My first flight is next Saturday, I booked an extra 12 minutes (1/10 of an hr is how they charge!?!?!) to gain more time holding the controls & diving up down left right b a b a select start.

yeah, they normally charge by engine hours, which is in tenths of an hour. Unfortunately for me, learning at an international airport meant more holding on taxiways, longer taxiing and more holding in the circuits. that meant less actual time for touch and goes :( The more touch and goes you can squeeze into an hour, the faster you learn.

I learned basic instrument navigation (VOR and ILS) from a 20-year-old flight simulator.  I don't remember the name of it but I'd guess it was on the Amiga.  I think a more recent version of Microsoft's flight simulator can teach you way more than you'll need for a private license.  I'll bet user mods even keep the nav data up to date.

Yeah, that's what I was driving at. A home version flight sim would be excellent for nav exercises. Not much use for learning to fly though, because you don't feel anything.

I've wanted to be able to take flight lessons for awhile, but the cost is crazy! Luckily for me tho there is a small regional airfield nearby, so touch and goes would be easy to deal with (IE the runway isnt in heavy use). Also, I practically live in a national park... So the vistas would be nice.

Just for info, how much are they charging you guys? I wonder how diff it is in diff regions of the US and would like to see what the cost is in Oz...

Also, the Amiga flight sim wouldnt happen to have been FA 18 Flight Interceptor, would it have? (more of a flight recon/defence game but I played it alot)

It's been a while now. Ten years or so ago it was $135 an hour. I had another crack at it about 3 years ago, and I think it was about $185 an hour. This was achievable the first time around (ten or so years ago) because I was still living with my parents. Now I don't think I could do it. That's just me though, many people, including at least one of my flight instructors scrape and save even while they are bringing up a family to get get their licence. I'm just no that driven  ;D

Pinballwizard will be able to give you a better idea of price. Here's a couple of photos for inspiration.
