspot.com/2009/01/unfolding.html

From seeing that I am hopeful a Cap Kit will fix the problem. Heck, I should do a Cap kit anyway on a machine this old right?! I was thinking the Deluxe kit from Bob Roberts.

What I would love to know from you experts is have you seen this problem before? And if so, what wisdom can you share for fixing it?  I would LOVE to get this screen back to its original quality!

Without further ado, here are some pictures of the problem and also my monitor for reference.

Thanks so much!!

That monitor needs a cap kit. It has all the classic symptoms.

Thanks Ken!  I shall order a deluxe cap kit.

Should I go ahead and replace anything else while i'm doing that? I would like to get as much fixed as possible while I have the monitor discharged and out of the cabinet.

Caps are all it will need. Make sure you get the cap kit that includes caps for the sound amplifier board on the monitor too.

Update!

I installed the deluxe cap kit from Bob Roberts and I think the following pictures speak for themselves ...

Before

After

There was a very slight 'flag wave/ripple' afterwards but it appears to have disappeared after being turned on for an hour or so. I will keep an eye on that...

The screen isnt as bright as I hoped. The smoked glass bezel makes kinda dim. Brightness is turned to max on the daughter board...

Anyway, great result I think!! I'm really glad it worked.

Give your screen control a nudge, that should bring up the brightness.
Man, will my cab EVER be finished?

Is that the 2nd pot on the flyback? Next to the focus pot

I tried that earlier and it made the colors washed out. I'll try again with a more delicate turn and see if it helps.
