I'm testing the new one and works perfect here, only tested from live-cd, will probably install this eventually to get a better knowlegde of it. I'm using OSS all the time as ALSA never worked for me (not tested lately), but I remember seeing those ALSA errors VeS has when loading Mame even with OSS selected and fully working. Maybe VeS board only works with OSS as mine? Tomorrow I'll test the network stuff to see if I can put some roms there.

Hi Calamity, are you saying that you can use the last 2 live versions without problems? I've tried to disable the sound card of the plate and put a sound blaster 128 but there is no way, tomorrow I'll try with 5.1.
Anyway the mounting procedures have you successfully loaded advmenu alone, without having to type in xterm?
That sound card and motherboard have?.

Bitetibe mingetty've tried to use instead of gdm or xdm etc. .. to do single user login and so charged the X from the bashrc? this could save you problems?

Greetings.

Saludos.

Yes, these last versions work here flawlessly, but I only use OSS and always run from the live-cd. The audio card is an integrated one, motherboard is an Asrock, will give you the details.

Okay, so oss and alsa not integrate well with my sound card, either because the driver missing or did not correctly identified.
You could try installing to see if you think the same thing to me, you do not load automatically advmenu.

I tested the GDM boot option tonight and yes I see the problem now.  I will fix that, does look like if fixed, it will boot into advmenu nicely.  At least I see it on the build I made, but still should work fine if you don't choose GDM login on install (will go to the setup menu still, but won't start only an xterm that way).  Are you seeing a login when booting, graphical one, and then an xterm and some other odd apps?

Hi bi, when I boot I have not log in, start automatically, but only loads xterm.
What most worries me is the issue of alsa and oss, you could see something like that? you may be missing the kernel module? or detection fails?

Yeah I have a much better way to login automatically now, like you used, I'm going to use mingetty and setup a test and it worked well.  I could in theory reboot after exit from advmenu too now.  Instead for now I launch gasetup with sudo as root, but that can be changed in the new /home/arcade/.bash_login very easily

Basically:

/etc/inittab: (change)
c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty1 linux

to

c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --autologin arcade --noclear tty1

and create a new file /home/arcade/.bash_profile:
#!/bin/bash
export PATH=/usr/games/bin:$PATH
startx
sudo gasetup # could change this to sudo /sbin/poweroff to halt system

So that seems to work here, oh and also run this...

/etc/init.d/xdm stop

and/or

rc-setup del xdm default

I'm not sure why the audio isn't working there, you did have OSS4 audio though before didn't you?  Possibly not touching any of the audio settings on install, see if it works that way.  It may be your setting up Alsa or OSS4 (you don't have to setup OSS4 at all unless you already setup Alsa and rebooted).

Thanks,
Chris

You're right, my problem is not related to your software, i will try to give as much informations as i can to Alex.

I've posted a thread on a french forum about your software, seems that you will see more froggies around near  ::)

Something interesting, I have seen the same half screen issue finally.  Well I have a Radeon 5450 CEDAR model card I just got and am testing it.  Well it does the exact same thing in the console, and it's because it won't support interlace. A 320x240 console works and fits but of course the menu system doesn't fit on that at all.  So I suspect it's the same issue in both cards.

Also it's interesting, since these cards don't work at all in Windows with Soft15khz.  They seem to even have probed modelines in Linux too that my methods for the default ones and framebuffer stuff doesn't get rid of.  So that's annoying of them, but besides that it does do 15khz modes so it isn't a dotclock limitation or anything.  Yet it seems they don't have the interrupt/vblank support yet so they don't do vsync and page flipping at all.  I'm sure it's just not been implemented yet by Alex, the ATI developer.  So at least I can recreate your issue, but I also suspect it may be either interlacing problems with both cards, else maybe they can't do interlacing.  I am digging into where these probed modes come from, so I can change the kernel to ignore them on a CGA 15khz output.

Nope, it's weird because it's a 15khz display but half the screen is cut off for it at 640x480, yet with 320x240 progression it's perfect.  Also the 15khz modeline setting is perfect in X Windows for games, but they run 400+ percent speed of course because the vblank interrupt isn't working right.  Then you've got the probed modes all there just in the way, although mostly just are going to hit the 320x240 games and such.  So it seems these newer Radeon cards technically can do it, we just have to ignore these probed modes and possibly can't do interlace on them, or it's not implemented yet like the vblank isn't.  It is really new, Alex just got CEDAR chips working at all as of last November.

Hello bitbytebit, unless you want to get out of X by mistake, you can include this option in the bashrc

Code: [Select]
while true
do
startx
done

As I can reinstall alsa without having to install the kernel?

Thank

Try this ISO LiveCD32-Full-1.400-44b3297.iso

This new version should boot straight into advmenu as the arcade user after install, I removed gdm completely.  Also a improved the way the menu of gasetup does the startup/quit and info messages.  Also I went back to the stripped down version for now, with just what we need for emulation, so not having to upload/download extra.

Do you know about the portage system, how to run emerge?  I have Alsa work when I run the install it option in the menu, so I'm guessing either your sound card isn't compatible or it's for some reason not finding it for the mixer unmute or similar.

What does `aplay -l` show?
what does `ossinfo` show?

Hi, I have the solution for apgar the pc from the user advmenu arcade.

Code: [Select]
groupadd shutdown
Code: [Select]
add arcade to the group shutdown
check this created the user group and has arcade
Code: [Select]
shutdown:x:1002:arcade...
now with the command visudo, add the following lines

Code: [Select]
%shutdown ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /sbin/reboot
%shutdown ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /sbin/halt
%shutdown ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /sbin/shutdown

And finally create the alias .bashrc

Code: [Select]
alias shutdown = ' sudo shutdown -h now'
alias shutdown = ' sudo halt '
alias halt = ' sudo halt'
alias halt = ' sudo shutdown -h now'

This all tested from the console, since I have done with a virtual machine, so I need to check that advmenu off the pc.

Thank

Hello, here are the results of alsa and oss, I think as you say the sound is no problem, but the ArcadeVGA, refuses to acknowledge (actualizastes the kernel, right?) and therefore does not load the game, it is possible right? because I've tried other vga ati pci express in other pc's and if the games work.
I could not find the file or radeon.o radeon.ko, only a ati-agp.ko may be missing that module? which is actually charging for the AVGA?

By the way does not create the file bashrc bashr_profile nor with the start command, because you put it in path in bash? should not only recognize all routes?

On the subject of the pc off, advmenu not let you use the command says you need to be root, but if you put the command works fine, no error if this latest version or not, because when I think the aka I always put the leaves alone are eliminated.

Thank

The radeon and drm are built into this kernel, they are not modules, that's how they load the 15khz frame buffer right after grub.

Which ArcadeVGA card version are you using?  In theory it should work, unless it's an AVGA 3000, those need to be flashed into a normal Radeon card in Linux for DRM/KMS and interrupts/vblank to work.

Do you have logs of /var/log/Xorg.0.log when it doesn't work?

The audio looks like it should work, everything is configured right for Alsa and OSS it seems.

the .bash_profile is used in /home/arcade/ , the autologin ignores .bashrc and that isn't really executed.

Hello AVGA I use is 9250, with the kernel version 2.6.38-rc2+ ,but with the new rc +3 no way it will work, the X function but loading mame not think that's why the error was radeon .....
Code: [Select]
penGL: PBO not supported
mame: radeon_cs_gem.c:181: cs_gem_write_reloc: Assertion `boi->space_accounted' failed.
Aborted

The bash_profile not believe it has to be done manually.

You could put the old kernel to install it myself, and so that it works or not?

The bash_profile not believe it has to be done manually.

You could put the old kernel to install it myself, and so that it works or not?

Can you get the dmesg log, and also Xorg.0.log for it?  Those logs would be useful to see what is going on.

You can probably take the old installation and use the kernel from there, the /boot/ /lib/modules/ directories,
see if that alone fixes it.

Ok, I'll try and take the logs to

Also output of glxinfo

Also run glxgears and have it go full screen, see if the same thing happens there.

mame: radeon_cs_gem.c:181: cs_gem_write_reloc: Assertion `boi->space_accounted' failed.

The mame error that you see, it seems to have to do with mesa and opengl somehow.  When did that error start exactly, it's odd because there have not been any changes to opengl recently and the old kernel doesn't fix it either so that's not the issue then.  Isn't Calamity using the same card too, it seemed to work on his, so definitely strange.  All the logs look good, like things *should* work, but somehow it's hitting that issue and it's an old issue it seems...

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/656100

So doesn't seem like it should be happening anymore, or if it had it should have always been doing that.

Also the audio warnings are easy to get rid of with 'audiodriver dsp', it's choosing that after trying alsa basically but it is cleaner to add that to the mame.ini.  I probably will add that.

Hello bitbytebit tests with LiveCD32-Full-1.368-33e345e.iso

Grub still fails, you can make a solution a bit sloppy as to create initrd vmlinuz symlinks in /

I think you should warn for newbies to choose the home directory is to put it on a partition other than the installation because it can not be installed, as well as data.

Here I have my doubts if you choose a partition to install the live and another to take home, which creates data?
Do not think it is best to default data within the home? Sorry for insisting on this, but I think it would be as easy for any newbies.

For xterm loads. xinitrc? If you hide the mouse, remove gdm etc. .. is to make it look as possible to the system, no? to me it has worked well without putting advmenu xterm.

After installation, the boot does not directly load X, it waits console login.
What application do you use to autologin? mingetty ...?

I tried mame and mess, but I can not always run the libraries fail with Alsa, but alsa or oss configure the installation, always the same error of libraries alsa, and I can not run any game.
I do not think that imaging can be corrupt, and I set advmenu to sound a mp3 while you're on the list of games working well, so it can be a bad compilation, right?

Another thing that would be interesting is that the arcade user can use the shutdown command to turn off the machine from a key or key combination, I was wearing with 2 +5 key in msdos, but in linux I have not been able to do not function to run shutdown from regular user.

Thank you and Goodnight today.

I think it was from here, no update Xorg? then there is no solution for AVGA 9250? I can do?

I'm testing the webmin thing right now and it is absolutely amazing how easy it's everything now. Still exploring it and finding out stuff. I've managed to put some roms thanks to the network folders now available as /home and /roms (shouldn't be any for snaps?) and finally been able to play 'normal' roms on this system, it's really awesome.

I'm having an issue however when trying to mount my ntfs partition, I'm doing it like this:

It actually gets mounted and I'm able to browse the file system with the file manager provided in webmin. So that drive is mounted as /calamity and I can see it also in lxde, but when I try to get into it it says "permission denied". Then I'm trying to use it to point its rom directory as /calamity/Roms/Mame, either in advmenu.rc and mame.ini, but AdvMenu complains something like "no Mame game found to match the filter selected" so it seems it can't use that folder for the same reason. Do you have any clue why this could happen?

Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

It sounds like a permissions issue, I am thinking possibly the unix permissions it's getting are disallowing you from reading it.  check the 'ls -altr' output, see what the permissions are, try to access it after doing 'sudo -s' with ls and see what it does then.  It can only do read only for ntfs, so can't change or hurt anything, might have to do some trick with root access I guess to be able to utilize them (or become root, and copy them over, at least to test).

Yes, I could get in there from the xterm by doing sudo -s and then cd /calamity, so it seems permision related. Problem is I can't invoke Switchres (doesn't find Mame) or AdvMenu from there...

Hello AVGA I use is 9250, with the kernel version 2.6.38-rc2+ ,but with the new rc +3 no way it will work, the X function but loading mame not think that's why the error was radeon .....
Code: [Select]
penGL: PBO not supported
mame: radeon_cs_gem.c:181: cs_gem_write_reloc: Assertion `boi->space_accounted' failed.
Aborted

The bash_profile not believe it has to be done manually.

You could put the old kernel to install it myself, and so that it works or not?

I am pretty sure I can fix this bug, I found that it seems the version of Mesa 7.9 we are using needs to be upgraded to 7.9.1 and that is where the fix is for your radeon card with the r200 chip in it.

I should have this fixed in the next ISO image, you can run this on an install and test this fix right now...

autounmask media-libs/mesa-7.9.1
emerge -av mesa

That should update your Mesa, and fix it hopefully.

Thanks,
Chris

Right, you won't want to run mame or switchres as root like that, but check the 'ls -altr' output of the files/directories under there and let me see that part (send me a msg w/it attached).  We'll have to look into what people normally do with NTFS file systems, although I *think* the way would be by specifying a user as the files permissions at the mount command line.  That's what you have to do with windows shares and NFS shares sometimes.

Ahha, you probably just have to specify in that menu setup in webmin the user as arcade and group arcade, maybe even let users mount the drive too.

Here it goes...

BTW previously in Windows I had changed the properties of the drive to share all of it.

Yeah, I updated the last post, I think you'll just need to say it's owned by the arcade user in those options in the webmin setup for the drive, and maybe set it so users can mount it too.

Hi, I have the solution for apgar the pc from the user advmenu arcade.

Code: [Select]
groupadd shutdown
Code: [Select]
add arcade to the group shutdown
check this created the user group and has arcade
Code: [Select]
shutdown:x:1002:arcade...
now with the command visudo, add the following lines

Code: [Select]
%shutdown ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /sbin/reboot
%shutdown ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /sbin/halt
%shutdown ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /sbin/shutdown

And finally create the alias .bashrc

Code: [Select]
alias shutdown = ' sudo shutdown -h now'
alias shutdown = ' sudo halt '
alias halt = ' sudo halt'
alias halt = ' sudo shutdown -h now'

This all tested from the console, since I have done with a virtual machine, so I need to check that advmenu off the pc.

Thank

Actually just doing this..

alias poweroff='sudo halt'

At the top of /home/arcade/.bash_profile

Should allow advmenu to halt the machine and shutdown basically.  The arcade user already can run sudo without a password and advmame calls poweroff to shutdown the machine :).

Or actually just this in .xinitrc...

#
#
export PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/games/bin:$PATH
alias poweroff='sudo halt'
xhost +
xsetroot -cursor .emptycursor .emptycursor
advmenu

Test that and see if it works

Update: Actually you'll probably have to do this, it probably is the only way:

rm /sbin/poweroff
touch /sbin/poweroff
chmod 755 /sbin/poweroff
echo '#!/bin/bash' > /sbin/poweroff
echo "sudo halt" >> /sbin/poweroff

poweroff is normally a symlink to /sbin/halt, that is what advmenu calls.  The aliases won't work because advmenu calls the full path to poweroff as /sbin/poweroff and an alias can't have a path.

That was it! It's working! I can access all my games and snaps from AdvMenu now.

Hello, I do not feel the eyes and I'm a little crazy  :'(

It works well, and you can configure a key or key combination to turn off the machine.
Quote
rm /sbin/poweroff
touch /sbin/poweroff
chmod 755 /sbin/poweroff
echo '#!/bin/bash' > /sbin/poweroff
echo "sudo halt" >> /sbin/poweroff

And now the most important, I think some had taken me as a bit   :banghead: But I have to say I am ..........

Quote
autounmask media-libs/mesa-7.9.1
emerge -av mesa

But now if you suck and everything is working properly
Thank you very much, now you can get a final version, to new updates.

So if I have 2 days I will not stop testing versions and versions  :banghead: :banghead:, and you made me no error case OpneGL  ;)

Sounds good, yeah I am building ISO's right now, looks like there's a lot of good fixes including mame 0141u1 fixed discrete audio too so mario and asteroids galaxian sounds work right again.  I guess they posted the fix a few hours after the release, so that is really cool since the mario issue was a bummer, now everything is working correctly with mario and even sounds nicer than in the past I think.

Also there's a fix for the console not interlacing for the 5450 radeon boards, or probably all the newer ones basically, I think it might do vblanking actually (need to test it more).  So we may just have support for newer Radeon cards now too in the 5xxx series.

Also that patch, I'm not sure, but it may fix that rs690 issue, will have to see with the next ISO and test it for me.  If not it's close, I haven't been able to test the patch with my 5450 yet but I get the feeling it's good there.  It at least could help Alex see how to fix the rs690, I'm guessing it's a similar issue in that part of the driver.
