Mortal Kombat II Cmos Invalid
« on: September 29, 2010, 03:13:34 pm »
I received this error and after having read the boards, I changed the battery and this did nothing.  I changed it to run off the dipswitch coinage, no change.  I ran the diagnostics tests and everything checked out okay with no errors.
When I turn the game on, I get one tone, it starts checking the roms, completes that successfully and then I get a split second of game sound and then it switches to the 'errors detected' 'using dipswitch coinage' 'factory settings restored'.
As I said, all the tests came up okay including the sound.  Anyone have any idea on the problem? Thanks.

If you have it set to run rom dip it wont throw the CMOS error code, you sure oyu have the dips right?

I switched to run on dipswitch coinage, so I don't get the CMOS error, I get the dipswitch error instead.  This is how I ruled out a dead battery, even though I installed a new one.

'errors detected' 'using dipswitch coinage' 'factory settings restored'.

That error means it is still trying to use the CMOS (battery) memory settings.

So did you"physically" change the Switch #1 on Bank #2 or did you just do it in the onscreen menu?

I originally had the CMOS error, then I physically switched it on bank #2.  Now I get the dipswitch coinage error.  Then I ran all the diagnostic tests that came up clean.

I will take a pic, but I already did spend the $2.68 for a new battery.

Took the pic, here it is.  You were right, there is still a CMOS error.  It used to say 'using CMOS coinage'  Anyhow, the dipswitch was changed physically, I have tried a new battery.  The photo was taken an hour ago and there was no battery in it at all.  Should I not still be able to use it if I don't care about high scores?  Anyhow, if you press 'any key' as asked, there is a split second of sound and then the thing goes quiet while cycling through the MKII storyline.

all its gonna lose is the operator data (like how many times baraka was picked) and the win streaks, so long as you have the game using dip over CMOS it'll save settings like freeplay and difficulty. I'll see if I can duplicate the issue on my MKII board, I'll pull my CMOS battery and see what she does.

Thanks for the help. The original problem was the same error, just 'cmos coinage'.

ok so I pulled my CMOS battery and ran it from dip and it was fine. No warning on boot up. I think your CMOS "scratch ram" is bad. Which isnt a big deal unless win streaks and operator data means a lot to you. You say it goes quite for the story line, thats normal on my board, it'll only play the story music after a game over. Does your sound work when the games on, just curious

I only get sound when I turn it on.  I get the 'tone' and then it checks the roms.  Once done, right before the screen I posted with the picture, I get a split second of game sound and then silent.  I cannot play at all. Once the game story starts to cycle, pressing a button to play doesn't work.  All the sound worked properly in the diagnostics mode, other than that, silence.  What do I do for a 'scratch ram'?

Just for kicks.... measure the 5 volts from the power supply.
Sometimes if it is a tad low these boards will do weird things. (I've seen some that needed bumped to 5.3v or so)

I have no idea how to measure the 5 volt.  I am pretty green to this stuff.  What I do know is from reading these forums and the manual for the game.
