An idea for frontends
« on: August 05, 2003, 09:03:28 pm »
Dunno if this is possible and may be looked down upon by true arcade enthusist (those against putting consoles on a cabinet), but it would be neat to have an option within a frontend that when you start a game you have the option of using a controller versus the Control Panel. But I am just day-dreaming. I realize that their are many diff. emus for many diff. consoles so that might be impossible. Just a thought.

Are you talking about using a game controller for some emus and the joys for other emus?

Or are you talking about sometimes using the joysticks and sometimes using a control pad all within the same emu?

Either one is actually already possible.

I was talking about: hmmmm ok let's say you are used to playing nes on the CP however your annoying friend isn't and therefore wants to use a gamepad, is there a way where you can tell the FE to tell the emu that you want to use a gamepad instead of the CP (instead of manually using a mouse and selecting the option in an emulator)?
Does that make sense?

Why wouldn't you just setup the emu to use either control?

Btw this isn't possible for a fe as each emu has a different config file, some don't even have config files, and each one is in a different format and named differently.

Thank you for playing!  (copyright planetjay 1984)

Well I could setup both controls but then when I play a 2-player game and Im kicking ass the "annoying friend" can hit the CP to screw me up, oh well it was worth a shot thanks.

Yeah, define all the controls in mame (or use ctrlr files with mame).

How could he when he is player 2 and you are player 1?  His gamepad would be mapped to player 2's controls and thus he could only interfere with those buttons on the panel.  Since you are player 1 he can't mess you up.  :)

What's up with this paranoia about friends screwing you up?  They can do that anyway no matter what you do.

No doubt. Last night I was on a serious high-score breaking run in ESP Ra.De. and my wife was wanting me to go upstairs so we could... sleep. She was able to quickly disrupt my run, with a minimum of effort. And she didn't even need to use the P2 controls to do it!

Whenever you wanna beat a friend at a game just turn to him and smack him. Unless his name is something like Biff or Butch I guarantee he will let go of the controls to hold his nose.
