OK, time for something a little different.
Back in the day there was only 1 arcade within about half an hour. It had a strange collection of games, mostly mid-90's. The closest thing to a classic was probably Hyper Olympic (Track n Field) and it had a lot of late 80's games (Rygar, Rastan, After Burner etc). For $5 on a Friday night it was 2 hours of unlimited credits, disco music and a couple of slices of pizza. At the time it seemed unbelievable value though looking back with most games 40c a play it probably wasn't that great. Street Fighter 2, TMNT and some early Neo Geo MVS systems had just infiltrated and the queues for these were the longest. There was one game that me and my friend would play the most though. Champion Wrestler.
Most would probably not have played it, but it is a pretty good game even if you aren't in to wrestling. It actually has a really good tag-team mode for 2 player action (which a lot of modern day wrestling games still struggle with), but I thought I should stick with singles for this competition. Points are in the form of prizemoney awarded after each match.
It's maybe not a game that many people have played (would think of playing) but this is the game that made me want a machine in the first place. Sure I might have discovered some 'better' games since, but this one keeps a place on my favorites list for more than just nostalgia reasons.
I also still maintain this is the best arcade wrestling game ever made (yes, better than Superstars and Wrestlefest) and seeing as we haven't had many sports games (or any wrestling games) I thought now was a good time to throw it in.
At first it might seem like a bit of a button masher - and the game probably could be completed by a 10 year old with an electric toothbrush - but scoring points (dollars) requires some finese.
ROMSet: champwr, Champion Wrestler (World)
DEFAULT DIP Switch Settings
Singles Matches
Difficulty: Medium
Time: 3 minutes
'1 minute' lasts: 50 seconds
PLAY INSTRUCTIONS:
+ Press Button 1 for punch, Button 2 for kick, ->-> for run and both buttons for cover.
+ Move your stick and hit buttons as fast as you can to make power moves.
+ Each Wrestler have his own move. Try them all to find your favorite fighting style.
MY TIPS:
+ With a few games and a little practice this is a game that can be pretty easily completed. You will find that scoring points seems to rely mostly on dishing out punishment rather than finishing quickly though.
+ Some wrestlers seem to generate better scores than others. The game is probably easiest to complete with Decker but he doesn't seem to accumulate the points of other wrestlers.
+ You can get lucky with 'good runs' (ie facing the easier opponents last) so if it seems quite hard it might be that you are getting a little unlucky.

- One credit only.
- No continues!
- No MAME cheats!
- Last day is Monday September 20th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2010.
- High score (most dollars) wins.
- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.
- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!
- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.
- If you're a MARP competitor on this title (like there are any...), keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!
- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.
Good luck!
Please if you are a Twin Galaxies competitor and such there is already a place for you, so let this be a friendly competition amoung us mortals
Please make sure your sores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, ect.)
So lets get ready to wrestle...
I hope you all give a slightly different game a chance.

Interesting choice!
Never played it, but will give it a go
garwil:
I just had a quick go and quite like this game. The only thing is, how do you pin people? I managed to fluke it twice by button mashing but haven't been able to do it since! Is there a list of commands anywhere for this one?
wweumina:
There's a flyer around somewhere with some moves described that I'll try to track down.
To pin, hit both buttons when the other guy is down. Some moves/reversals also lead to a pin. Jimmy in particular has a lot of those moves.
wweumina:
OK, I'll try to translate.
Picture 1 from the top:
When in a grapple hitting a different direction and the kick button will do a different move.
When in a grapple you can also throw them into the ropes/cage with punch and the direction.
When the opponent is on the ground you will do a different move depending on whether you are near the head, legs or running.
When the opponent is on the ground hit both buttons to pin
When pinning/being pinned/being grappled shake the heck out of the joystick and smash the buttons to do the move/get out of the move/pin.
In a tag match hit punch to tag in.
Picture 2:
Run by tapping twice fast in a direction.
Climb the ropes by holding diagonally toward the ropes.
Use a weapon by hitting punch
When on the ropes do a different move depending on whether you hit punch, kick or both and whether the opponent is up or down.
That's all I've got from memory/reading the flyer.
