OK, time for something a little different.

Back in the day there was only 1 arcade within about half an hour.  It had a strange collection of games, mostly mid-90's.  The closest thing to a classic was probably Hyper Olympic (Track n Field) and it had a lot of late 80's games (Rygar, Rastan, After Burner etc).  For $5 on a Friday night it was 2 hours of unlimited credits, disco music and a couple of slices of pizza.  At the time it seemed unbelievable value though looking back with most games 40c a play it probably wasn't that great.  Street Fighter 2, TMNT and some early Neo Geo MVS systems had just infiltrated and the queues for these were the longest.  There was one game that me and my friend would play the most though.  Champion Wrestler.

Most would probably not have played it, but it is a pretty good game even if you aren't in to wrestling.  It actually has a really good tag-team mode for 2 player action (which a lot of modern day wrestling games still struggle with), but I thought I should stick with singles for this competition.  Points are in the form of prizemoney awarded after each match.

It's maybe not a game that many people have played (would think of playing) but this is the game that made me want a machine in the first place.  Sure I might have discovered some 'better' games since, but this one keeps a place on my favorites list for more than just nostalgia reasons.

I also still maintain this is the best arcade wrestling game ever made (yes, better than Superstars and Wrestlefest) and seeing as we haven't had many sports games (or any wrestling games) I thought now was a good time to throw it in.

At first it might seem like a bit of a button masher - and the game probably could be completed by a 10 year old with an electric toothbrush - but scoring points (dollars) requires some finese.

ROMSet: champwr, Champion Wrestler (World)

DEFAULT DIP Switch Settings

Singles Matches

Difficulty: Medium

Time: 3 minutes

'1 minute' lasts: 50 seconds

PLAY INSTRUCTIONS:

+ Press Button 1 for punch, Button 2 for kick, ->-> for run and both buttons for cover.
+ Move your stick and hit buttons as fast as you can to make power moves.
+ Each Wrestler have his own move. Try them all to find your favorite fighting style.

MY TIPS:

+ With a few games and a little practice this is a game that can be pretty easily completed.  You will find that scoring points seems to rely mostly on dishing out punishment rather than finishing quickly though.
+ Some wrestlers seem to generate better scores than others.  The game is probably easiest to complete with Decker but he doesn't seem to accumulate the points of other wrestlers.
+ You can get lucky with 'good runs' (ie facing the easier opponents last) so if it seems quite hard it might be that you are getting a little unlucky.

----------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only.

- No continues!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Monday September 20th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2010.

- High score (most dollars) wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title (like there are any...), keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

Good luck!

Please if you are a Twin Galaxies competitor and such there is already a place for you, so let this be a friendly competition amoung us mortals
Please make sure your sores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, ect.)

So lets get ready to wrestle...

I hope you all give a slightly different game a chance.

I just had a quick go and quite like this game. The only thing is, how do you pin people? I managed to fluke it twice by button mashing but haven't been able to do it since! Is there a list of commands anywhere for this one?

There's a flyer around somewhere with some moves described that I'll try to track down.

To pin, hit both buttons when the other guy is down. Some moves/reversals also lead to a pin. Jimmy in particular has a lot of those moves.

OK, I'll try to translate.

Picture 1 from the top:
When in a grapple hitting a different direction and the kick button will do a different move.
When in a grapple you can also throw them into the ropes/cage with punch and the direction.

When the opponent is on the ground you will do a different move depending on whether you are near the head, legs or running.
When the opponent is on the ground hit both buttons to pin

When pinning/being pinned/being grappled shake the heck out of the joystick and smash the buttons to do the move/get out of the move/pin.

In a tag match hit punch to tag in.

Picture 2:

Run by tapping twice fast in a direction.
Climb the ropes by holding diagonally toward the ropes.

Use a weapon by hitting punch

When on the ropes do a different move depending on whether you hit punch, kick or both and whether the opponent is up or down.

That's all I've got from memory/reading the flyer.

I must say I enjoyed that a lot more than I thought I would.

$1,628,000 to get the comp started. Think I used Jimmy for this score if anyone's interested.

Ok, after learning my way around, I can now post a more respectable score. 2,043,600.

Using Rocky.

And 1 title defense after winning the belt.  Good luck!  It really helps if you get Samurai as the champion.  He seems to be the easiest to beat at the latter stages.

Glad to see a few guys giving it a go too.  I'm not going to compete given that my record was just over $16m.  That was on 'hard' difficulty though so I'm not sure if the cash accumulates quicker.

OK so I couldn't resist.  I thought I'd have a game to see if point progression was similar between 'medium' and 'hard' difficulties.  It seems it is very close.  The bit of paper I use to track the money between matches was always pretty close.  The final matches contribute most of the money.  Final score was $17,467,500 which I think is my best score (though I normally play on 'hard' so I don't consider this my best 'game').

Just to be clear, I'm not submitting this score.  I didn't pick the game so I could win, I just couldn't resist putting it up as I can't remember breaking $17m before.

Before any conspiracy theorists come out, the only reason I used player 2 was because my player 1 stick is currently a JLW in 4-way mode for Donkey Kong and I didn't want to get the screwdriver out and take the control panel off.  Player 2 is currently a U360 with octagonal restrictor.  I can tell you my forearms are sorer after using that stick with the hard spring as opposed to the Mag-Stik Plus I used to use for this game.

I used Cobra Bloody Joe for that one.

He seems to be one of the easiest to score points with.  I think Jimmy Carbon is more fun to play with though and Matterhorn Decker is the easiest to finish the game with.

I'm still working out the best way to score points, but cheating seems to help (choking, biting, using a cane or chair etc).  That's one of the reasons Cobra scores points easily because you have the breathing fire option (both buttons together when opponent is standing up - I usually pull away as I do it to avoid accidental pin attempts).  He also has the ground choke (punch button near the legs of the opponent when he is on the ground) and a bite.

If you are in a close match, especially where the other guy is making a comeback, a quick way of scoring a pin can be to go to the top rope (careful that the other guy isn't too close because he can throw you off) and hit both buttons together.  For many of the characters this will do a splash which will sometimes work even if the other guy is standing up.

Another tip I just thought of:

The most dangerous opponents are Rastan and Nitoro (and Decker if you cop him after about the 5th match).  They have some high powered moves they can pull out of nowhere.  I normally just try to beat these guys rather than beat up on them.

The 2nd cage match.  A couple of things that might help.

- You can throw the other guy into the cage.  When in a grapple, tap the punch button and the direction you are trying to throw him.
- If you are being thrown into the cage, hit both buttons together to try to slow down.  You can often prevent yourself hitting the cage.

Why the hell can't I beat Nitoro?!?!
Doesn't matter what round I meet him in as soon as I'm on the ground he doesn't let me stand up.

wweumina, do you get extra cash for making your opponent give up as opposed to getting a pin?

Nitoro can be tough when he gets on a roll with his submission moves.  Try avoiding him by running around a lot and attacking him on the run.  Once you get him down, dish out the damamge.

I haven't noticed any difference in points from making them give up rather than pinning them.  It can also be pretty tough to get submissions in the later matches.

Alright finally beat the last match! phew!
Not a great score compared to wweumina but I did beat the game!!!!
I found that if you wear the guy's health down to nothing you can pin him pretty easily
and like wweumina says don't let the guy touch you on the later matches or your toast, and learning the charters specialty moves are key

Got a little worried after not getting any cash for winning the title fight (what's up with that?) but I got my 10mil+.

 :o Bloody hell!!!! :o
All 5 of those scores beat my 2nd best (about 8.8mil).

If this comp went for another couple of hours I think you would have had me. Well played Bender,  :applaud:

New comp thread will be going up as soon as I can decide on a game.
Never argue with an idiot, he'll just drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Well done guys.  Good to see you get through the game and I hope you enjoyed it!  I always thought it was a bit of sleeper title.  It did get a PC-Engine/Turbo Grafix 16 conversion and appeared in a Playstation compilation a while back so it has a bit of cred, but still not many people know of it.

Anyway, congats on a good close battle.  I'd like to see a one on one match to decide it.
